Chapter 821: Reality
Chapter 821: Reality
Having irresponsible parents, Primo always felt responsible for himself. At the tender age of four, he had to learn how to prepare his own food if there was anything in the fridge. If there wasn’t, he learned how to find something for himself.
His father had left him and his mother before he was born. From what he knew, his mother had tried to abort him multiple times, but she had failed, and here he was. Despite all of that, he learned to accept life was just as it was. If there was anything he was grateful for, it was that despite his mother’s promiscuous life and addiction, she didn’t bring another child into this world.
Primo smiled satisfactorily, leaning against the door frame, watching Mara, Martin, and Alexa sleeping soundly together. His eyes softened as he looked at them, feeling a sense of pride and excitement for their future.
"Things will be good from now on," he told himself, his lips stretching into a broader smile. "For sure, they will be. I won’t mess it up."
Mara, Alexa, and Martin weren’t his biological siblings. They were the children of Primo’s mother’s former lover. When his mother and her lover lived together, they brought these kids home. Back then, he kept wondering why two seemingly incompatible people would stay together and make innocent souls suffer. He never got the answer, but that didn’t matter anymore.
What mattered was that even after his mother and her lover were shot dead during a police raid, Primo was able to take care of them. He could imagine what kind of life they might have lived if those adults hadn’t been in a relationship. Moreover, these kids were very pure and loving. They motivated him to strive for the better, to work hard, and to be a better human being than the adults he had encountered growing up.
Primo quietly closed the door, walking to the kitchen to grab a can of beer. As he took a large gulp, he looked around the small apartment they had been living in. This small, old one-bedroom apartment was all he could afford in the past. While studying in law school, Primo had to juggle multiple part-time jobs to support his siblings. It was all they could afford back then.
"A lot of repairs..." he muttered, scanning the old apartment thoroughly. "Should I fix them, or should we move out?"
The side of his mouth stretched as he chuckled with closed lips. Moving out was not an option back then, but now, it didn’t really matter. He had some extra money, and knowing that he would be paid more, cleared up all the worries he had about the future.
"I should take them on a vacation on my next payday."

Three months later...
Life had been getting better for Primo and his siblings ever since his promotion. A hot shower was installed, some small repairs were done in their humble abode, the fridge was full, bills were paid, no more debts, and those kids were able to be kids. Adjusting to this life was a little tricky because the four of them weren’t used to it. But eventually, they were able to enjoy this comfort in life.
Primo was still working, a little busier than ever, but he still made time for his siblings. Mara, the young lady, was able to focus on her studies and school without worrying about unnecessary household chores, although she still mostly helped the helper Primo hired to take care of the children. Alexa and Martin were properly taken care of, and they had more than just water as snacks in school.
"I bought the tickets you asked for." A man walking beside Primo on the sidewalk pulled out four movie tickets. "I thought when you asked me for a favor, you were going on a date. But four tickets? Are these gifts?"
Primo smirked as he snatched the movie ticket from his colleague. "My siblings haven’t been to the theater, so I’m taking them. Thanks."
"Alex, are they really your siblings?" the man narrowed his eyes suspiciously. "To me, you’re more like their dad."
"Haha." Primo slid the tickets into his suit while saying, "Thanks for the ticket. I’ll transfer you the money later."
"There you go again." The other man clicked his tongue. "Man, you’re already at that age. You should start dating. I heard Prosecutor Michel is interested in you."
"More like she’s interested in crushing me."
"Don’t be like that. Work is work." The man shrugged, setting his eyes ahead and catching sight of their firm’s building. "We might stand on different ground, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t date. The worst that could happen is that you guys won’t meet in court because of your relationship."
"I’m not interested." Primo shook his head, taking out his identification card as they approached the building’s entrance. "My priorities right now aren’t that."
"Your priorities are your siblings?"
As the two men passed through the entrance of the building, Primo stopped and faced his colleague. "Yes. My priorities were my siblings. Until I make sure their future is secure, I won’t consider other things. You should think about your own. You aren’t getting any younger, and unlike me, who has responsibilities, you don’t."
With that said Primo turned around to leave. Before he took a step, he shook his head and chuckled.
"Prosecutor Mitchel?" he muttered. "Is he out of his mind? That woman will eat me alive."
"Hey, Alex! What do you mean I don’t have responsibilities?" As Primo walked away, his colleague scoffed as he just processed the sarcasm in Primo’s remarks. "Hey, come back here — wait for me!"
The man jogged to follow Primo, while the latter didn’t even slow down. When the man caught up in the elevator, he nagged Primo as he justified his circumstances. Obviously, Primo didn’t listen to it because, unlike him, this man came from a well-off family.
"So, it’s nonsense that you’re saying I don’t have responsibility—"
DING!
The second the elevator rang, Primo stepped out of the lift while the other man was still talking. The latter clicked his tongue in irritation, huffing, and then marched out to go to their office. On their way, Primo slowed down as he caught a senior of the law firm standing outside their office.
"Oh, there is our star lawyer!" the Senior cheered upon catching Primo from the corner of his eye. He spread his arms and grinned. "Attorney Cafre, good thing you’re back. Another case is waiting for you!"
Primo furrowed his brows as he slowed down, but eventually reached their team leader. He arched a brow and peeked through the entrance, only to see a man sitting inside.
