Chapter 767: Bounce back
Chapter 767: Bounce back
Just as Dragon had mentioned, someone entered Leo’s room an hour later. The individual merely delivered a file for Leo to study. However, due to temporary paralysis from the neck down, he couldn’t immediately peruse its contents. Patience was required as he awaited the drug’s effects to wear off.
Sixteen hours passed—the duration it took for the drug to begin receding. Even then, Leo could barely shift on the bed. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead and back as he struggled to reach for the folder.
"Hah..." Leo exhaled upon completing the last pages of the file Dragon had sent. He let his arm drop to his side, hand hanging over the bed’s edge. Heavy-eyed, he gazed at the ceiling, reminiscing about the exhaustion he felt memorizing a script during his first leading role many years ago.
’I was this fatigued back then,’ he thought, panting. ’The only difference now is that the longer they withhold the drug injections, the heavier my body becomes.’
It seemed as though his body had become dependent on the administered drug. Leo closed his eyes, steadying his breathing. Upon reopening them, he examined the files in his other hand.
"So... everything in here is simply things she knows," he whispered, intrigued by Dragon and Hera’s true relationship.
Leo had anticipated information about Hera Cruel and her significance to Dragon. Instead, the delivered file contained a story Dragon had told Hera, aiding Leo in aligning his narrative with Dragon’s.
How did Leo know?
Dragon had thoughtfully included a note, as if teasing Leo’s curiosity.
"I’m not falling for that," he muttered, redirecting his tired gaze to the files in his hand. "I don’t care about what’s going on here. All I need is to survive."
Slowly, Leo closed his eyes as exhaustion seeped into his bones. Before he knew it, he succumbed to the embrace of darkness.

A groan escaped Leo before he could open his eyes. His blurry vision revealed a figure looking at him. After a few careful blinks, his vision sharpened.
"Good morning!" Hera greeted with a bright smile, seated beside the bed. "How was your sleep?"
Leo took a moment to process her presence. Flinching slightly, he remembered the file from the night before.
"Hmm?" Hera hummed, tilting her head as he turned his head and raised his arm. "Is something wrong?"
Relieved, Leo sighed upon realizing someone must have come in while he slept. They probably took the file with them, which explained why it was no longer in his possession. His attention shifted to his morning visitor.
"Good morning," he greeted with a coarse voice.
"You can move now," she pointed out, jerking her chin to his slightly raised hand.
Surprised, Leo moved his eyes to his hand. He stretched his fingers and tried to close them. A satisfied smile graced his face as he refocused on Hera.
"I told you," he said, relieved. "Once the drugs wear off, I’ll be fine."
"Can you move freely by then?"
"I still need another checkup for that." He shook his head, opting for a slower recovery to make this weaved of lies more believable. "If the doctor advises I can stop taking the drug, then I can probably do more than just lay down."
"Your medicines are strange," she murmured. "Were they always like that?"
"Why? Were you prescribed the same drug?"
"No. I don’t think I need to stay put since I was in a coma."
"Right..." Leo concealed his intention with a smile. "Why are you here so early?"
Hera blinked almost innocently. "It’s not early anymore, Leo. It’s almost lunchtime."
"What?"
"I was worried because you hadn’t eaten," she explained. "I brought you some food. Well, someone carried it for me, but you get the idea."
Leo glanced at the bedside table, spotting a tray of food. He smiled in satisfaction.
"Thank you," he expressed. "But I’m not hungry yet. I’ll eat after resting for a bit."
"You’re going to sleep more?"
"No. Just resting."
"Alright." Hera nodded. "Do you need me to leave?"
His brow raised as his eyes slid to the corner. "Up to you. I think you also need rest."
"I’ve already rested enough, and I think I’m recovering well and fast. I don’t feel as exhausted as usual." Her smile stretched, displaying pride in her statement. "I take it as the medicines working."
Leo maintained a friendly smile, listening. At this point, all drugs in this place seemed suspicious, whether for him or Hera. Dragon appeared to do things as he pleased, especially if convenient.
"Have you eaten?" Leo inquired, diverting the subject to a much more casual one. "You said it’s almost lunchtime. So, I assume you haven’t had lunch."
"I’ve already eaten. I eat early because I wake up early. If not, I’d miss breakfast with my husband."
"I see." He propped his elbow against the soft mattress, trying to sit up. To his surprise, Hera hopped on the edge of the bed to assist him.
She offered him a smile as she held his shoulder. Her other arm crawled around his back to hold the other.
"Let me help," she urged gently. "It seems like you’ll fall if you sit up without assistance."
"Thanks." He smiled back and nodded, holding on to her as she helped him sit up.
Leo successfully sat up for the first time since arriving, thanks to her. Heaven, on the other hand, sat down on the edge of the bed, smiling.
"You’re welcome," she replied, though delayed. "Don’t worry about it. I understand, considering I faced similar challenges when I first woke up. Initially, simple tasks were a struggle, but now I can see the progress."
Leo scrutinized her face. Their meeting the previous evening had been quite late, making it difficult to discern her features. However, in the morning light, he could observe every pore on her skin and recognize the toll her health had taken. Despite Hera’s underlying beauty, it couldn’t fully mask her compromised health.
"It’s a bit gratifying," she continued, offering a smile. "Soon, you’ll experience the same recovery!"
Leo emitted a brief hum as he nodded. "Certainly," he replied. "Having you by my side, I believe I’ll bounce back even faster."
