Chapter 812: We did our best
"Now that you mention it, when I met Dragon, he picked his enemies meticulously. Initially, I thought he simply wanted a low profile. But now that you mentioned it, it does make sense. He started making bold moves when Hera slowly succumbed to her ’disease,’ and he’s been unstoppable since then."
Another wave of silence befell their shoulders as neither Hunter nor Deborah dared to break it. Their exchange compelled them to remember the past. Both of them joined Dragon’s organization around the same time, with Hunter only a few months ahead before she joined. Back then, their enemies were still small-time dons. Despite Dragon’s growing power, wealth, and influence, their organization remained low profile.
Everyone thought Dragon was copying Hera Cruel’s way.
The Reapers were an infamous organization, but at the same time, remained low profile. Everyone knew about them, but there were times when people almost forgot about them because of how quiet and mysterious the organization was. Even so, prominent dons and bosses in the underground never dared to rub them the wrong way.
Therefore, since most of them knew Dragon was a former Reaper, they thought their organization would be like the Reapers. But alas, it only lasted for quite some time. Ever since Dragon got Hera in his custody, his every step was enough to make waves in the underground. Now, Dragon was infamous in the underground; his name was enough to bring terror into people’s hearts.
"So... everything is planned, huh?" Deborah’s voice was barely above a whisper as she realized she was wrong from the beginning. "They just waited for Hera Cruel to fall."
Hunter let out a short hum. "She’s the biggest obstacle they had to go through. She’s like a wall back then — a wall that is higher than a mountain. Climbing over that wall is impossible. So... so they broke it, pounding it until the wall showed cracks, taking advantage of it."
"Now, that wall has completely broken down," he added, laughing bitterly. "Hera Cruel... what a legend, but now, she’s nothing but his plaything. His doll. Everyone who hears about this will surely lose hope. If he could do this to her, then he could do this to everyone that catches his eyes."
Deborah slid her eyes to the corner, biting her tongue to stop herself from speaking. She looked away from Hunter, thinking about Hera once more.
’No,’she told herself. ’She hasn’t lost yet.’
A slight sense of hope crept into her heart, aware that Hera hadn’t lost completely yet. After all, Hera hadn’t lost her memories. She was simply acting, but then again, Deborah couldn’t help but wonder.
Why was Hera staying and playing along with Dragon?
Knowing who she was, she could easily get out of that mansion with her own abilities. After all, from what they heard, Hera once single-handedly infiltrated a prominent drug lord; everyone died except her. Was that rumor a mere hearsay?
’No, no. Don’t think about it.’Deborah shook her head, getting rid of their negative thoughts. ’There’s still hope.’
"We have to get out of here," Deborah huffed, turning her head in Hunter’s direction. "We have to get out of here, Hunter. Can you move?"
"Deborah, they broke both my feet. My femur is sticking out," his tone laced with sarcasm. "We’re done. It’s over. He caught on, and now he knows we were traitors. You know what happens to traitors, Deborah. He’s going to kill us, and he’ll kill us in the most agonizing way he could think of. There’s no way we can get out of here."
"Hera Cruel," she breathed out. "She’s still alive. She only lost her memories, but she’s still alive!"
"Even if she regains her memories, she can’t do anything!" Hunter argued. "Dragon is a lot more powerful now. Her people... most of them switched sides already."
"How about Ram?"
"Don’t mention him here."
"Dragon already caught on. Even if he finds out about your connection with Ram, it will not change a thing!" Deborah yelled as if she were running out of time. "If Ram and Hera get in contact, I’m sure something will change."
Hunter opened his mouth, but his voice got stuck in his throat. For a moment, he could only stare at Deborah before he sighed heavily.
"Debbie, Ram... is a leader of a country. He is someone who will think of the citizens first before anything else. It’s the reason he couldn’t go on a full-scale war with Dragon. Aside from the power Dragon has and his connections, he also has to think of Hera’s safety," he explained quietly and calmly. "I know you still want to survive, Deborah. I also want to survive this nightmare, but even if they get in contact, I don’t think we’d still be alive to witness that."
Deborah and Hunter stared at each other in silence. She opened and closed her mouth, ending up huffing as she looked away.
"So, we’re just going to die here?" she asked with a bitter laugh.
"We did our best."
"Hah..."
"We did our best, so even if we die, there’s no regret. Let’s leave the rest to those who will stay behind."
"No regrets?" she repeated, almost laughing at this joke. "If you think you’d die without regrets, then that’s you. I’d regret dying without even seeing him groveling while his world crumbled down one after another."
Another wave of silence followed Deborah’s remarks, with Hunter staring at her side profile. Another tear rolled down her temple, pitying her vengeful heart for meeting her demise without getting any justice for her sister’s death. But what else could they do? Their enemy was Dragon, and right now, both of them were not powerful enough to take the man down on their own.
As the silence hung in the air, both of them drifted into their own thoughts. As they did so, they couldn’t help but listen to the faint crumpling sound of plastic. It was as though someone was eating a pack of junk food in the same room as them.
