Chapter 820: The beginning
Meanwhile...
"I never thought that I’d ever work with you. However, I hope with this, we’d get the peace we seek, Alexander."
After Heaven said her piece, she ended the call shortly. Primo held the phone still before his hand fell to his side. He lay on his back in the soft grass near the rustic cabin, squinting a little as he stared at the clouds moving slowly in the clear blue sky.
"What a freaking day," he muttered, closing his eyes and smiling. "Heaven Liu. What a funny name. She’s more like a nightmare—or better yet, hell itself."
A moment of silence descended upon Primo. He listened to the humming of the wind and the chirping of the birds in the distance. The rustle of the bushes and trees harmonized with it, giving him a moment of tranquility. When Primo first moved into this old cabin, he was completely against it. But now, he couldn’t confidently say there weren’t any good things about living in the middle of nowhere.
Regardless of the noise he created outside moments ago, he was ironically at peace and unaffected. When was the last time he felt this kind of serenity? Primo pondered, eventually drifting into a slumber, and a memory from the past emerged.

[FLASHBACK]
"Brother, why are you not eating?" Martin, a five-year-old boy, looked up at his brother sitting across from him. "This ice cream is delicious. You should try it."
"I can share mine, big brother." A ten-year-old girl timidly spoke.
Primo glanced between the two children sitting across from him in the ice cream shop they’d been dreaming of visiting. A smile formed on his lips as he extended his arms to tousle their hair affectionately.
"Big brother is full," he said. "My teeth ache whenever I eat ice cream or anything cold. So, I’m alright. Just enjoy the ice cream, alright?"
The two children lowered their heads bashfully as their big brother ruffled their hair, retracting his hand gently afterward. Their lips formed a thin line as they nodded, and then they took small spoons to savor the ice cream. As they savored the cold delight, their eyes twinkled and their faces brightened up.
"Haha." Primo chuckled in delight, watching his little siblings look at him as if the taste of ice cream left them breathless. He leaned against the table, a wide grin on his face, "It’s good, isn’t it?"
The two children nodded enthusiastically.
"Then eat to your heart’s content. If you want more, just tell me. I’ll get you more."
"We can have more?" the timid young girl, Alexa, blurted out.
"Yes, Alexa." Primo nodded, chuckling. "You can have as much as you want."
"Big brother, are we celebrating something?" the little girl inquired curiously.
Primo grinned, glancing at his siblings. "I got promoted," he announced, expecting some reaction from them. However, the two children simply tilted their heads to the side, making him laugh out loud.
"Just think that your brother accomplished something very important," he said between chuckles.
The children grinned and nodded, eating their ice cream heartily. Even though they couldn’t understand what their brother was celebrating about, if it made him happy, then they were happy for him. Meanwhile, Primo watched his younger siblings relish their premium ice cream, a far cry from the usual store-bought variety.
"Martin, Alexa," he called after some time, picking up a napkin to wipe the corner of Martin’s mouth. "From today onwards, our life might be a little better."
They blinked innocently, staring at the warm smile plastered on their big brother’s face. However, Primo didn’t elaborate as he simply smiled.
"Let’s buy you guys some new clothes and shoes later," he said. "How’s that sound?"
The children looked at each other before shifting their attention back to him. Their eyes twinkled, and even before they could say anything, their bright expressions already gave away their excitement at the idea.

"Here."
A young lady sat on the floor in the small bedroom, poring over her studies at the tiny table nestled in the corner. She glanced up to find Primo leaning against the wall, a gentle smile on his face.
"Big brother..." she called softly, her brows furrowing in curiosity.
"I got Martin and Alexa some clothes and shoes. Also, picked out something for you," Primo said, nodding toward the paper bag resting atop her desk. "Didn’t know your taste, so I took a guess."
The lines between her brows deepened as she peered into the bag.
"What’s this?" she murmured, pulling out a dress, confusion knitting her brows. "Why, brother..."
"Try it on. See if you like it," Primo replied with a reassuring smile. "I got you some shoes too, but they got mixed up with the other bags. I’ll find them in a bit."
"Um..." She placed the dress down, her gaze still fixed on him. "Is everything alright, brother?"
"Hmm?"
"I know money’s tight. We don’t need extra things," she explained, concern clouding her expression. "Are you worried about the upcoming school event? You don’t have to. I can just wear our PE uniform. Can we return this?"
Primo gazed at his sixteen-year-old sister, overwhelmed with affection and understanding. She bore burdens far beyond her years, a consequence of their humble beginnings without support.
"Mara, don’t worry." He smiled, reassuring her. "I got a promotion at work. Won a big case and sealed the deal today, signing bonus and all."
"What?" Mara leaped up, wide-eyed. "Brother, you..."
"Yes." Primo nodded proudly, chuckling. "Debts are paid, rent’s covered ahead, and I ordered new uniforms for you. High time, right?"
Mara held her breath, trying to process the sudden turn of fortune. "Really? Are you serious?"
"Do you think I’ll splurge if not?" Primo handed her the paper bag with a grin. "Now, try this on."
Instead of grabbing the bag and dashing to the bathroom as expected, Mara flung herself into a hug. Primo paused, looking down at her with tenderness.
"Brother, does this mean... no more cold showers?" her voice trembled.
Primo’s eyes softened, and he hummed a soothing tune while gently patting her back.
"Yes. I arranged it — they might be set up tomorrow," he assured her. "You, Alexa, and Martin won’t need to boil water anymore. Things will be better, I promise. And college? You’ll sail through."
Mara giggled excitedly, then dashed off to try on the new dress. Primo chuckled, shaking his head affectionately. His siblings were so easily delighted.
He was grateful for the promotion, believing it would bring them the comfortable life they deserved. Little did he know, it would also introduce a person who’d turn their lives upside down.
