Chapter 814: Rank A mission II

THUD!

The sound of Theodore’s body hitting the ground echoed. Deborah and Hunter stared at the fat man standing not far away from their cage. Fig was still upside down from their perspective, holding a silencer gun to his left that was still pointing to where Theodore originally stood.

Smoke from the end of the muzzle ascended from it, proof that he was the one who ended Theodore and his ambition to become a don. Everything happened so fast that even though Deborah and Hunter had never looked away from Fig, they still barely grasped what happened.

What they only knew was that while Fig was confirming Deborah’s identity, he suddenly took out a gun from his suit. Without looking at Theodore, Fig opened fire, followed by Theodore’s death.

Turning his head, Hunter held his breath. His eyes caught the hole between Theodore’s brows, indicating this intruder’s excellent marksmanship.

"Who... are you?" Deborah’s voice shook, baffled at this person’s identity. "Did someone send you to kill me?"

"I just told you." Fig frowned. "Someone wants you alive, and thus, I am here to make sure you’ll live."

"Who?" Deborah blurted out, rummaging through her memories to have an idea of who wanted to help her. But alas, she couldn’t think of anyone. At least she couldn’t think of someone bold and capable enough to go against Dragon.

"You’ll find out." Fig breathed out as he looked around the torture room. He caught the fresh lifeless body in the corner but didn’t even bat an eye. "Those cages are strong, so I’ll probably have to wait for someone to bring me some keys."

"You’re going to wait?" Hunter blurted out, making Fig tilt his head to the side.

"I am not superhuman to break that metal cage with my bare hands," Fig replied calmly. "I know someone who can, but the old man isn’t here to help me. I was only asked to do this task as an assist, but the more I think about it, the more I realize I’m being exploited."

Fig sighed as he cast his eyes back to Deborah. "You shouldn’t have run away, Miss Deborah. You wouldn’t have to go through this if only you stayed where you were."

Deborah furrowed her brows, processing the man’s remarks. In a snap of a finger, her pupils dilated as she held her breath.

"It was you?" she gasped, eyes shaking. "You’re the one who saved me that time?"

"Yes." Fig nodded. "But you ran away. With my size, I couldn’t catch up so easily, so my partner for this mission had to track you down. Fortunately, it still wasn’t late."

Deborah kept her eye contact with the man who came to save her. Her lips parted, but her voice didn’t come out of her throat.

"Theo has the key!" Before the silence could settle in, Hunter exclaimed, earning Fig’s attention. "If he’s the one in charge of our punishment, then he probably has a key with him!"

"Oh... that makes sense, though a little reckless. That’s not how we do it," Fig commented before he trudged toward the dead Theodore. He searched the body without care for the blood crawling on the floor. Soon, he felt something jingle in Theodore’s pocket; he slipped his hand inside it and fished out a bunch of keys in a single loop of metal.

"Uh..." Fig lifted the keys in front of him. "Can you guys help me find the right key? It’ll take us forever if I try them one by one."

"I’ll do it!" Hunter unhesitatingly volunteered. "I worked for Dragon, and I used to oversee many of his places like this torture house. I can help!"

Fig looked at the cage and shrugged, marching toward it. He squatted down beside Hunter’s cage, showing him the keys in his hand.

"Which one?" Fig asked curiously. "They all look the same to me."

Hunter blinked hard, holding his breath, mentally screaming at himself to focus. His vision blurred as it zoomed in and out, compelling Hunter to slap himself hard.

"Don’t slap yourself," Fig advised, only to get ignored.

"Can you please move them closer?" Hunter requested, which Fig automatically abided. He squinted, moving his face closer, scanning the keys one by one. "That one!"

"Which one?" Fig furrowed his brows as he averted his gaze to the keys in his hand. He reached for one and asked, "This one?"

"No, the other one." Hunter shook his head. "Five keys from that one you’re holding — start to your right."

Fig followed the man’s instruction, counting aloud. "Five — this one?"

"Yes!"

"Okay." Fig shrugged nonchalantly, not sure if he should feel impressed since he still hadn’t proved it. He leisurely used the key to the padlock on Hunter’s cage. Much to his surprise, it unlocked in one try.

"Wow." This time, Fig nodded at Hunter in awe. "You’re good."

"That key is the same for Deborah." Hunter breathed out, having this slight sense of hope in his heart.

"Alright."

Without wasting a second, Fig pushed himself up and marched to the other cage. Just like what Hunter said, the same key was able to unlock Deborah’s cage. This time, he opened the cage and held out his hand.

"Come," he said. "Take my hand. I’ll pull you out of there."

Deborah nodded and swallowed a mouthful. She winced a little as her joints ached, slowly stretching them as she reached for Fig’s hand. When she clasped Fig’s hand, she was already panting and breaking out in sweats.

"I’m injured," she said. "So, make sure I get out of here in one pull —"

She couldn’t even finish the sentence when Fig pulled her up. Deborah scratched herself from the edges of the cage, but the pain only struck her when she clung to Fig’s clothes. Fig wrapped his arm around her body, looking away as she was naked.

"What about you?" he asked, setting his attention to Hunter, who was still inside his cage even though he had already unlocked it.

"You’ve been here since the beginning." Hunter let out a short chuckle. "I can’t move on my own."

Fig sighed as he gazed down at Deborah again. He reached for his smartwatch, saying,

"I got two injured people here. I need backup to complete the mission."

It took a few seconds for Fig to hear Joker’s voice from the smartwatch. "The path is clear. Take your time."

With that being said, Fig carried Deborah out of the cage carefully. He put her down beside the cage before he went to help Hunter out of the cage.
