Chapter 773: Back to black
Chapter 773: Back to black
[PRESENT TIME]
Heaven sat in the driver’s seat, parked in the underground parking space at the Lyon Group Building. Although she had arrived intending to delve into some substantial work, she found herself idling in the driver’s seat, hands gripped firmly on the steering wheel, gaze fixed on the expanse of the windshield.
"Hah..." she exhaled, turning her head towards the front passenger seat. Her eyes lingered on the folder resting there, and she swallowed as if the mere sight of it stirred a myriad of emotions within her.
"At this point," she whispered to herself, "I can’t discern what’s changed and what did not."
Heaven averted her gaze from the folder, lowering her head until her forehead rested on her hands atop the steering wheel. With closed eyes, she inhaled deeply, seeking to stabilize the tumult of emotions in her heart.
"A part of me couldn’t care less," she mused, pushing herself back until her back almost melded with the seat. "Yet the other half insists, "You haven’t changed even the slightest, Hera.’"
A wry laugh escaped her lips, and she shook her head before inevitably returning her focus to the folder. The slight curl of her lips faded.
"I was ready to manipulate him," she whispered, extending her body to retrieve the folder from the front passenger seat. As she straightened her back, she held the folder before her. "That damned bastard... after all he’d done, he should meet his end. He has nothing left to lose, after all."
The contents of the folder contained answers to all questions about Primo, a man known for his myriad of identities. Initially, she was disinterested in delving too deep into his background. But with her current situation, Heaven, with the assistance of Joker, had managed to unearth comprehensive information about the man. The task had become remarkably easier after Primo’s arrest, as he no longer had anyone to shield his data.
But instead of experiencing relief, remorse seized her heart, rendering her options heavier than they ought to be. Nevertheless, her desire to shield her children mirrored her determination to help a cherished friend. Moreover, now that she had confirmed the real Heaven Liu was in her own (Hera’s) body, she felt compelled to utilize every available resource at her disposal.
"Will it be you and the family?" she queried, raising her eyes to the rearview mirror, studying her reflection. "Or would it be others?"
Heaven nodded slowly, intimately familiar with the straightforward multiple-choice scenarios she used to present to herself in the past. Such questions had a way of simplifying matters for her, providing clarity and fortifying her resolve to swallow the unpleasant feelings creeping into her heart.
"That’s right, Hera," she affirmed, a wistful smile forming on her lips. "You don’t give a damn about others. As long as your children don’t know who you truly are, they’ll be fine."
Hera continued to nod, convincing herself that she was merely doing what was right. It might be considered an excuse, but given the heightened twist of her circumstances, she felt compelled to toe the line. After a moment of deep contemplation, she redirected her focus to the folder.
"I’m giving him three days," she murmured, stretching towards the front passenger seat to stow the folder in the compartment. After securing it, she recomposed herself and looked in the mirror. Giving herself an encouraging nod one last time, she stepped out of the vehicle to embark on serious work.
As Heaven pressed the key to lock the vehicle and began to stride away, she slowed down. Turning her head, she noticed a car approaching, its headlights beaming at her before parking in the aisle across from hers.
"What does he want now?" she whispered, turning around to face the car. Crossing her arms, she watched Tiger step out from the vehicle and saunter in her direction with casual confidence.
"Your perfume sucks," she remarked as he approached. "Don’t you feel suffocated?"
Tiger stopped two steps from her and leaned against the side of her vehicle. "I was driving with an open window."
"That’s reckless," she retorted, a layer of frost instantly coating her expression. "Don’t be foolish, Clark. You shoot people inside a moving car as long as there’s a tiny gap in their windows. What makes you think that won’t happen to you?"
"Geez. I’m old. If I die, so be it."
"Repeat that in your mind and speak again with an apology." Her eyes sharpened, emphasizing her words calmly. "Otherwise, I’m not wasting another breath on you."
"Tsk," Tiger clicked his tongue.
Hera, accustomed to feeling responsible for everyone, especially those she took in as a child, considered his lack of regard for his own life an insult.
"Sorry," he said half-heartedly, slipping his hand inside his suit to take out a pack of cigarettes. "I need a light."
Tiger deftly placed the cigarette between his lips, storing the rest where he got them. The flame danced on his face as he struggled to ignite the cigarette a couple of times. When he finally succeeded, he took a long drag, exhaling smoke as he tilted his head back.
"What were you pondering in there?" he inquired, shifting his gaze to the corner. "You’ve been inside the car for quite some time. I was observing."
"Just some complicated stuff." She nonchalantly shrugged, shuffling over to him. Leaning against the side of the car beside him, Heaven sighed for the umpteenth time. "I retrieved Leo’s call logs and found something."
She turned her head towards him and continued, "Heaven is in my body, and she tried to call Leo for help, putting him in such a situation." A wry smile returned as she lowered her head. "In the end, even when I know it’s not my fault, I have to take responsibility."
"Like always, huh?" Tiger maintained a straight line with his lips before offering his pack of cigarettes to her again. "Want some?"
Heaven shot him a nonchalant look, her eyes drifting to the cigarette between them. "I’m tempted, but never mind. A certain man just told me our body is our temple, so I’m going to take care of it for my children."
"Damn. Hallelujah." Tiger shrugged, tucking his pack of cigarettes back into his pocket. "So, that’s why you look like you were going to break. In the end, I was right. She ended up in your body."
"That’s not it," she confessed, smacking her lips as she pondered the right terms to explain her feelings. "It’s just that... I feel like I’m back to zero. Back to where I started and back to the same freaking hell I came from."
Tiger cast her a sidelong glance, his brow slightly arched. However, he remained silent as he continued to smoke, allowing the weighty silence to settle between them for a moment.
