Chapter 738: A liar, a user, a cheater.
Heaven stayed with Leo for quite some time, trying her best to cheer him up from the traumatic incident that happened to him. He didn’t want to mention the incident, and if possible, he truly wanted to forget about it. According to him, the gunmen who assaulted his van seemed to have planned to kill everyone inside if the vehicle wasn’t bulletproof.
"Heaven."
Heaven stopped in her tracks and looked back, only to see the subtle smile on Leo’s face.
"Thank you," he expressed. "I didn’t expect you to rush in here when you heard about the accident. Also, please extend my gratitude to Mr. Zhu. If he’s helping in the case, I feel slightly reassured that there will be results sooner than I expected."
Heaven smiled. "Everyone is doing their best."
"Still, please tell him I’m grateful." His expression softened as he nodded at her. "Take care on your way home."
"I will," she said with a nod before turning on her heel.
Leo kept his eyes on her until she reached the door. She looked back at him one last time, earning a wave from him. When Heaven closed the door, the smile on Leo’s face slowly faded, and another deep exhale slipped past his lips as silence instantly settled in the ward.
"I don’t think locking myself in will help," he whispered, looking around the spacious private ward where he was admitted. "I don’t like this silence."
Before Heaven visited him, Leo always chased everyone out because he wanted nothing but silence. The only people he willingly talked to were the police and Heaven. But now, after her visit, the difference between being alone and having company was evident.
Leo quietly twisted his body, sprawling his arm toward the bedside table. He opened the drawer and picked up his phone.
"For sure, everyone is busy," he murmured, guessing that his manager and management were trying their best to appease the public. Leo hadn’t touched his phone since the incident. For sure, the news and the internet were talking about him and the incident. He didn’t want to remember it for now.
Leo quickly went to his contacts to call someone. However, as he did, he accidentally tapped his call history. Deep lines appeared between his brows as his eyes fell on the unknown number on the button on the screen. Many tried to contact him since the incident, but even so, he remembered that unknown phone number at the bottom of the screen.
"Now that I think about it, I received a strange phone call the other night," he murmured, staring at the unknown number. "Would this help with the investigation?"
If he remembered correctly, someone called him the other night, asking him for help. However, the caller suddenly went quiet, and the line got disconnected. He didn’t think about it until now, but seeing it again, there was this strange, inexplicable sensation creeping into his heart.
"I should’ve told her about it," he whispered as he looked at the door once again.
*******
When Heaven closed the door behind her, a deep exhale slipped past her lips. She looked back at the door, feeling a little sorry for what happened to Leo. A part of her believed this had nothing to do with her and Dragon. After all, there was nothing Dragon would want from that man. But the other part of her told her there was a possibility the man behind this incident was Dragon.
"I don’t want to think about it," she murmured, shaking her head as she peeled her gaze from the door. "Between the two possibilities, it’s more plausible this is an isolated case."
Heaven tossed the thought to the back of her mind. It was hard to believe Dragon would waste his time with Leo, who had no connections with the underground and was also someone this nation adored. Considering Leo was a naturally kind person, he couldn’t offend someone like Dragon.
Not to mention, if Dragon was truly the culprit because he had tons of time to waste and he found out she introduced herself as Pepsi, he would’ve targeted Dominic instead. After all, Heaven and Leo hadn’t been in touch. Moreover, instead of trying to kill Leo, it was more logical for Dragon to abduct her husband to lure her.
What a headache.
As Heaven sauntered through the hallway, she fished her phone out of the pocket of her jeans. She dialed a number and rang Joker, gazing ahead. On her way, she caught two nurses wheeling an empty bed. She stepped aside, giving way to the medical staff.
"Tsk." She clicked her tongue as the call didn’t push through. It rang a few times, but no one was answering. Even so, she exercised patience, knowing Joker was still blaming her for his heartache. Thus, she called him again, stopping in front of the lift.
"Just how long will he keep being angry?" she whispered, snapping her eyes at the elevator door as it opened. Heaven stepped inside the lift and was about to end the call when Joker picked up.
"What?" Annoyance laced Joker’s voice, making Heaven shake her head as she pressed the button. "What do you want now? Don’t tell me you just called because you need me?"
"I’m inside the lift," she said. "I might lose reception in a bit."
"Are you trying to avoid this topic again?" Joker rolled his eyes irritably. "Don’t worry. I already accepted that you’re a liar, a user, a cheater, and a heartless human being! There’s no point in crying and wasting my tears for you!"
"Good for you," Heaven smirked. "Anyway —"
"Is that all you’re going to say?" he scoffed, cutting her off.
Heaven sighed as she clicked her tongue faintly. "If you’re expecting me to cry just because you called me a liar, a cheater, a user, and a heartless human being, then you’ll have to wait for a million years to see a tear in my eyes. I find them as compliments. Thank you."
"Damn it! You’re so shameless!" Joker hissed. "My love for you is slowly turning into hate. I’m not joking!"
"Fine, I believe you." She shook her head once again, glancing at the numbers above the elevator. "Anyway, have you found out who attacked Leo Wu?"
"Who said I even tried to look for it?" Joker smugly smirked, only to furrow his brows as the line suddenly disconnected. He slowly pulled his phone away, gasping in disbelief. "Did she hang up on me again?"
He frowned deeply. "Tch! I’m joking, alright!? I’m sorry — I didn’t mean everything I said to you — I don’t hate you! I looked when you said to investigate that shooting incident!" Joker tried calling Heaven once more in a hurry but to no avail. Heaven seemed to have lost reception, and he had to wait until she called him back again.
What a life!
