Chapter 807: You aren’t supposed to be here
"I am Heaven Liu..."
Deep lines appeared between Leo’s brows as he listened to Hera’s confession. The corner of his mouth curled up as a look of ridicule flickered across his eyes. Seeing the initial expression that graced his face at her confession forced Hera to make a decision.
"... friend." She forced out a breath, nodding at him. "Heaven and I were friends."
"Heaven and you?" Leo furrowed his brows. "Why would she be friends with you?"
"She and I also have the same question," she quipped. "Hera—I mean, I lived a very different life from her, but somehow, we got along well," she explained, hiding the truth with a beautiful smile. "That’s when I wasn’t imprisoned in this place. That time I got all the freedom in the world. Call it fate, but we’re friends."
Hera rocked her head, convinced she had devised a good excuse. "It’s also the reason I know you. I was there when you and Heaven still had a thing. I saw you once, but from a distance."
Leo assessed the look on her face, unable to conceal the doubt in his eyes. Hera maintained a smile as she let him evaluate her, but seeing that her excuse did not convince him compelled her to speak more.
"You dreamt of buying an island to retire quietly." She cleared her throat, telling him snippets of what he had used to tell her in the past. "You also liked children, so you supported a few orphanages and also the elderly. As an only child, you’ve always been lonely. So, you wanted a big family once you settled down."
Her smile cracked a little as her eyes softened a bit more. "There were more things she liked about you that she wouldn’t stop talking about. Should I continue to prove that Heaven and I were friends?"
The doubt in Leo’s eyes dwindled as he furrowed his brows. All he could do for a moment was stare at Hera, baffled as to how she knew this information. It was possible for her to know his background and general information about him, but some of those she mentioned were too personal for her to acquire through background checks.
"You talked day and night, with breaks in between. She loved starting her day with a short message from you," Hera said, her smile bittersweet. "A simple ’good morning’ and ’take care’ from you would make her day ten times better. She’d squeal when you called, taking deep breaths before answering. And after the call, she’d smile sadly because she didn’t want it to end."
"You..." She paused as she lifted her gaze to him, smiling gently and affectionately. "... motivates her, encourages her, and challenges her to strive better. She liked you to the point she would get distracted from memorizing her lines, but at the same time, she liked you so much she wanted to grow in her career to prove she deserves someone like you."
Hera bit her inner bottom lip as she gulped. "That is why it was painful for her that the cause of the end of your growing romance was her inability to see Paula’s true colors. A single night changed her life forever, and the loss of her father threw her into a wicked loop of misery."
"Heaven Liu loved you, Leo." She nodded at him, expressing her heart that she wouldn’t be able to say if not for this situation. "But her love for you isn’t enough to save her from herself. She lost her father and lover, and while she was grieving, she hurt her precious child in the process. She hurt her child over and over, making him live a miserable life, which she was never proud of."
Hera pressed her lips into a thin line, stopping herself from saying more before she had an emotional breakdown. Thinking of her life back then still makes her sad and leaves this unpleasant taste in her mouth. Even so, it only made her feel sentimental with the original Hera’s memories in the mix.
"From what I heard, she already recovered. It’s a little surprising since I’ve always seen her as a poor, pitiful soul. But surprisingly enough, she was able to recover and escape the loop she was stuck in for years. She was able to mend her crumbling marriage with Dominic; she was able to change her perspective and love her son unconditionally. And she was able to get back on her own two feet." Hera cleared her throat once again with this sense of pride in her voice. "Heaven... regained, or rather, rebuilt, the life she thought she had lost. Although I know she isn’t perfect, I’m sure she’s doing better now. Way better than before. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say she’s at the best point of her life."
"That’s why... I called you that night," she added, delving into the main point. "Aside from the fact I didn’t want to risk her hard-earned peace, she changed her number. I know what I am going to say is a little selfish of me, but luckily, she kept telling me about you before that I was able to memorize your number just because she had tons of moments she hesitated to call you first."
Her smile stretched wider as she huffed, relieved she was able to piece snippets of truths to make a complete lie. This was better, she thought. It was better to tell him that she was merely Heaven’s friend, instead of going through the hassle of explaining the real situation.
"I’m sorry," she expressed sincerely. "I sincerely apologize for putting you in this situation. Believe me or not, I didn’t mean to put you in this situation. I wasn’t thinking that night. Call it desperation, but I was simply trying to survive as well. It was a mistake on my part that I deeply regret."
Hera took a break once again as she held his gaze sincerely. "So please, Leo. You aren’t supposed to be here. Don’t put yourself in more danger. I’m already thinking of ways to get you out of here. Just stay out of trouble until then."
