Chapter 830: Clutch
Chapter 830: Clutch
"My answer is probably the same reason why you’re putting up with me."
Dane lowered his head as he slowly balled his hand into a fist. His breathing started to slow down, hearing his own gulp echo in his ear. Everything Dominic had just uttered kept repeating in his mind. Eventually, Dane turned his head to the backseat door. Lips pressed tightly, Dane wordlessly walked around the vehicle and entered the driver’s seat.
"Mr. Zhang." Dominic arched a brow, squinting his eyes at Dane in the driver’s seat. "What are you doing in there?"
Dane huffed and slowly gazed up at the rearview mirror. He didn’t say anything, just studied Dominic’s expression through it.
"Since I told you I don’t trust you anymore... are you going to kill me?" Dominic inquired calmly. "How? Crashing this car so it can look like an accident? Wouldn’t you put yourself in danger in that case too?"
"Why?" Dane breathed out, hands on the steering wheel. "Why do you doubt me?"
"I’ve already given you the answer, Mr. Zhang," Dominic blinked. "Do I have to repeat them again for you to understand?"
"Sir—"
"Dane Zhang." This time, Dominic’s voice was colder and his eyes were sharper. "I was hopeful, and even now, I am. Did you decide you’d completely disappoint me today?"
"Sir, what you’re saying is... nonsense. I would never—"
"Why did you choose me?" Dominic interjected, narrowing his eyes while Dane’s pupils slowly dilated. Another deep exhale slipped past Dominic’s nostrils, looking away from the driver’s seat to the window beside him.
"As I mentioned, trust is a constant for me. It wasn’t about the big things that build that up or destroy it, but the small things," he continued after a momentary silence. "In this case, the small details are the cause of that collapse. I think I started having questions around the time Andrea Ng got into the household."
Dominic paused once more, recalling everything from the past. "Everyone around me would always go through you. But because I trusted you, I rarely double-checked. At least, I didn’t bother. But one thing led to another and now here we are. Funny, isn’t it?"
Silence reigned in the car for several seconds. Dane gripped the steering wheel even tighter, eyes on the backseat. Meanwhile, Dominic dropped his hand to his side, reaching for a gun tucked in it. Both men stared at each other in silence, holding their breaths and waiting for what would come next.
As the silence grew more deafening and profound, a sudden knock on the window broke it. Both men blinked and gasped at the sudden noise, turning their heads to the window in the driver’s seat. Deep lines appeared between their brows, watching a woman bend down to reveal who she was.
"Hey!" Ivy knocked on the driver’s seat once again, smiling. "Mr. Zhang! Open the door!"
"Miss Wei?" Dane wound down the window, puzzled. "Miss Wei, what are you doing here?"
Ivy smiled and rested her arms on the window. "Are you leaving now? Just when I arrived?"
"Uh..."
"Oh, Dom!" she tilted her head, waving at Dominic in the backseat. "I told you I’d come. How come the event has already ended?"
"Do you know how long it’s been since the call ended?" Dominic smiled, retrieving his hand from the side of his seat. "What are you doing here?"
"Don’t bother coming out to greet me." Ivy waved, only to hear Dominic’s savage denial. "Hah. I didn’t come for you."
She pouted, averting her gaze back to Dane in the driver’s seat. "Mr. Zhang, do you still have work after this?"
"Huh?" Dane furrowed his brows. "Why are you asking, Miss Wei?"
"Just answer."
"No. He doesn’t." Dominic answered from the backseat. "After this, I’m going home. Then he’ll go home."
"Great!" Ivy clapped. "Mr. Zhang, can you help me with something?"
Dane’s already furrowed brows deepened even more while Ivy’s lips stretched wider.
"That’s alright with you, right? Mister Zhu?" Ivy peeked in to see Dominic.
"The answer is not up to me, Miss Wei." Dominic slowly set his eyes on the driver’s seat. "It’s Mister Zhang’s call."
"I see." Ivy nodded and looked back at Dane. "Mister Zhang, can you help me with something?"

"Where’s Mister Zhang?" Bear asked as soon as he got into the driver’s seat. He glanced at the rearview mirror, only to see Dominic staring out the window.
"Ivy took him with her." Dominic’s reply was short and simple. "What took you so long, Mister Cruel?"
"Mister Zhang asked me to run an errand."
"He did?" Dominic slowly looked in the rearview mirror. "Not briefing with the team?"
"Is that what he told you?"
"Mhm." Dominic took a deep breath as he leaned back. "I took a risk today, Bear. If not for Ivy, you probably wouldn’t have arrived with this car still here. Or the car would’ve been here with a dead person in it."
"Did he—?"
Dominic shook his head, interrupting whatever question Bear was about to ask. "Unfortunately, he denied everything from start to finish."
"So, do you think he’s telling the truth?" Bear asked. "He’s been bothering me since that time he asked that question."
"He denied it, but his actions say otherwise. Luckily, Ivy arrived."
"Dom, if Miss Wei took him with her, aren’t you worried he’d do something back to her?"
This time, Dominic didn’t answer. He looked away from Bear, fishing his phone out as it vibrated.
[From: Miss Wei
I think you owe me one. I don’t know the reason yet why you owe me, but I’ll be fine.]
"Whoever Dane was..." Dominic trailed off after reading Ivy’s short, yet reassuring, message. "What I’m certain is that he wouldn’t hurt Ivy."
"Why?" Bear inquired almost immediately. "Because she used to like him?"
"Because he had no reason to hurt her." A smile turned up on Dominic’s face, holding Bear’s gaze steadily. "Moreover, after years of working with him, I knew not everything was fake. A part of him played a huge part in his role; I think you know that more than anyone, Mr. Cruel."
He nodded slightly and looked away. "Let’s go... to that place again before I come home."
