Chapter 765: Isn’t that right, Frank?
When Hera came into the bungalow, it was out of curiosity. She hadn’t had a proper house tour because of her condition. But this bungalow was small enough for her to explore. However, she didn’t expect to see someone living in it. Or, to be precise, admitted in here.
Dragon and Deborah didn’t mention anything like that. All they said was that this was a guest’s house. Now that she thought about it, there was this sense of urgency in Deborah’s tone when Hera started raising questions about the guest’s house.
Was it because of this man, who introduced himself as Leo?
Hera pulled a chair next to Leo’s bed, following his request. She observed the man lying still before her.
"Are you okay?" she asked, her curiosity evident. "What happened?"
Leo, with a kind smile, employed his acting prowess, honed through numerous prestigious awards. "I’m okay. Just had an accident and need to stay put."
"But you can move?"
"Yes... but not at the moment."
"Why?"
"Because I need to make a sacrifice to get better." Leo’s expression softened, a change not escaping Hera’s watchful eyes. "It’s worth it."
Her curiosity heightened. "Leo, how long have you been like this?"
"Does it matter?"
Hera’s subtle reaction to his question didn’t escape Leo’s notice, and a small smirk appeared on his face. "Just a few years ago," he continued. "I had an accident, but seeing you now, I’m glad you’re fine."
"Did you...?" Hera trailed off, holding her breath. Nervously, she clasped her hands together on her lap, her complexion turning pale.
"It’s not your fault," he said, earning her gaze. "It was an accident, Hera. No one wanted that to happen. To be fair, it was my fault. If I protected you back then, you wouldn’t end up in a vegetable state."
Hera bit her bottom lip as her heart thudded. She didn’t want to mention it moments ago, thinking her guess might be incorrect. However, now that he had uttered those statements, it gave her enough hint.
"Were you in that accident with me?" she asked.
"I was with you in that car," Leo admitted, smiling bitterly. "Your husband asked me for a favor, but something unfortunate happened."
"But that’s okay now. Seeing you getting better puts my heart at ease," he added.
"How about you?" Hera’s lips quivered, tears coating her eyes. "How can you worry about me when you’re... paralyzed?"
"Does it matter?"
"Of course, it is!" she slowly balled her hand into a tight fist. "I might’ve lost my memory, but I can still move and have a chance to live normally. But you..."
"Hera, I’m okay. My condition is not permanent," he reassured. "I would be okay if I rested more. The only reason I can’t move right now is because of a drug."
"Huh?" Hera’s raised brows furrowed. "What do you mean?"
"My doctors administer the drug so that I refrain from moving."
"Why?"
"So not to aggravate my injuries," he explained, aware of the absurdity. However, for someone like her, this would be enough. "Soon, I won’t need those drugs, and I can do things normally again."
A glint of doubt shone in her eyes, but Leo’s reassuring gaze provided a sense of security. "Is that so?"
"Yes."
"Then... when will that be?"
"I don’t know. Soon, maybe."
"How soon?"
"That’s for the doctor to decide," he deflected, changing the topic. "How have you been, Hera?"
"I’m doing better," she replied truthfully. "Leo, are you really Frank’s friend?"
"Yes."
"If so, were we friends, too?"
"We are very good friends." He smiled confidently, repeating it to make a point. "Really good friends."
"Then, can you tell me about our friendship?" Hera asked. "I lost my memory. I don’t remember myself or our relationship. Frank didn’t even mention you to me. It’s a little disheartening he didn’t mention anything about the person who faced the unfortunate accident with me."
Leo explained, "We didn’t want you to feel any guilt. What happened is an accident. Frank took care of us all these years, and I don’t want you to blame him."
"You two are precious friends to me," he continued. "I’m just glad to see you again, Hera."
Her eyes softened with appreciation. "I might’ve lost my memories, but my heart tells me I’m relieved to see you again, Leo."
As they held each other’s gazes, smiling, Leo couldn’t help but feel conflicted. Deception wasn’t his preference, but survival necessitated it. This route might be risky, but in a situation where death seemed inevitable, he had little to lose.
"So." Hera forced a smile. "Can you tell me about our friendship? How did we meet? And all sorts of things you remember about me? I want to know."
Leo pondered, drawing a deep breath. This was trickier since he knew nothing about her. Shifting his eyes, he caught Dragon standing by the door, arms crossed beneath his chest.
"Tell her, Leo," said Dragon, his drooping eyelids unable to hide the menace in them. "What was she like in the past?"
When Dragon’s voice reached Hera’s ears, she instinctively looked back. Her mouth parted, surprised to see him in here.
"Frank!" she called, clasping her hand nervously. "You came home early."
Dragon glanced down at her emotionlessly before he marched inside. "I missed you. That’s why I came home. But alas, when I went to your room, there was no one." He stopped a step from her chair, sporting a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
"As it turns out, you’re here," he continued, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Why are you here, Hera?"
"I was... curious." She cleared her throat as she smiled awkwardly. "I always see people come in and out of here. So, I was wondering what they had been doing."
Hera sighed as she looked away from Dragon to Leo. "Frank, why didn’t you tell me our friend is using this place to rest?"
"I told you." Leo forced out his words, trying to maintain his friendly demeanor under that monster’s gaze. His gulp echoed in his ear, glancing at Dragon and then at his wife. "We didn’t want to make you feel guilty about my condition."
"Isn’t that right?" he mustered the courage to look in Dragon’s direction. "Frank?"
