Chapter 784: Do you... really love me?

"Aw... ouch." Hera winced in pain, watching the doctor stitch her wound. She had cut her finger so deeply that it almost exposed her bone -- even surprising her. When Dragon saw how deep it was, he called for the in-house doctor to stitch it up, leading to Hera’s current situation.

"Miss Hera, how can you be so careless?" the doctor sighed as soon as he finished the suture, looking at her as if she were a troublemaker. "You were supposed to cut the stem, not your finger."

Hera lowered her head, casting a glance at Dragon across the room for help. The man simply watched her with his back against the wall. Seeing that he showed no sign of helping her, she sighed and listened to an earful of scolding.

"For now, I forbid you from arranging a vase," the doctor said after several rounds of nagging. "Until you recover, you can’t arrange the vase or do anything that could reopen your wound. Do you hear me, Miss Hera?"

"Yes, doctor," she replied with reluctance. "I’m sorry."

The doctor sighed deeply and glanced at Dragon. The latter simply nodded, and the doctor redirected his attention back to Hera.

"I prescribed you pain medication if the pain is too much," the doctor added, giving her a bunch of life lessons and reminders before bidding them farewell.

As the doctor left, Hera’s frown deepened. Her gaze followed the doctor’s figure, sighing as one of Dragon’s bodyguards closed the door the moment the doctor stepped out. She kept her eyes on the door until Dragon sat down beside her on the edge of the bed.

"Let me see again," he asked, reaching for her wrist to check her bandaged finger.

"Um..." she hummed while he assessed her finger as if checking if what the doctor did was correct. "Frank?"

"Hmm?"

"Are you angry?" she asked nervously, waiting for his reply, which took several seconds.

"Are you scared of me, Hera?" he returned instead of answering her question. A moment of hesitation flickered across her eyes.

"No." She shook her head. "Why would I be scared of you?"

"Then why did you hide it from me?" His question came almost immediately. "Why were you saying sorry incessantly, as if you’re afraid of me?"

"I’m not scared of you," she repeated under her breath, casting her eyes down to her hand between them. "You’re not the one that scares me, Frank. It was your reaction."

"My reaction?"

Hera looked up at him, this time, with slight resolution in her eyes. "I was in a coma for many years, and all those times, I’m sure, at one point, you felt miserable, lonely, upset, tired, and also helpless. Yet, even when others told you there’s only one percent chance that I will wake up, you held on to that one percent chance."

"That is why I understand I constantly worry you and that you’re taking extra measures to make sure I would be fine," she continued as tears started to coat her eyes again. "You’ve done your best, and still do everything you can. I, on the other hand, had grown complacent and wasn’t careful."

She paused as she gauged his reaction. "That’s why I was scared. Who knows? After all those years, this one time might just be the last straw. I’m scared... that this will make you think I don’t value your efforts and that I’m sabotaging you — this second chance granted to us."

"I’m scared that you’d get angry and won’t see me anymore." Her voice cracked as she held back the tears attempting to escape her eyes. "That’s why I was sorry because now you’d have to worry about me again."

Dragon didn’t say anything to her explanation. Instead, he just stared at her quietly, assessing that miserable look on her face. After an entire minute of silence, he exhaled through his mouth.

"Even if this didn’t happen, I’d keep worrying about you," he admitted, giving her hand back to her, only to notice the red stain on her dress. "I’ll get you a pair of clothes to change. Stay there."

With that being said, Dragon pushed himself away from the bed. As he marched toward the closet, Hera’s eyes went wide as her breath hitched. Meanwhile, the person hiding inside the closet also froze on the spot.

’No,’Deborah screamed in her mind, cold sweats dampening her from head to toe. She watched Dragon come closer and closer through the gap, heart pounding until it was echoing in her ears. When Dragon stood in front of the closet, Deborah completely stopped breathing.

He would find her.

With that thought in mind, Deborah slowly lowered her hand from her mouth. She carefully felt her pocket, reaching for the small gun she kept with her. She clenched her teeth until her gums were bleeding, ready to go into battle the moment Dragon opened the closet.

’One...’she whispered in her head. ’Two...’

Time seemed to slow down for Deborah as she caught him reaching for the closet handle. When she was about to pull out her gun, Dragon suddenly stopped after opening the closet just an inch. Deborah’s eyes widened as she froze, gulping nervously, staring at Dragon’s face to find out why he stopped.

Dragon slowly gazed down. A pair of hands were locked in front of him, being hugged from behind.

"Just get angry at me, Frank," Hera whispered, clutching his clothes and resting her forehead against his back. "Scold me or say something mean, at least. I’d rather you react that way instead of just keeping quiet."

She paused for a moment as if to ponder. "You said you hate liars, so I will confess. I don’t like it when you don’t tell me what you truly feel or what you’re thinking. I can’t help but feel that... there’s always this huge wall between us. We might be together, but somehow, it always makes me feel I can never reach you no matter how hard I try."

"Frank," she continued, almost on the verge of crying. "Do you... really love me? Or were you just keeping me because you feel responsible for me?"
