Chapter 832: Bulletproof
Chapter 832: Bulletproof
"Thanks to you, I met him. If not for you, I might not ever have known how to be valued, respected, and taken seriously. So, it’s still a happy ending."
Ivy remained silent as Dane studied her side profile. Talking about him only reflected bitterness and pain in her eyes. But the moment she thought of a certain person, gentleness and pride illuminated her gaze.
Another deep exhale slipped past his nostrils, turning away from her. He looked at the side road, deep in thought.
"How are you sure it’s a happy ending?" he broke the silence with a quiet voice. "He might die at any moment."
"Hah..." Ivy let out a short laugh, thinking about her next words to him. "That’s right. The man I love is surrounded by danger, threatening to take him away from me. But that’s why I am who I am, Ivy Wei."
The side of her lips curled up slightly, but confidently. "I’m not one to easily let go of something or someone I’m determined about. It might not be enough or not much, but I’ll do my best to keep him alive."
"Ivy Wei," Dane called, almost surprising her, as he had never addressed her with her full name. "You don’t know what you’re talking about."
"I know it might seem foolish, but I’m left with little choice. You should know better than anyone how stubborn I can be," she replied with a smile. "My stubbornness doesn’t yield to pain — to anything. I still have many things to tell him and things I want to do with him. Our time together isn’t still enough, so I will not let anyone take him away. Not when we weren’t tired of each other yet."
"You love him?"
"Yes." Her answer was quick and resolute. "I love him... and that is one of the reason I am like this. He hadn’t heard me say that to him and I hadn’t heard those words from him yet."
Another wave of silence befell their shoulders. He parted his lips, but no words came out. Instead, he pressed his lips together and nodded, looking away from her again.
"How nice," he muttered. "To have reasons."
Ivy raised her brows and snuck a peek at him, only to see him staring out the window. Again, his answer was quite vague for her. It confused her, but she didn’t feel the need to question it. It wasn’t worth mentioning.
With that, both of them thought that would be the end of their conversation. They expected a quiet ride as both of them seemed to have already spoken everything to each other. But after ten minutes of nothing but silence, Dane spoke.
"Where are we going?" he asked, almost making her jolt at his sudden inquiry.
"About that..." Ivy trailed off, forgetting the silly excuse she had come up with earlier. "I was just... going to... uhm..."
He blinked gently, his eyes fixed on her. "You didn’t plan on anything, did you?"
"No, it’s not like that," she denied strongly. "I just forgot about it because of our previous conversation — shopping! Yes, that’s right. I was thinking of shopping for what I should wear to the event I was invited to. Knowing you’re honest, I’m sure you’d give me honest feedback."
"Why me? Why didn’t ask your boyfriend?"
"Tiger isn’t my boyfriend... yet," she corrected humorously and nervously. "He’s also busy about something. Also, I look good in everything I wear in his eyes."
Ivy gulped as she bit her lips, sensing the doubt coming from Dane’s gaze. She took another shallow breath.
"Fine," she said. "I came here not because I needed your help. But rather, because I wanted to talk to Dom about something. But when I noticed your car with both of you inside, it seemed like something was off between you two. You two seemed you’re in the middle of an argument. Even though I’ve seen you banter in the past, I felt like there was something off earlier."
She paused and smacked her lips. "That’s why I butt in." What she said was true, although it was only a part of the truth. She came because the last location Tiger was in was in Dane’s hometown. It was the very reason she rushed in here to see Dominic.
"I see." Dane nodded in understanding, snapping his eyes back to the window. As he did so, his gaze veered to the side mirror. He squinted, noticing the motorcycle behind them aiming its lights toward their car.
"Miss Wei," he called, earning a hum from her in response. "Is this car bulletproof?"
"Huh?" Ivy instinctively looked at him. "Uh... yes. Why are you asking?"
Just as the question rolled out of her tongue, Ivy set her eyes ahead. She then caught three motorcycles behind her through the rear mirror. They were beaming their lights on her, making her squint a little. For some reason, she heard the motorcycle revved up before they picked up their pace.
Her heart pounded as alarm bells rang in her head. The motorcycles accelerated; one veered to the right lane, while the other two flanked the left. Ivy instinctively stomped on the pedal, picking up her pace as well. However, the motorcycle seemed to be much faster as they caught up.
"No matter what..." Dane spoke calmly, turning his attention to Ivy. "Keep driving, Ivy Wei."
"Huh?"
In no time, the three motorcycles were driving on either side of her. She barely caught sight of their passenger before a barrage of continuous shots was fired.
"Kyah!" Ivy jolted in surprise, eyes shut, screaming her lungs out. Even so, she kept her hands on the steering wheel with her foot on the gas pedal.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
"Keep driving!" Dane yelled, forcing her to open her eyes.
Much to her dismay, Dane was oddly calmer than she thought. Feeling helpless and outnumbered, Ivy realized there was no one else in the car to aid them.
"Didn’t you say it’s bulletproof?" he grabbed her arm and tugged it mildly. "Keep driving!"
"Uh..." With shaking eyes, Ivy refocused on the road ahead. Her heart was racing, and she was almost hyperventilating. "This is bulletproof. This is bulletproof."
Knowing the vehicle was safe, Ivy found a little calmness in her heart. She narrowed her eyes, recollecting her thoughts and telling herself to continue driving. However, just as she thought she deluded herself, one of the motorcycles drove past her until it was driving ahead of her.
"Oh, god." Her voice shook as she watched the passenger of the motorcycle twist his upper body to look at their windshield. She saw the passenger take out a rifle, making her breath hitch.
These guys would kill them.
