Chapter 813: Rank A mission
CRACK CRICK CRACK
Deep lines etched between Hunter and Deborah’s brows. Besides their labored breaths, the sound of crumpling plastic reverberated in their ears.
"What’s that?" she whispered, about to look up when the door was abruptly kicked open.
"Good day, Traitors!" A contemptuous voice seized Hunter and Deborah’s attention.
The two peered down, spotting a towering man by the door. Despite the light casting shadows on their faces, the glint of their eyes in bright red was enough for the captives to anticipate another round of torture.
This was the fate of traitors: a cycle of torment that sought not to end lives but to shatter spirits until all will to resist faded away.
The clatter of metal echoed through the torture chamber as the newcomer dragged in a massive chain.
"Hunter... what in the world were you thinking?" the man taunted. "Your arrogance always vexes me. You ascended due to your intellect and skills, only to squander it all!"
He chuckled, straightening his posture, eyes fixating on one of the cages on the floor. His lips stretched in a malevolent grin, eyes gleaming with malice. He clicked his tongue, shaking his head.
"I warned you not to give me the chance to end you," he continued, his tone laden with wickedness. "But you disregarded my advice. Are you prepared for another bout of torture, Hunter?"
"Theodore," Hunter hissed. "You must be thrilled to finally have the chance to torment me."
"Absolutely! The boss authorized me to do as I please with you. Full control over your suffering," he gloated, eyes shifting to Deborah. "And you, Deborah, I still recall a time when you humiliated me. Once I’m done with Hunter, you’re next."
Deborah clenched her teeth, scrutinizing the man’s obscured face. Even in the dim light, she sensed the malevolence and lust in his gaze.
"I’d rather die..." her voice quivered, knowing deep down she was powerless. "Fuck you!"
"Haha!" The man cackled. "Yes, Debbie. Later, I’ll fuck you."
Licking his lips, he sauntered toward a corner, dragging the chain destined for Hunter’s torment.
"You’ve seen how many traitors met their demise over the years. Astonishing. I never believed Hunter was actually an agent," he remarked, reaching for the lever. "You know the fate of traitors and Dragon’s disdain for the authorities. Hunter, you’re in for quite a ride. Think you’re irreplaceable?"
He paused, glancing back at the cages, grinning. "Dragon promised me your position if I extract more information from you."
"Hah..." Hunter scoffed. "Dragon won’t hand my position to an incompetent like you. He’d rather dismantle it than allow someone like you to assume it."
Theodore sneered, visibly irked. "Speak your mind while you can. Soon, you won’t even have the strength for words."
"Theodore, please," Deborah interjected as he reached for the switch. "You’ve been in this organization longer than us. You know Dragon and Dimitri. They won’t trust you easily, especially after a spy infiltrated as one of their underbosses."
Theodore hesitated, gripping the lever but pausing.
"This isn’t worth it," she pleaded, reaching out to change Theodore’s mind, hoping for a miracle. "Please, Theo. Everyone here, except Dragon and Dimitri, is expendable. They’ll use us, discard us for their gain, and the cycle continues."
"Deborah," Hunter called out, but she ignored him.
"I didn’t betray them, Theodore. But what did Dragon do? He killed my sister. And now, after I sought revenge, he’s set to end me too," she implored. "Consider what happened to us. What makes you think you won’t meet the same fate one day?"
Theodore’s expression softened slightly as he glanced back at them, then twisted into a sly grin.
"Expendable except for Dragon and Dimitri?" he repeated mockingly. "Who claims that? This is the underground. Dragon was once just Reaper’s lackey. He might be the leader now, but who knows how long he’ll hold that throne?"
His smirk widened. "Ending both of you will be my step up. From there, I’ll ascend to the top."
Deborah’s heart sank, realizing Theodore harbored ambitions beyond usurping Hunter’s position. Even Hunter was astonished by the unabashed ambition the man declared. In an instant, the lights blazed on, forcing Hunter and Deborah to shut their eyes. But before they could reopen them, they heard Theodore’s panicked cry.
"Who are you?!"
Deborah and Hunter cautiously opened their eyes, finding Theodore in the corner, holding the lever, his gaze scanning the torture room. Following his line of sight, they spotted a portly man seated in the corner, his back against the wall, leisurely nibbling on the last cracker in his hand.
As the man crumpled the packet and stowed it away, the sound mirrored the persistent noise they’d heard since awakening. Deborah and Hunter exchanged puzzled looks, trying to discern the identity of this unexpected figure. Despite the upside-down perspective, they could discern his chubby face.
Who was this man?
"If you’ve been in the underground and remain a mere foot soldier, your aspiration to ascend to the top is pure delusion," the portly man spoke, savoring the cracker slowly. "Dragon might be an underboss among the Reapers, but he originally served as second in command under Miss Cruel—much like Tiger. Your audacity to seize his throne will expedite your demise."
Theodore, surprised by the sudden appearance of the portly man, gripped the chain defensively after a moment of bewilderment.
"You’re—"
"Ralph," interjected Fig, rising from the floor. "And I’m on a rank A mission with Joker."
He paused, glancing toward the nearby cages from his vantage point. "Are you Deborah?"
"Huh?" Deborah was taken aback, bewildered.
Fig blinked, then rolled up his sleeve to check the smartwatch Joker had provided. Deborah’s mugshot from a few years prior was displayed.
"You don’t match your mugshot, but there’s a resemblance," Fig remarked, redirecting his focus to Deborah. "Someone wants you alive."
"Hey!" Theodore shouted, tugging at the chains as he advanced toward the intruder. But before he could take a step, a swift noise cut through the air. A ’phew’ followed, and a hole abruptly materialized between his brows, sending his body crashing to the ground with a resounding thud.
