Chapter 774: Let’s go crazy
Admit it or not, many members of the Reapers could clearly see the stark contrast in their lives before and now. In the days preceding Hera’s demise, every waking moment seemed like a ceaseless revelry, albeit not of the enjoyable type. Peace eluded them entirely. Genuine, enduring peace had been a rare occasion.
Hera’s departure left an agonizing void, a hollow in their hearts that remained untouched by anyone or anything else. This is precisely why they mourned her loss for as long as their memories could stretch. Yet, her absence also exposed them to a life devoid of her presence. Hence, having her back and everything restored wasn’t an unmitigated cascade of rainbows and butterflies.
"I may have you now, but I no longer have complete dominion over the Reapers," Heaven lamented with a heavy heart. "No matter how hard I try, I will never succeed. Not in this body. Not as Heaven Liu."
Tiger observed the billowing smoke as he listened to her sentiments quietly. It took three arduous days of persuasion, lungs polluted by secondhand smoke, and sacrificed sleep to convince them. If she aimed to rally the remaining Reapers, three days wouldn’t suffice. Their skepticism could become insurmountable, especially with Dragon hot on her trail. That man would catch up before she could achieve anything.
"I hate this feeling, Clark," she continued in a subdued tone. "This sense of helplessness; the feeling that I must act, even if it entails compromising my principles, risking my family, and assuming a persona I abhor."
Heaven paused, her hand gently grazing her neck. "I can feel it again. The noose. I feel it brushing against my shoulders with every movement, a depressing reminder that one misstep could send me toppling into the abyss as a consequence of my own recklessness."
"Even after running — sprinting so tirelessly, this inferno managed to catch up with me somehow." A brief, bitter laugh escaped her lips as she lowered her hand from her neck. "Isn’t that freaking depressing?"
Normally, Tiger would respond to her sentiments with either a witty remark or profound insight. However, at this moment, all he could do was consume the last remnants of his cigarette in silence.
"Let’s do it," he declared after taking a final, long drag, dropping the cigarette butt on the concrete ground, and extinguishing it beneath his shoe.
"Hmm?" She raised her eyebrows, looking back at him.
"Let’s end him," he clarified, straightening his posture, and sliding his hands into his pockets as he faced her. "Frank. Let’s put an end to him once and for all and reclaim our lives."
Heaven studied him quietly, assessing the nonchalant expression on his face.
"You’re concerned about Miri and Basti, Dominic, Axel, your parents-in-law, Old Madam Zhu; you’re worried about Leo, the real Heaven, and even that jerk, No One. Let’s stop there, Hera. Let’s stop worrying."
Tiger stepped closer, pointing a finger at her chest. "You know the root of our problems; that’s the first step. And you know how to resolve it — that’s another step."
"To fix this, we have to keep moving forward. That noose around your neck... has always been there," he added, emphasizing his point by pressing her chest. "But you were never afraid of it. Who cares if there’s a misstep? Just cling to the damn rope until we find a way to cut it. That’s why... let’s stop worrying — let’s be reckless."
He lowered his head as he withdrew his finger, gripping her shoulders tightly. "They want crazy; show them what crazy means. One last time, Hera. Consider this our final mission, and afterward? Take Basti, Miri, and Dominic—take Axel too, to a place where no one else can find you."
"One last time," he exhaled, nodding encouragingly. "Let’s not hesitate because we have too much to lose, but rather, let it be the very reason we shouldn’t hesitate. We have so much at stake now, Hera, and we can’t afford to stop because a moment’s hesitation might cost us everything."
Tiger had dedicated ample time to contemplate, particularly after engaging in brief calls or exchanging short messages with Ivy. He couldn’t deny the desire to see her, even if just for a moment, lingered within him. However, whenever thoughts about their situation resurfaced in his head, he would escape by finding solace elsewhere or aimlessly driving around the city.
Thinking about it, Tiger realized Ivy was his only concern. In contrast, Hera harbored concerns for everyone. She bore the responsibility for innocent and powerless Sebastian and Miracle, and while her fears were valid, they couldn’t afford to live in constant trepidation, aware that each of their careful steps echoed Dragon’s five strides.
"Dragon has the real Hera, Leo, and probably the majority of the Reapers." After a brief pause, Tiger spoke again, slowly withdrawing his hands from her shoulders, assuming an upright posture. "You’ve got us, the advantage of hiding in that body, and most importantly, yourself. Catching up to Dragon is not impossible. He’s only a few steps ahead."
A subtle smile appeared on his face as he nodded approvingly. "You led the Reapers to that height—to the pinnacle of that mountain. Now, you can push them all off the cliff," he continued, raising his fist slightly between them. "So, what do you say? Let’s go crazy?"
Hera assessed his face, unable to suppress a brief laugh. Her eyes softened as the weight in her heart lifted slightly. She took a deep breath, her tense shoulders relaxing, nodding slightly.
"Fine," she breathed out, raising her fist and bumping it against his. "Screw it. Let’s just end him since that’s the fastest way to end this nightmare."
"That’s my girl." He beamed, reaching for her head to ruffle it. His action prompted a frown from her, but he withdrew his hand before she could complain. "Anyway, I’ve got to go."
With that said, Tiger turned around and jogged away. As he did, Heaven furrowed her brows and tilted her head.
"Where are you going?!" she asked, watching him stop for a moment and look back at her.
"Going crazy!" he declared, resuming his way to his car. Without wasting a second, he started the engine and drove away. Meanwhile, Heaven remained in her spot, watching him speed away.
"Going crazy?" she murmured, shaking her head as a subtle smile graced her face. "Never mind. I should go crazy myself."
Without dwelling too much on Tiger’s plans, she turned around and headed back to the office, ready to embark on her own meaning of madness.
