Chapter 822: Show us your magic

The big case that propelled Primo to promotion was a complex matter that many lawyers had refused to take. Their law firm was the only one that accepted, given its reputation for being both risky and competitive. Despite being a junior associate, Primo volunteered to handle the case. Normally, his seniors wouldn’t have approved due to his lack of experience, but since he was the only one willing to take the risk, the client chose him. Fortunately, the client came from a well-off family with numerous connections, granting Primo the opportunity to showcase his legal prowess in that particular case.

He won the case against all odds. Subsequently, Primo not only earned a promotion but also became sought after for legal assistance, with many wanting him to join their legal teams.

This situation was not entirely new to him. What was new, however, was a partner of the firm coming down to his office to introduce him to a client. Normally, senior associates or individuals slightly higher in rank than Primo would handle such introductions. But now that Primo had been promoted, he had the freedom to choose cases that intrigued him.

"So, this is..." Going through the formalities, Primo sat down on the long couch across from the client while one of his bosses made the introduction for the two of them.

Primo assessed the man across from him, noting the fearlessness in the man’s eyes. The latter had tattoos on top of his knuckles, some peeking out of his long sleeves and neck. The client appeared relatively young, probably around the same age as Primo.

"Mr. John, this is our star lawyer at the moment, Attorney Cafre." The senior chuckled as he introduced the two, turning his attention to Primo. "Attorney Cafre, here’s the file for the case. Take some time to read through it and get a grasp of the situation."

Primo nodded, picking up the folder in front of him. As he took out the papers, deep lines appeared between his brows as he skimmed through the first page of the documents.

"This is..." he trailed off as his senior immediately spoke.

"It’s nonsense," the senior said, watching Primo look at him in disbelief. "Anyway, I just brought Mr. John in here to introduce the two of you. Review the file and prepare. If you need anything, just tell me."

The senior nodded at Primo before looking at the client named Mr. John. "So, Mr. John, what do you think?"

Mr. John kept his eyes on Primo sitting across from him. He smiled a bit, turning his head to the senior.

"He looks responsible and capable," said the man approvingly. "If you say he can help me, then I trust you."

Primo studied the client, gulping upon witnessing how the man’s lips curled up into a smirk. His hunch told him there was something dubious about this man, but right now, he couldn’t say anything. He didn’t even speak more than twenty words until his senior and client left his office.

All Primo could do when he was left in his office was stare at the documents in his hand. Sitting in the swivel chair, another deep exhale slipped past his lips.

"I’ve seen many sick bastards ever since I became a lawyer," he murmured. "And I’ve always told myself I’ll stay away from those sorts of cases. But this one... I don’t think I can do it."

Hours later...

"I don’t think I can do it," Primo declared, standing in the middle of the office of the senior who introduced him earlier to Mr. John. "Sir, I don’t think I can do it. I won’t take care of his case."

The senior paused after Primo came in and announced his intentions without beating around the bush. He stood in front of the stand in the corner, smiling, and then poured himself a glass of whiskey. As he did so, he spoke.

"Attorney Cafre, you’re a new senior associate. This case is something you should take care of," he remarked calmly, picking up the glass and facing Primo squarely. "Back when you were a junior associate, you didn’t handle cases like this. That last case that no one was willing to take proves you’re capable enough to be a senior associate."

"That’s why I am here." Primo took a deep breath and huffed, eyes on his boss. "I am now a senior associate, so I can choose which case I want to take on. This one with Mister John... isn’t it. It’s a losing battle."

"Are you afraid that this would be your first loss?"

"No, Sir."

"Then, take it."

"But —"

"Alexander." The senior strutted toward him and stopped a step before him. He rocked his head mildly while holding Primo’s gaze. "This case is something we can’t just let go. Have you read his record?"

"Yes." Primo lowered his head.

"So, I’m guessing you already know he’s the son of J Electronics." The senior raised a hand and placed it on Primo’s shoulder, squeezing it mildly. "You and I may not understand that someone like him, who already comes from a well-off family, could do something like that, but that isn’t our purpose."

Primo slowly raised his eyes, meeting the encouraging look plastered on his boss’s face.

"Our job isn’t to understand why these people are the way they are. Our job is to get them out of the mess they created because of who they are," the senior remarked, already aware of this fact a long time ago. "As long as they pay, that’s all that matters. If this will make you feel better, then if you win this case, you will never worry about your sibling’s future."

The senior squeezed Primo’s shoulder again before tapping it mildly. Retrieving his hand, he smiled and nodded once more.

"Don’t worry, Alex. Your client has a lot of money, so you’d get a lot of support," he reassured. "Just give it a try and show us your magic. You can do it."
