Chapter 799: Starting point

Chapter 799: Starting point

[MAXIMUM PENITENTIARY]

Silas slowly opened his eyes, catching sight of the dirty ceiling almost immediately. A shallow breath slipped past his lips before he sat up, his head only just reaching the concrete ceiling. He bent his knees, took a deep breath, and closed his eyes, as if to meditate.

’Who would have thought?’ he mused, slowly reopening his eyes.

He pressed his lips into a thin line, stretching his legs until his feet hung over the top bunk bed. Silas swiftly jumped out of the top bed and landed safely. Turning his head to the lower bunk, another sharp huff escaped him.

Usually, at a time like this, Primo would be doing his rosary. Whenever Silas made even the slightest noise, Primo would make a huge fuss about it, as if Primo were truly turning to whatever God he was praying to.

There were a lot of things that annoyed Silas about Primo. Being locked up in the same cell as that man was hell. Primo had been treating Silas as his lackey, someone beneath him. He would openly steal Silas’s food ration. There wasn’t a day in Silas’s life that he hadn’t prayed for Primo to choke on his food.

But now, the lower bunk was empty, and there wasn’t any trace of Primo aside from the memories he had in this place.

"Lucky bastard," Silas hissed as he shook his head, shuffling toward the lower bunk to sit on the edge. He rested his arms on his spread legs, his eyes scanning the four corners of this small space he was locked in alone.

Another deep exhale slipped past his lips. "Now I am all alone in here. What a peaceful life I have now," he muttered, bending his knees as he lay on the lower bunk bed. "Or maybe not. This place somehow feels a lot more dead and boring than usual."

Even Silas was surprised to realize that even though there wasn’t a day he didn’t wish for Primo to die miserably, his absence would make such an impact. Now that he was all alone in this small space without any freedom to go out and do something else without anyone to talk to, the silence somehow felt a lot more profound. Back then, Silas didn’t realize that having company was a distraction from everything that led to his arrest. But now that he was in this place all alone, everything rushed back to him — this time, much more profound than ever.

The process of getting out of prison was just as grueling as when he was taken into custody. It took him many hours to go through different stages of clearing, making him think Heaven didn’t give him special treatment in getting out. Not that this was the first time he had gone through such a hassle in the past.

Standing outside in the scorching midday sun, Primo looked up and squinted his eyes. Normally, people who were imprisoned even for only a few months would appreciate their first taste of freedom. But his annoyed expression showed his lack of appreciation for his release.

Primo jogged toward the shed, standing underneath it to wait for someone to pick him up. His face was naturally scrunched up, and he turned his head to the loud sound clapping in his ear. There, racing through the side lane, was a luxury black sedan, which timely stopped right in front of him.

When the front passenger seat wound down, he lowered his head to see the person in the front driver’s seat.

"Congratulations on getting your freedom back!" Heaven grinned, but his nonchalant expression didn’t change.

"Will you open the door?" he asked, hand on the handle. "I’ll die of heatstroke if I keep standing here."

Heaven laughed and unlocked the door, and Primo didn’t waste time hitching inside the front passenger seat. Looking at him, who was immediately fixing the air conditioner to him, Heaven smirked.

"I was thinking of how long you’d last under this weather, but then I remember I still need you," she humored, earning a cold look from him. "Cheer up, No One. This is a happy day for you."

"Well, I guess you’re right," Primo replied sarcastically. "What a good day to get out of prison just to go to hell."

He cocked his head back as his eyes slid to the corner. "If this is not called jumping out of the pan straight to the fire, I don’t know what this is."

"You’re so grumpy. Come on, No One. I’m here for you." Heaven winked playfully. "I got your back. Don’t you trust me? I got you out of prison even though you once tried to wipe out my entire family, including my innocent boy."

Primo deadpanned, looking at her dead in the eye. "That’s the same reason I don’t trust you. I tried to kill your family once and abducted your little boy. I’m not hoping that you’d find some sympathy in you and won’t simply let me die pathetically."

Heaven maintained a playful smile. "You judge too quickly."

"Did you forgive me for what I’ve done?" he asked unenthusiastically.

"You wouldn’t be here if I didn’t find forgiveness existing in my heart," she replied as she faced ahead, hands on the steering wheel, ready to drive away.

Primo raised a brow, squinting his eyes suspiciously. "Did you forget about that now? And is ready to start with a clean slate?"

"Hehe." Heaven cocked her head back, her lips stretching wider as a playful glint flickered across her eyes. She shook her head as she said, "Never."

His expression instantly died while she laughed. Heaven looked away from him, setting them ahead, full smiles.

"We’re not starting on a clean slate, Alexander," she said, her voice turning solemn. "We’re starting with experience. Unlike when you and I started in this pathetic life, we already know what we truly want."

She looked back at him and smirked. "Am I right?" her eyes shone knowingly before she sped away, taking him to a place that they would all call their starting point.

"So, what’s the plan?" Primo inquired as they drove the freeway. "I got out of prison, all my men are either dead or turned their backs on me, and if my enemies heard I am still alive, they will do everything they can to kill me."

He drew a deep breath and huffed quietly, eyes on the road. "Don’t get me wrong. If I can be of use, then I don’t mind enjoying fleeting freedom rather than wasting my youth and spending the rest of my life inside that damn sixty square feet room."

"Don’t worry about that. I already started before your release," she explained with a smile, making him turn his head to the driver’s seat. "The underground world is in chaos and Dragon will lose City Y tonight."

"What did you do?" he asked out of pure curiosity.

"I’ll let you know later. For now, clear your head and get some sleep. It’ll be a long drive."

"I’m not going to sleep in a place you can access me."

"I don’t need to do something bad to you when you’re already on your way to your death."

"Didn’t you say you got my back?"

"I did, but I can’t promise."

Primo opened his mouth, but in the end, kept his thoughts to himself. He shook his head and sighed.

"Why am I disappointed?" he muttered nonchalantly, looking away from her. "Anyway, since I already accepted that my luck might’ve run out, I won’t expect anything from you. But then again, that won’t stop me from wanting to know why Dragon?"

He reclined the chair and looked at her side profile. "It’s strange, Missus Liu. Since we’re starting with experience, I should let you know I know your life story. I know which school you went to, met some classmates, and even know where your father’s remains lie."

"I even know you had a rough start with Dominic Zhu and that you didn’t want that child in the beginning," he continued, shrugging nonchalantly as he didn’t feel the need to hide the past from her. "The reason I approached Paula Shen is because I thought I could be your crying shoulder."

"Now that you mention that, why were you trying to approach me? Because of Dom? Why did you target Dom? I have my guesses, but I haven’t confirmed yet."

"I asked first, Missus Zhu." He rolled his eyes. "I will answer everything since I don’t mind, but I’m not sure about you. I don’t trust you."

Heaven briefly cast him a sidelong glance before she set her eyes back on the road. "Your question was, why Dragon, right?" she repeated, humming a long tune as she pondered.

"It’s because he crossed the line he shouldn’t. But I can’t retaliate boldly even if I want to because I have kids to protect. Even when I’m confident I can protect them, I don’t want to risk their lives because of my decision,’ she explained honestly, but keeping the details to herself. "I’m not scared of getting hurt or fighting the Dragon of the Underground. What scares me is that my children might pay the price."

Primo stared at her side profile quietly before he looked away. "I see," he whispered, understanding the depths of her explanation because once in his life, he was in the same position as her.
