Heaven couldn’t help but laugh as she drew the phone away. She lost reception as the elevator descended to the first floor, but she didn’t mind the slight delay. Knowing Joker was playing hard to get, which he would surely fail, the brief break in their conversation would set him straight.

"Until when will he blame me for that one-sided promise?" she murmured, shaking her head as she recalled the time Joker made a promise to her.

"So?" She spoke the second the call connected, even before the first ring ended. "Do you have any leads on who attacked Leo Wu?"

Joker snapped his tongue in irritation, glaring daggers at the monitor before him. This time, he answered the call through his computer so he could work and talk properly.

"You are exploiting my feelings for you, are you?" he hissed.

"I am a user, but also a liar. So, no, I’m not exploiting your feelings."

He clicked his tongue as a response to her sarcasm while he ran his fingers through the keyboard. "Yes, I have a lead. Your husband kept bugging me yesterday, telling me he will give me back my research — ahem!"

Joker bit his tongue to stop himself from running his mouth. "Anyway, I did look into it and asked for Wolf’s assistance. I tracked the individuals riding in tandem before the shooting, and it led me to a discovery. This guy named Leo Wu has been followed for quite some time now."

"What?" Heaven stopped in the middle of the hospital’s lobby.

"It’ll get worse," Joker continued. "This isn’t the first time they tried to do anything to him. The first time those guys appeared following him, they already tried to get him. Although it doesn’t seem like they planned to kill him, but rather abduct him. I have to admit, the guy’s luck is divine. His luck forced those people to resort to such a bold move."

Deep lines appeared between her brows as she breathed out. "Who wants to get him?"

"I don’t know. The job is clean. After that shooting, those guys got into an accident. One dead, one critical. Your husband is already with them." Joker shrugged. "By the way, I sent you the clips. Check them."

Heaven instantly pulled the phone from her ear to check the files Joker sent her. Some of the clips were longer, but she simply skipped to the important parts. She held her breath as her heart suddenly thudded against her chest, putting the phone back to her ear.

"You don’t know the person behind it?" she asked under her breath. There was a moment of silence on the line before Joker answered.

"Yes, I don’t," Joker said. "But if I can’t trace the person behind this incident, it only narrows down the people who could do this. There are only a few people I know who can erase their tracks at will, and you’re one of them. I’m pretty sure you are fully aware of this list, but after five years, some of the names have disappeared from this world, replaced with new ones. Dragon is one of them, boss."

The corner of Heaven’s eyes sharpened as her jaw tightened. She already expected Dragon was way far from where he stood in the underground back then. Six years without Hera in the picture was enough for Dragon to covet her position and stabilize his foundation in the underground. However, hearing it from Joker in a roundabout way still left an unpleasant taste in her mouth.

"Find out what he wants," Heaven ordered as she took a step forward, only to stop. "Fly your drones to my location. I think they’re going to get him this time."

Without explaining herself, Heaven turned around and ran as fast as she could. She pressed the elevator button impatiently, grinding her teeth. On her way out, she met two nurses going in the direction from which she came. The nurses were wearing face masks and not making eye contact with her. Now that she thought about it, Heaven glimpsed at the small tattoo peeking out from the nurse’s collar.

"God," she breathed out as she rushed inside the lift, pressing the buttons multiple times as if that would make the elevator move more quickly. She tapped her foot on the floor impatiently, staring at the lights above the door.

"Please let me be wrong," she mumbled, praying from the bottom of her heart that she was wrong and was simply overthinking things. But the major part of her brain and heart told her she was right. They reminded her how many times her hunches and instincts had saved her as Hera, and how many times she had almost lost her life, ignoring those hunches in the past.

When the elevator produced a loud ’ding!’ Heaven forced it open. She jumped outside even before it completely parted, sprinting toward the private ward where Leo was. The closer she got, the louder the thuds of her heart echoed.

"Please be inside..." she breathed out as she sprawled her hand toward the knob, twisting it without a second’s hesitation. She abruptly pushed the door open, standing by the door while panting for air. Her pupils slowly dilated as she searched the room. But alas, the only thing she saw was an empty bed and its creased sheet.

"Hell."
