Chapter 737: The incident

The news about the incident involving Leo Wu spread quickly like wildfire. Every news outlet covered the story, eager to secure an exclusive account of what had truly transpired. In the online world, all they talked about was the incident, crafting their own conclusions and theories.

When Heaven heard about it, she couldn’t help but read a few articles and watch the news. At that moment, there were no official statements from Leo Wu. However, his management had already released a statement to reassure the public that Leo was safe.

Still, many questions lingered in everyone’s minds: Why was he attacked? Did he have enemies? Was he involved with dangerous people? And many more. Heaven couldn’t deny that she had the same questions on her mind. But more than that, she wondered:

Was he attacked because of her? But why him?

Dragon was the only person Heaven could think of who would do this to a public figure. If it was him, why did he attack Leo Wu and not Dominic? Or her in-laws? These questions invading her mind compelled her to rush and visit Leo the very next day when she heard the news.

"Thank you for seeing me," Heaven said as she sat down beside the bed where Leo was. "Your manager told me that you aren’t allowing anyone to see you. It made me worried. How are you?"

Leo let out a series of chuckles as he replied, "Everyone wants to know what happened, not how I was. As you can see, I’m okay. Thank you for asking. It’s been a while since I last saw you."

"I can’t say the same since I see your billboards everywhere," she joked, making him laugh softly. "I’m glad to know you’re doing fine."

"Me too," Leo said, nodding. "Though I’m a little traumatized by what happened."

"That’s normal," Heaven said with a subtle smile, while he leaned back comfortably. "What’s important is that you’re..."

"Alive?" he guessed, earning a short smile from her. "Me too, Heaven. I’m relieved, but at the same time, scared and confused."

Leo slowly looked away from her and sighed. "I was on my way to a photo shoot. It was like any normal day for me, thinking that after that shoot, I’d be heading straight to an interview and then sign a contract with an international brand as its ambassador."

"I didn’t know what happened, Heaven. All I knew was that while we were on the highway, all these sounds rang in my ears." He closed his eyes before he turned his head to face her. "The next thing I knew, I was covering my head while my van screeched."

Leo shared the general idea of what happened to him that day. He was grateful that his van only crashed into the pole placed in the middle of the highway, and his van was bulletproof. If not for those things, Leo was certain he would’ve died during the assault.

Although his injuries were thankfully mild, this incident traumatized him. Right now, Leo didn’t want to see anyone or go out, knowing he would have to talk about it repeatedly. But since Heaven was a dear friend to him, he felt safe speaking his mind.

"I don’t have any idea who could do this to me," he said and sighed deeply once more. "I’m not perfect, but as far as I know, I haven’t done anything that would earn someone’s wrath to the point they would want to kill me. I’ve done my best to be a good person and a role model, but... I don’t know, Heaven."

Heaven pressed her lips into a thin line, unsure of how to console him. She understood that everything she would say wouldn’t give him comfort. After all, even she couldn’t understand why he was attacked. Her suspicion that it had something to do with her and Dragon grew firmer, but then again, she couldn’t understand why Dragon would target Leo.

Was it because Leo and Heaven had a history together? But Dragon wasn’t so stupid as to think that targeting Leo was as effective as targeting Dominic. Dominic was the perfect bait to lure her, after all.

"I don’t know what to say," Heaven confessed as she rose from her seat, only to sit down on the edge of the bed. "But what I can say with certainty is that I’m glad you survived."

Leo’s eyes softened. "Me too," he whispered. "At the end of the day, I might be confused about why a riding in tandem assaulted the car I was in, but I’m grateful I’m still alive and in one piece."

"Dom told me he’s helping in the investigation," she nodded at him reassuringly. "Once we catch the culprit, we’ll let you know. That’s what he said."

"Thank you, Heaven." He smiled subtly. "That feels reassuring."

"He also said if you need security, tell him."

"He’ll give me security?"

"No. He’ll give you a discount if you hire his men."

A loud chuckle slipped past his mouth at her answer. "He’s a natural businessman. Even when he’s running for a position, it seems he can’t help it."

"He has a family to feed," Heaven shrugged, pleased that she was able to make him laugh at this challenging time for her dear friend. "Anyway, are you sure you have no recent enemies?"

"I don’t fight, Heaven, you know that," he remarked, giving her a knowing look. "In most cases, I just stay away from people I don’t like."

"I’m aware. I’m just asking because you might remember something that will help the authorities hasten their investigations."

"Unfortunately, I don’t think I can help with that." Leo shook his head and sighed. "All I know is that I was attacked — almost got killed and I don’t know why it happened. Or why did I deserve it?"

"I see." Heaven pressed her lips into a thin line as she nodded in understanding. "Well, I guess we could only trust the authorities to catch those guys."

"Mhm. I hope they do." He sighed for the umpteenth time. "Because if they don’t, I don’t think I can still go out without thinking it might happen again."

Heaven reached for his hand and squeezed it. She smiled when he lifted his gaze to her, giving him the most reassuring smile she could offer him.
