Chapter 805: Escalating distrust
Heaven had always conveyed her ’dislike’ for Dane to Dominic. Initially, both Heaven and Dominic believed it stemmed from a hint of jealousy on her part. Despite Dominic making time for his family, he seemed to spend more time with his assistant due to work, which could have sparked her feelings. However, recent events had intensified Heaven’s aversion to Dane, now rooted in logic rather than just emotion. This escalating dislike led to distrust and raised questions about Dane’s loyalty and intentions.
Although Dominic trusted both Dane and his wife, this time he had to make a choice that wasn’t between Heaven and Dane. He needed to prioritize his family’s safety, setting aside personal feelings.
"Dane," Dominic called, seated in the backseat with eyes on the window.
Dane, who was in the front passenger seat, replied and glanced over his shoulder. "Yes, Sir?"
"After my next affairs, I’ll be going alone."
"Where are you going?"
"I want to breathe in some fresh air."
"Sir." This time, Dane turned his head to look at the backseat. "The election is nearing. I don’t think it’s safe for you to go somewhere alone."
Dominic didn’t reply immediately as he stared at the side road for a moment. "I don’t feel safe anywhere anyway," he expressed quietly. "With or without company, it’s the same."
"Sir."
"I’ll take Bear with me if that will appease you." Dominic slowly set his eyes on the front passenger seat, catching Dane’s pair of concerned eyes. "Perhaps it’s the election that I’m growing anxious about every passing day that I feel suffocated."
Dane pressed his lips into a thin line, studying the plain look on his boss’s face. Meanwhile, Bear, in the driver’s seat, glanced at the rearview mirror but didn’t speak.
"You deserve a break from time to time, Mr. Zhang. How long has it been since you’ve started working for me? In all those years, I can count your time off with my fingers. Now that I think about it, I’m sort of exploiting you," said Dominic to Dane calmly. "Take some time off."
"Sir, you’re not firing me, are you?"
"Dane, you’ve been with me for many years. If I’m firing you out, I wouldn’t be telling you this. Instead, you’ve already received a notice from the legal department to sign a closing agreement." Dominic smiled warmly, nodding at the man encouragingly. "All I’m saying is, since the election is in a couple of weeks, you and I need to have a clear mind until then."
"If I win, you, as my trusted righthand man, will also have to carry the responsibility I’m about to take," he continued in the same tone. "Until then, I want everyone around me to slowly gather their thoughts. Things will be different compared to running a business."
Dane kept his gaze on the man in the backseat. His lips were drawn into a thin line, and concern swirled in his eyes. After a moment, a deep exhale slipped past Dane as he nodded in understanding.
"Understood," he said. "Then, I’ll entrust you to Bear for now."
"Dane Zhang," Dominic called, earning Dane’s attention once again. "I trust you."
"Sir?"
"You know that before you took up this position as my executive assistant, many already had been with me but gave up within months. You’re the only person who lasted this long," Dominic expressed his heart sincerely. "I trust you and have always seen you as part of my family."
"Thank you." Dane sported a short smile as he nodded. "Though I don’t understand why you’re telling me all of this. It’s flattering, but at the same time, I feel a little awkward."
"Blame the election," Dominic humored. "Perhaps it’s also a sign of aging. After all, I feel sentimental lately."
"Is there something else bothering you aside from the election?"
"Nothing." Dominic shook his head, not surprised that Dane was asking questions that could lead to the true intention of his heart. Dane had worked for him for years and thus, it was no surprise Dane knew his boss.
"Are you sure, Sir?"
"Hundred percent." Dominic nodded reassuringly. "Don’t worry. If something is bothering me, you’re the first person to know."
Dane pressed his lips, but this time, the corners of his mouth were curled up into a smile. "Alright," he said. "I’ll stay throughout the event and then go home."
With that being said, silence instantly descended on them. Dane repositioned himself in the front passenger seat while Dominic kept his gaze on the seat in front of him. When he noticed someone’s gaze, Dominic glanced at the rearview mirror, only to see Bear looking at him briefly.
’I hope Dane didn’t take the subtle hint,’Dominic thought, looking away from the rearview mirror and setting his eyes on the window beside him. His lips were drawn into a thin and tight slash, tapping his fingers on his knuckles.
’Until she proves Dane isn’t the person I thought he was, I’ll have to be careful,’he thought, enduring the bitterness the idea brought to his mouth. ’I don’t like this feeling, but at the same time, making groundless accusations isn’t Hera’s style.’
As the quietness settled in the car, Bear couldn’t help but glance at Dominic through the rearview mirror. Dominic was back to staring at the sideroad. Bear would slide his eyes to the corner to check Dane. Just like normal, Dane would keep his eyes on the windshield, keeping a straight face, and making others wonder what was in his mind.
’Surely, it’s unpleasant to think Mr. Zhang could betray Dominic,’Bear thought, aware of the situation. ’Who would have thought that one of these days, we would be on this side of the rope?’
Despite everyone’s thoughts and inner struggle, no one broke the stifling silence in the car. The only time Bear’s voice pierced the quiet air was when they reached the plaza, announcing they had arrived.
Bear instinctively glanced at the rearview mirror, only to see Dominic’s plain countenance welcome a huge smile. Stepping out of the vehicle, some media anticipated his entrance.
’He will win, for sure,’ thought Bear, seeing that Dominic stood in front of the media with a wide smile. He then averted his eyes to Dane, furrowing his brows as Dane didn’t step out of the car like he would normally do. Instead, Dane watched Dominic from the front passenger seat while still carrying a solemn front.
’This is why she’s questioning your loyalty,’Bear thought, smiling at Dane as the man looked back at him. ’Your demeanor sometimes doesn’t match the persona you’ve presented to us.’
