Chapter 793: Alliance
"Hunter, you’re an undercover agent?"
A moment of silence descended upon the room as Deborah held her breath. Her pupils dilated until her eyes shook. Hunter, on the other hand, simply let out a shallow breath.
"With this organization’s recent activities, it garnered international attention. Dragon fearlessly went against even the most powerful governments, ruining their trades and even committing unspeakable crimes. Therefore, they gathered an elite unit and each country sent a few agents as representatives to take him down," Hunter explained as he jerked his chin toward the card in Deborah’s grip. "There were a few agents who got in, but I’m the only one who reached this position."
"Even so, Dragon is a smart man. With Dimitri in hiding, it’s hard to move recklessly and catch them. That is why, even with this position, I am stuck in here," he added. "Deborah, you’re lucky I’ve caught you entering and erased the footage. If not, you’d already be in the torture house, crying and begging to die. When you left, Dragon added a few security footages in places you used before, in case you will be back and try to harm Hera Cruel."
Deborah opened and closed her mouth like a fish but was unable to say anything. She expected the worst when Hunter caught her, but not this. Especially, she wasn’t prepared to hear that this man, who was like a boss to her, was an undercover agent.
"Wait..." Deborah pinched the bridge of her nose as if that would clear her mind. "Hunter, I don’t understand. You’re an undercover agent on a mission. Let’s say that’s true. But how about Tarrah? If Dragon didn’t kill my sister, then why did he send people to kill me? Don’t lie to me, Hunter. I know it’s him."
"Because he had to prove he hadn’t changed his mind." Hunter’s answer was quick and unfaltering. "Dimitri was talking about Dragon turning soft just because he didn’t make a quick decision after he found out about what you did to Hera. So, he sent people to kill you."
He cocked his head to the side as his brows rose. "Debbie, with your sister’s death, don’t you just want to die as well? Isn’t it much better if you just follow her? Even if we both know you’d go to hell and not to the place where your sister would go, it’s better if you just die."
"What..." Deborah trailed off as she let out a weak scoff. But deep in her heart, what he said had some truth in it.
When Deborah found out her sister died, she wanted to kill herself. If Dragon’s men didn’t appear almost immediately, she would’ve killed herself. After all, she was aware that any attempts to retaliate were futile. Yet, she was doing so for the sake of revenge; for the sake of telling herself she tried, even when it was futile.
"Crazy how people in this place could find solace with such logic, but after being in this place for years, it’s somehow understandable," Hunter expressed. "It’s not worth it, Deborah."
"How... is it not worth it?" tears brimmed in her eyes as her knees wobbled. "I lost my sister and even if I do everything with all my power, I know the man who killed her never lost a wink of sleep. Hunter, how can I just stop now after everything?"
"I’m not telling you to stop," Hunter clarified in a clear tone. "All I’m saying is it’s not worth it if you’re simply self-destructing. You know, fighting alone is futile. All your efforts will just go down the drain and even before you reach your goal, you’d be dead."
He paused and let her process his last remarks. "I’m an undercover agent, Deborah. Do you have any idea which country sent me?"
"Who... sent you?"
This time, Hunter didn’t answer immediately. He only stared at her as if letting her guess who sent him to this place.
"You..." Deborah’s breath hitched as she guessed whose order Hunter was taking. "Don’t tell me...?"
"Yes." Hunter nodded. "It’s him. The person who had been in negotiation with Dragon, and also, one of the key people who could cement Dragon’s power in the underground."
"Ram," she whispered, and Hunter nodded. Her already wide eyes dilated even more as she held her breath. "You’re saying?"
"There’s a reason Dragon doesn’t underestimate the man, Deborah. Right now, Ram is looking for more people who could help him take down this organization. I won’t disclose any further information until you meet him and prove taking you in is not a mistake," he explained without a moment’s hesitation. "What do you say? Do you want to join hands with us and take down Dragon and Dimitri?"
Deborah’s lips parted, unable to look away from Hunter. Earlier today, Hera asked her to find Ram for her. Even though Deborah was slightly confused at Hera’s request, she now understood why she specifically named Ram.
"I trust you," she huffed, calming down as she recomposed herself. "But, not to the extent I will entrust my life to you. If you think I have to prove something to you, then it’s the same for you. You have to prove that I can trust you and that we’ll have a chance to take down these devils that are reigning in this world."
Deborah and Hunter looked at each other in silence before the man nodded. Hunter quietly shoved his hand inside his suit, taking out his phone, and putting it on his ear while still keeping his eyes on Deborah.
"It’s me," Hunter spoke to the person on the other end of the line. "I found her... yes, she’s with me right now. It’s just as you said. She came back, foolishly rushing to her death."
Deborah frowned but didn’t say anything, listening to Hunter and guessing what they were talking about at the moment.
"Mhm. I told her about you." He snapped his eyes back to her, rocking his head. "Alright. I’ll take her to the secret meeting place."
After saying his piece, Hunter ended the call and put his phone back in his suit. "There’s an unguarded route, which will lead you to the guest’s house. I assume you already know that way?"
"Of course."
"I’ll meet you there at ten in the evening." Hunter nodded at her. "Hide and don’t get caught until then."
Deborah stared at Hunter before she let out a sigh and nodded. With that said, Hunter left the storage before Deborah went to the guest’s house, taking the path he told her to.
