Chapter 803: Could you blame her?

"How was she? Miss Wei, Tiger. I heard that the two of you are on good terms, so I was wondering how everything is between the two of you."

Tiger chewed his food slowly, gazing up at Dane and noticing the slight curiosity in the latter’s eyes. When he swallowed a moment later, he smacked his lips.

"Everything’s great," he answered with a slight smile. "She’s good, fun, and, you know, the rest."

"I see." Dane nodded in understanding. "Glad to hear you two are doing okay."

"Thanks to you."

"Huh?"

"If not for you, Vivi and I wouldn’t have had this chance. I mean, I also didn’t like her at first, thinking she was a loose cannon and a little too feeble for me." Tiger shrugged nonchalantly. "But it turns out I really can’t judge a book by its cover. Ivy is a wonderful woman. She’s real and honest with her feelings. She can be a little fickle at times, but when necessary, she stands her ground."

"I don’t need to elaborate on that part since I think you of all people knew how adamant she can be when she sets her eyes on something," he added, raising his brows to give him a knowing look. "Overall, it’s great. Though we’re not together yet. We’re still in the getting-to-know part, but she’s more keen on loving herself more."

"Is that so?"

"Is that so?" Tiger repeated, arching his brow a little. "What does that relief in your tone mean, Mr. Zhang?"

"What?" Dane furrowed his brows. "I’m just saying—"

"You like Ivy Wei, don’t you?" Tiger stopped him mid-sentence, cocking his head to the side. "You liked her back then too, but you thought she would always stay in the same place for you. You got used to her chasing you around, felt relieved whenever she appeared out of nowhere, and then enjoyed it every time you hurt her feelings."

Tiger put down his cutlery, leaning his arm against the edge of the table. "Are you a sadist?"

"Tiger, what nonsense are you spewing?" Dane frowned deeply. "Don’t tell me you’re jealous that Miss Wei liked me before?"

"I’m not jealous."

"If so, then that’s good. All I’m trying to say is it’s good if you two are on great terms. After all, she’s affiliated with the company, and you’re an employee in the Lyon Group."

"Correction. I don’t work for the Lyon Group anymore. You and I now work for Dominic Zhu alone." Tiger corrected, shaking his head mildly, eyes on him. "Stop using this damn excuse. It won’t work anymore."

Dane opened his mouth to argue but ended up closing it and sighing. He kept his gaze on Tiger as silence descended on their shoulders.

"Maybe," he expressed quietly, eyes still on Tiger. "I liked her before and was flattered she liked someone like me, but I see her as a distraction from building my career here. I chased her away, avoided her, and purposely hurt her feelings with those thoughts in mind."

"But now that I’ve thought about it, after what happened in the Lyon Group’s Anniversary, I realized just how short life is," he continued solemnly. "It’s crazy that I only realized it right after rejecting her for the last time. After that, she stopped sending me random messages, she stopped showing up where I was, and she stopped looking at me the way she used to."

A bitter smile took over Dane’s face as he lowered his gaze. "She still shines brightly and radiates whenever we meet. She still smiles the same, yet I don’t see the same longing and hope in her eyes anymore. She felt distant every time I saw her, and recently, she felt like she was already somewhere I could not reach anymore."

"Only then did I realize I was complacent," he continued as he raised his eyes back to Tiger. "I thought she’d always wait for me; I thought she would continue appearing in front of me with her random confessions even after I rejected her the last time. When she said she would finally accept my decision, I unknowingly thought in the back of my head that she would still bother me."

"She didn’t." He smiled, making his eyes turn a little soft. "Instead, she started seeing someone else, and as if by magic, she no longer looked at me the same way she looked at me for years."

"Can you blame her?" Tiger replied after listening to the man’s sentiments. "You said it yourself, she spent years pursuing a man who never hesitated to speak all the harshest words he could think of at the top of his head. It took her years to finally let the man go for his own sake and also her own sanity. For the first time in many years, she took up the courage to do something for herself. Even when she was tempted to enter another relationship, she forced herself to pause and breathe for a while, allowing things to flow naturally instead."

Tiger paused, holding Dane’s gaze sternly. "Could you blame her that after years, she is finally choosing her own peace of mind?"

"Mr. Zhang, I would understand your sentiments if you two really didn’t have any chance to be together. However, that is not the case. You had all the chance in the world, all these years, to try and see what fate has for the two of you. But alas, you neglected and ignored it, thinking she would not get tired someday."

"If there is someone to blame, that is you," he added, putting stress in each of his words. "Now that you have a change of heart and saw her value, it’s unfortunate that it’s too late because I’m already in the picture."

Tiger didn’t hesitate to speak his mind, never looking away from Dane. "I’m going to marry Ivy Wei. I know I don’t need your blessings and that I don’t need to tell you everything about this matter, but because you’re my buddy, I felt like telling you what’s in my mind is just right."

"You had years and countless chances, but you chose to ignore them, Mr. Zhang," he added quietly but solemnly. "Accept that you screwed everything up because if you don’t, then I will be the one you’d be going against. I will crush you to the bones if you decide to butt in my business."

Silence instantly descended on them as they looked at each other. Tiger’s eyes glinted with seriousness while Dane maintained a quiet and meek air. Both of them understood the gravity of the situation they would be in with one wrong decision.
