Chapter 824: Nice legs

Three weeks later...

Primo pressed the lock button of the car, making it ring two times. Holding his briefcase, he walked away from the vehicle to get to the office early.

"Attorney Cafre!"

On his way, he heard the familiar voice of a woman echoing in the underground parking space. Turning his head, he saw a woman in a pair of casual suits jogging toward him. Recognizing those fiery eyes and boyish aura, Primo stopped in his tracks.

"You’re seriously going to take the case?" Without any introduction, the woman interrogated him. "Why?"

"Prosecutor Mitchell, I don’t think it’s proper for the prosecutor of this case and my client’s defense lawyer to meet before the court meeting," Primo casually remarked. "I’m saying this for our sake. If you came here to interrogate me, then I’m disappointed in your lack of ethics."

"Lack of ethics?" Prosecutor Mitchell scoffed at the level of hypocrisy in the first minute of their conversation. "Alexander, don’t take this case."

"Why not?" Primo cocked his head to the side. "Are you afraid the prosecution will lose against me?"

"You’re a new senior associate, Alex. You don’t pose that much of a threat."

"You don’t believe that, do you?" Primo arched a brow, his eyes scanning the woman. "If you did, you wouldn’t be here telling me to drop the case and abandon my client."

"He is a psychopath, and behind bars is where he belongs," Prosecutor Mitchell argued, stressing each word through gritted teeth. "You know your client is crazy, and that poor young lady won’t be his last victim."

Primo blinked, unfazed by her sentiments. Meanwhile, she studied Primo’s expression, feeling utter disappointment at the look on his face.

"You will still represent him?" she asked in disbelief. "Why?"

"It’s work, and I accepted the case because I believe my client is innocent."

"Alex, he is—"

"It’s disappointing to hear that a prosecutor is already accusing someone even before it’s proven in court." Primo sighed and shook his head once. "Prosecutor Mitchell, for old times’ sake, I will not make a huge fuss about this ambush. But please be aware that if this happens again, I might press charges against the prosecution for trying to talk a defense lawyer into abandoning his client."

Primo took a step back and stared at the woman for a moment before turning around to leave. Prosecutor Mitchell looked at his retreating back while grinding her teeth.

"In the end, you still end up becoming like everyone else," she barked, making him stop in his tracks. "Alex, you know your client isn’t innocent. That guy at J Electronics, and your firm is protecting is a legit nutcase. How can you swallow the fact that you’re trying to help a person like that walk freely in this world?"

She balled her hands into tight fists until they shook. "What you are trying to do isn’t to prove someone innocent, but rather, you’re helping a criminal — a psychopath victimize more people in the future. How can you even sleep at night, knowing you’re fighting for the wrong side this time?"

"Mara is now a young lady. She’s only a few years younger than that woman he mercilessly butchered. I can’t believe you’re allowing a psycho like him to walk in this world where your sisters walk," she added airily. "May you not regret this decision, Alex."

Primo glanced over his shoulder but didn’t say anything. Instead, he looked ahead and resumed his steps in silence.

’It’s not like I have a choice,’ he said to himself. ’I have to get him out of this mess because if not, the price I have to pay is something I cannot afford.’

With that thought in mind, Primo didn’t stop his steps to work for the day. In the past two weeks, Primo had been working on this case and had met up with Mister John several times. What Prosecutor Mitchell said was true; Mister John was a legit nutcase. However, that piece of work had a powerful backer.

They had been pressuring Primo and even threatened him. His bosses weren’t doing anything aside from cheering him up to win the case. If there was anyone in this case who was more scared, that would be him. Thus, he couldn’t lose this case even if it was akin to selling his soul to the devil.

Primo could’ve fought for what was right. He could’ve done better, but during that time, he thought he had so much to lose. His life and his siblings’ were just experiencing a good life; he didn’t want to take that all away so abruptly. Moreover, he didn’t want those kids to worry about adult stuff anymore. His intentions were pure, even though his actions weren’t.

It took quite a while for Primo to realize that he had so much more to lose after winning the two-year-long legal battle.

Two years later...

"Thank you, Attorney Cafre. Thank you." An old man held Primo’s hand with both his hands as he expressed his gratitude. "At last, this thing is over."

Primo smiled in relief as he nodded, shifting his eyes to Mister John standing behind his grandfather. "I only did what I had to do, sir."

"Haha. If you need anything, don’t be afraid to tell me," said the old man. "I owe you big time."

"Haha." Primo chuckled as he nodded. "I’ll be shameless and keep that in mind."

"Of course!" The old man tapped Primo’s hand before releasing it. He glanced at another man around them, and the man immediately took out something from his suit. He handed it over to the chairman of J Electronics, which the man then gave to Primo.

"This is a private calling card," he said, nodding at Primo encouragingly. "Call me if you need anything."

Primo smiled and accepted the card with both his hands. "Thank you."

"If you decide to leave your firm, tell me. I’ll vacate the chief legal team position in our company for you. Just say the word." The old man chuckled while Primo replied in a humble remark.

The two of them exchanged pleasantries for a moment before parting ways. It took two years for Primo to win the case, but now, it was over. It felt like a shackle was removed from his wrists and ankles. With that thought in mind, Primo walked away from the courthouse with a big smile. But as he reached the lobby, he caught someone sitting in one of the seats.

"Huh?" Primo stopped, eyes falling on the young lady seated in the corner. "Mara?"

Mara, now eighteen, stood from her seat. She smiled radiantly, like a flower blooming gracefully amid this ever-chaotic world. Primo smiled back, only now realizing Mara had grown into a beautiful young lady clad in new clothes, even though there wasn’t a special occasion.

"Big Brother!" Mara called, skipping her steps toward her big brother. As she stood in front of him, her eyes squinted as her smile stretched. "Congratulations!"

"Mara, did you come here —"

"You’ve been working on one case for the past two years, so how can I miss the verdict?" she joked. "Anyway, I’m really happy and proud of my big brother."

Primo’s eyes softened even though he disagreed with the word ’proud’ and even though he didn’t feel any sort of satisfaction in the word ’congratulations.’ All he was feeling right now was relief that this case had come to an end.

"Thank you," he expressed, and Mara quickly jumped to his side, hooking her arm around his.

"Should I buy you something?" she asked, making him laugh.

"An ice cream, maybe?" he joked, walking away with his sister by his side.

What Primo didn’t know was that from the entrance he came from after he chatted with the family of his client, Mister John was there. His eyes were fixed on Mara, his gaze falling to the back of her knees as she was only wearing a skirt.

"What nice legs," he whispered, lifting his eyes to her back, and then the side of his lips curled up into a wicked and lustful smirk.
