After Dane and Tiger’s conversation, Tiger didn’t stay for long and left his meal unfinished. He bid Dane farewell before things could get even more awkward than they already were. Meanwhile, Dane remained in the dining room even after Tiger’s departure.

Dane gazed blankly at the vacant seat across from him, sitting motionless for minutes after his visitor left. His mind drifted elsewhere.

"I guess he liked her more than I thought he would," he murmured, recalling Tiger’s demeanor while discussing the situation with Ivy Wei. "I can’t blame him. She’s an amazing woman."

Dane blinked slowly, placing a hand on the table’s surface to push himself up. He turned around, strutting toward the living area, and then onto the balcony. Stepping out onto the balcony, Dane stood in front of the railing and took a deep breath. His eyes roamed the city lights, his expression plain.

"He’s right," he muttered to himself. "I had my chances. Countless chances. So, I do not have any right to pick up the stone I threw away just because someone else picked it up and saw it as their treasure."

He slowly looked up at the starless night sky. His grim expression remained the same, letting out a deep, indescribable exhale.

"Darling?" Heaven called to get Dominic’s attention as he waited for her to come home to join him for dinner. Her husband let out a short hum as he gazed up at her, seated at the end of the table while she was on his right.

"How did you know Dane Zhang?" she inquired, making his brows furrow. "And how did he become your executive assistant?"

"I already told you about it, didn’t I?" Dominic replied, tilting his head a little to the side. "Are you still suspicious of him, my love?"

Heaven had always been as transparent to her husband as she could be. Therefore, when she told him that she didn’t trust Dane, Dominic listened. Dominic held back some information from Dane, a habit he had developed since Silas reappeared in their lives. That time had a different reason, though.

Heaven sighed. "I know I didn’t like him at first because I see him as very incompetent, but I don’t know. The more I think about it, the more I don’t trust him. I always trust my gut feeling."

"And what is your gut feeling telling you now?"

"That there’s more reason I don’t trust him."

"Because he’s incompetent?" Dominic guessed, familiar with his wife’s sentiments toward the man.

Heaven had been vocal about Dane’s incompetence, especially when they found out that Primo’s men were able to infiltrate Dominic’s life without anyone knowing. Her reason was valid, considering everyone who would work closely with Dominic would be going through Dane.

"I’m not judging your hunches, darling, but I still think there’s a reason Primo’s men were able to infiltrate my household," Dominic remarked. "Dane has a lot on his plate on top of screening the people who would work closely with me. He’s not a superhuman. Even I make mistakes, and considering Primo was smart, he’d find his way one way or another."

"His incompetence dates back to that time you were drugged and slept with Heaven," she replied, reminding him of that particular time in their lives. "Though everything worked out in the end, I don’t think that scenario was properly addressed."

Dominic squinted his eyes as if this was the only time he thought of that. Seeing his reaction, Heaven couldn’t help but let out a deep exhale.

"Darling, just think about it. At that time, Dane is already working for you. I still find it strange that he didn’t know you were drugged and who drugged you..." she trailed off as she pondered. "Or maybe he knew... because it was his doing all along."

"Heaven, I think you’re going a little too fast."

"Am I?" she replied, raising her brows slightly. "Do you really think I’m going too fast at this pace, Dom? I’ve been in this body long enough to delude myself and take a liking toward Dane Zhang. However, until now, even when we already have Miracle, I can’t bring myself to."

Heaven pressed her lips together, shaking her head mildly. "Love, I’m not ruling out the possibility he might be innocent all along. However, I can’t simply trust him just because he was already in your life before I came into the picture."

"My love, you already know what kind of business I had before." She reached out her hand, holding his and squeezing it mildly. "I deployed people to missions. You got the list of people I sent to a mission, and you are aware that all of them now have a new name, a new identity. They even changed their personality and the person they were to succeed in their mission."

"Take Wolf, for example," she continued, nodding at him slowly. "I would not be surprised if Dane is like them. I might be wrong, but the possibility exists, darling. Call me crazy, but just think about it."

Dominic and Heaven stared at each other, with her nodding at him encouragingly. The corner of his lips curled up a little as he nodded back.

"I’ll keep that in mind," he said. "Don’t worry. I know everything is crucial at the moment, and although I feel terrible about the mere thought I’ve been nurturing someone like him."

Heaven smiled bitterly and sighed. "I’m sorry."

"Why?"

"I think it’s karma." She shook her head as she cleared her throat. "Sending out people for missions is different. The thought that now I’m on the receiving end feels a little terrible."

Dominic smiled as he squeezed her hand mildly. "I won’t deny that it does feel unpleasant. Though I don’t understand why me?"

"I don’t know." She shrugged. "Maybe because you’re Dominic Zhu?"

"Whatever it is, I still thank you," he expressed, nodding at her reassuringly. "If this is true, whatever reason he had, I’m sure I wouldn’t be safe. Am I correct?"

Heaven forced a smile. "Yes."

"Then it’s still a good thing we’re aware of the possibility." Dominic nodded at her again. "Let’s finish our meal. The kids are staying in our room tonight. I already asked someone to prepare the bedroom."

Hearing his remarks, a smile turned up on her face. With that being said, the couple finished their meal and immediately joined their children for a family night. Even so, at the back of their heads, the questions in Dane’s mind lingered.
