Chapter 823: Moral dilemma

"Just give it a try and show us your magic. You can do it."

A word of encouragement from your boss was always slightly motivating and moving. But this time, it wasn’t. If anything, all Primo felt at his boss’s remarks was dismay. To be fair, Primo simply chose to be a lawyer because he heard the pay was good. He could’ve chosen anything else, but for him, this was the easiest. Or perhaps, the fact that he hoped people would get justice he didn’t have as a child played a huge part in it.

The reality was different, though.

When he graduated, got his license, and was accepted into one of the best law firms in the country — thanks to being a top-notcher on the licensure exam — Primo realized reality was always the same: disappointing. He had witnessed some guilty people get away from their crimes just because they had money for lawyers. Although there were satisfying and moral cases, the bad in them were equally mixed.

Primo just had to learn to look away or stay away from these sorts of things for the safety of his morals. He should’ve known that being a senior associate would force him to take such complicated cases that would challenge his morals. He should’ve known it was not all rainbows and butterflies.

Days later...

"So, Mister John..." Primo cleared his throat as he gazed at the man across from him in his office. "I’ve read through the case. Since I’ll be handling your case, you should know that transparency is a must between us. I need to know the truth — every detail, no matter how small or big it was."

Sincerity swirled in his eyes while staring at the pair of emotionless eyes before him. "In this way, I can fight for you correctly."

"Okay." His client’s response was short. "What do you want to know?"

A brief moment of silence befell the two of them with Primo expecting a lot more reaction from this man. However, Mister John was oddly cooperative. Clients with such problems like him would most likely deny everything or defend themselves, claiming their innocence. But Mister John was different. Primo already knew that upon meeting him for the first time.

"Your case... is a complicated one." Primo breathed out, leaning back and recollecting his composure. "So, we have to go through it again. I need to know —"

"I told myself if she’s the one, she won’t get in the bathroom."

The rest of Primo’s voice rolled back into his throat as he lifted his eyes to his client. His client was staring at him straight in the eye without any emotion.

"I said, if she doesn’t, then I’ll spare her," Mister John continued. "But then, she kept telling me she had to go to the bathroom. I told her repeatedly not to go, but she still did, regardless of my warning. So, when she went to the bathroom, I slowly pulled out the hammer hidden underneath the bed and followed her."

"The door was locked, so I had to wait for her outside. When she finished and opened the door, I pushed her back in and smashed her head in with the hammer." A slight smile appeared on his face as he recalled the crime he committed. "She didn’t fall unconscious on the first strike, so I struck her again. But then, she was still conscious and her screams were getting louder."

Primo held his breath as he listened to his client’s confession, assessing the latter’s expression as he recalled the crime. As Mister John detailed everything, a look of satisfaction and lust swirled in his heart that could make anyone who was seeing him and listening have goosebumps.

"Since she’s not dying, I went out to get some things." Mister John smacked his lips and huffed, leaning back comfortably. "I chopped off her toe and then her calves, her knees her quite thick, so I had to smash them with a hammer. From there, I started breaking her piece by piece. I didn’t even realize she stopped screaming."

"Mister John..." Primo opened and closed his mouth, rendered speechless by what he was hearing at the moment. Or rather, he was more disconcerted at the fact his client was narrating the crime with such bizarre emotion.

Primo had met wicked people in the past, but this one was probably the worst he had met.

"You asked for transparency, attorney. So, I’m being honest." Mister John leaned forward, resting his arms against the table, eyes fixed on Primo. "That woman isn’t the first and probably not the last. I don’t want her to be the last."

’This guy is crazy...’

"So, can you win the case?" Mister John tilted his head to the side, blinking innocently. "Can you tell me that that woman won’t be the last, Attorney?"

Primo and Mister John stared at each other in pure and tormenting silence. Primo couldn’t think of anything else after that exchange. It was as if he blanked out. He didn’t even know how and when Mister John left, but what Primo knew was that he couldn’t seem to get up from this chair until now.

"Can I win this case?" he muttered to himself, lowering his eyes at the legal papers in front of him. "I can... but I don’t think I want to."

Mister John’s case was a gruesome murder. All evidence pointed at him, and he was arrested, only to get bailed out because of his family’s connections. Even so, the court date was already set, and the victim’s family was dead set on making Mister John pay for it. After all, some body parts of the victim were still missing.

"A psychopath... on the road to becoming a serial killer," Primo whispered, eyes still on the legal documents before him. "Can I let this guy walk freely and victimize more people?"

Again, Primo’s determination to drop the case surged in his heart. However, he couldn’t easily do that when everyone around him was expecting him to win this case. Moreover, dropping a case wasn’t as simple as it sounded. Because his client came from a wealthy family, Primo was aware dropping the case would not only put his job at risk but would also affect everything, including his siblings.

So, despite his unwillingness, he had to swallow everything and turn away from his moral values for the sake of his siblings’ future.
