Chapter 831: Not as satisfactory as she thought
[To: Dominic Zhu
I think you owe me one. I don’t know the reason yet why you owe me, but I’ll be fine.]
Ivy took a deep breath, locking her phone immediately after sending the message. Simultaneously, she turned her head to the front passenger seat as Dane got in.
"Seatbelt," she remarked, smiling at Dane as he gazed at her.
Without a word, Dane fastened his seatbelt, leaning back comfortably, his eyes fixed on the windshield.
"Where are we going?" he asked, sensing her gaze from the corner of his eyes.
"Just... somewhere," she said, peeling her gaze from him. "You’ll find out once we get there."
Dane slid his eyes to her, only to see her starting the engine. There were lingering questions in his head, wondering why this woman was here and what she wanted from him. However, he dismissed them all.
’It’s one of her nonsense again,’ he thought as the car started to move.
As they left the border, Dane turned his head to the window. A car drove past them, honking as if in greeting.
"Do you miss him?" Ivy’s attempt to humor him compelled him to turn to her. "You’re always with Dom. So, in a way, I feel bad for ambushing you and abducting you."
"You came at the right time."
"Hmm?"
Dane shook his head, looking away, keeping his attention on the side road. Meanwhile, Ivy glanced at him and then back to the path ahead.
"I take that as a compliment," she joked, her eyes still on the road. "Back then, you always looked like you hated seeing me. So, I take that as a compliment."
The side of her lips curled up. "Those days... Who would have thought there’s an end to it?"
A moment of silence filled the vehicle as they dwelled on their past.
"Right?" After a prolonged silence, Dane whispered. "Who would have thought there’s an end to it?"
"What’s with the tone?" she teased, chuckling. "Don’t tell me you’re regretting it now?"
Again, Dane took some time to speak. "You’re Ivy Wei," he said quietly. "You’re someone who never gives up something you set your eyes on."
"Is that what you thought? That I’ll keep begging you for attention? And love?"
"Yes." Dane glanced at the driver’s seat.
Ivy gripped the steering wheel as her smile cracked. "What?"
"During the anniversary event, I thought it was one of those confessions you’ve made in the past. It wasn’t the first time you told me you’d stop," he explained, eyes on the window, his tone nonchalant. "I already lost count of how many times you said you’re tired and fed up. You will stop for a while, and then you’ll come back more determined."
"So, I thought it was one of those moments again." An inscrutable smile turned up on his face. "Who would have thought you were dead serious that time?"
"Mr. Zhang." Ivy forced a smile, a little irked at what he had said.
"It’s the truth, Miss Wei," Dane replied indifferently. "That’s what I thought. If I had known..."
"If you had known I was serious at that time, then what?" she interjected. Her attention was still on the road, but her voice broke slightly. "Would you... have a different answer that night?"
Silence descended in the vehicle, making their previous remarks weigh heavily. Neither looked at the other, but they both focused on the conversation.
"No." After what seemed to be forever, Dane spoke. "My answer would be the same."
"If so, then why say all of that?"
"I don’t know." Dane sighed faintly. "I haven’t figured that out yet, Miss Wei. That is why I went to your place that night, to find out if I made a mistake or not."
"What did you find out?"
Dane slowly turned his head, setting his eyes on her side profile. "It was a shame," he confessed. "That I didn’t meet you earlier... Or perhaps, a little later in life."
Deep lines appeared between her brows as she took the opportunity to cast him a quick look. His answer was vague, confusing her instead of clarifying things.
"Why are you always like this, Mr. Zhang?" she sighed, shaking her head as she refocused her eyes on the road. "At this point, I can confidently say you’re a pro. A real player."
Her eyes softened. "This is why I couldn’t let you go back then, even if it hurts. After hurting me to a degree you would never imagine, you’d kiss the same part you hurt."
"Are you a sadist?" she snickered with a touch of sarcasm. "Because that’s the only explanation I can think of that would make sense."
Dane stared at her side profile quietly, catching the mixture of ridicule and pain in her eyes. He gulped, hearing it echo in his ear. Pressing his lips into a thin line, he looked away with a heavy heart.
’This is why I couldn’t let you in,’ he told himself. ’Because if I do, you wouldn’t just enter through the door but go all the way in.’
"Goodness." Ivy chuckled lightly. "Thinking back, I thought that once I moved on and saw your regret for letting me go, it would be satisfying."
She shook her head, taking a deep breath which she huffed sharply. "I was wrong," she added. "Instead of satisfaction, it was... upsetting. Or rather, it was insulting in a way. My feelings had always been real. I was ready to slow down and be someone you’d like. I did things I didn’t like for you, and now, you’re telling me you never thought of me seriously?"
"I thought you had already said all the hurtful words, but I guess I underestimated you." The bitterness on her face gradually disappeared as her expression softened. "Though it was a little demeaning in a way, I’m still glad you never accepted me because of whatever reason you have."
Her eyes softened with affection as she thought of a certain person. "Thanks to you, I met him. If not for you, I might not ever have known how to be valued, respected, and taken seriously. So, it’s still a happy ending."
