Chapter 736: Mourn for him
Chapter 736: Mourn for him
"I think Ram is in danger."
A moment of silence followed Dominic’s remarks as Heaven furrowed her brows. She slowly put down the glass of whiskey, her eyes still on him.
"Why do you say so?" she asked, only to see him shrug.
"I’m not sure about it, but Wolf called me today. He was asking me about Ram, telling me he hadn’t heard from him for quite some time," Dominic explained coolly. "I haven’t heard from Ram as well. He was supposed to attend the anniversary, but then told me something came up. That’s the last time I heard from him."
"And you’re guessing he’s in danger because he’s now missing in action? Darling, Ram is quite busy. He’s the president of a country."
"I know, but considering Dragon is in the picture, it’s not impossible. You said it yourself. Your formidable enemies in the past didn’t target you first. They chose the patient fight, targeting your limbs to incapacitate you," he explained in a knowing tone. "Even though Ram is a president and his security is tight, I think you, of all people, should know Dragon isn’t to be underestimated."
Dominic took a momentary pause as he lowered his head while lifting his eyes. "If you are Dragon, don’t you think taking down a president of a country and taking control over that country is quite tempting?"
Another moment of silence weighed on their shoulders as the two stared at each other. Her lips parted as she sighed, taking the glass of whiskey and drinking it in one go.
"Hah!" Heaven slammed the bottom of the glass on the table. "He won’t kill him."
"Why? Because you were once former comrades?" Dominic arched a brow as he guided the glass of whiskey to his lips. "You picked him up from the mud, Hera. And yet, he killed you — possibly faked your death or exhumed your body to preserve it because of a twisted and sickening reason."
Heaven ran her tongue across her inner cheek, watching her husband take a sip. "I know that, but Dragon won’t just kill people. He’s not the type. If he still sees a person’s value, he’ll keep that person alive until they are no longer useful. That’s why I’m saying even if he abducted Ram or kept him captive, he wouldn’t kill him just yet. Ram is the president of the country, and do you know why I placed him in that country?"
"Because the neighboring country, or rather, it borders a lawless land where no government governs it?" Dominic guessed, already aware of the geographical conflict in each country. Even if he didn’t run for any government position, he was already knowledgeable about it.
"Exactly." Hera nodded. "It won’t be a surprise if Dragon had his eyes on this lawless land to conduct his operations."
"I thought that land is where you used to operate?"
"Nope." Heaven shook her head. "I was interested in it not because it’s lawless, but rather because many of my enemies took an interest in that land. They all wanted to rule it."
"So... are you saying you’re going to do nothing?" Dominic poured himself another glass and then filled her glass as well. "Aren’t you worried about Ram?"
"My agreement with Ram is that I won’t meddle with his business. All he needs to do is give me regular updates on the lawless land." She leaned forward to grab the glass and casually mentioned her willingness to protect his country from gangs and mafias. "Other than that, we’re on our own."
"Are you abandoning him?"
"No." Heaven snapped her eyes up. "All I’m saying is that Ram will manage, Dom. Dragon isn’t the first enemy who targeted him, and this isn’t the first time our lives were put on the line. It’s already a part of our lives, which we all accepted long ago."
"What if he dies?"
"I’ll mourn for him." Her rigid expression remained, unfazed at the thought one of her men might die. Or worse, already dead. "Until I see news of his death and receive confirmation from Wolf, then I’ll keep hoping he’s alive wherever he is."
She slowly cast her eyes down with her lips drawn into a thin line. "I can no longer jump into the hellfire with my head first, Dom." A bitter smile appeared on her face, contrasting the layer of frost coating her eyes.
"Especially not in Heaven’s body and Heaven Liu’s name that was on Miracle and Sebastian’s birth certificate," she added. "This might change your perspective of me, but I don’t mind losing a man or two or all of them if that means Miracle and Basti will live. Selfish? I never claimed I wasn’t. This is the way I am, this is the way I survived, and this is the life I don’t want my children to inherit."
"That’s why I can simply and sincerely hope Ram can survive this catastrophe that might have befallen him," she added quietly but sternly. "Though I have confidence in him, I still have my worries, and I’m not going to run right now and rescue him. I’m sure Ram doesn’t expect anyone to rescue him as well."
Heaven paused once again as she drew a deep breath. "Your thoughts? Are you having some sort of realization about just who your wife is?"
"I wished." Dominic shrugged. "I simply asked out of plain curiosity, and also, I want you to know about it. Other than that, I think you underestimate me, my love. After knowing who you are and getting a grasp of the power you used to have, I’d be damned if I expect you to simply run your mouth heedlessly and take action without thinking about it over a hundred times."
A subtle smile turned up on his face as he lifted the glass mildly. "Then it’s good that I didn’t send people to look for him."
"You want to look for Ram?"
"The general allowed me to borrow his men." He shrugged. "But I didn’t tell them the reason, though they were prepared and were simply waiting for my go signal. I haven’t given the order because I want to tell you first."
"Goodness." Heaven shook her head as she chuckled. "Tell them to pull out. Sending reinforcements right now might just backfire."
"That’s why I haven’t given them the order." His smile stretched. "Who knows? Ram might turn out to be a traitor as well. And your enemies might just trace me, which would lead them to you just because I wanted to help and impress my wife. I don’t trust your men aside from the people who were around, after all."
"How about Wolf?"
"After interacting with him, I’m sure he hasn’t turned his back on you," Dominic reassured. "But Ram... I’m not very sure."
"We’ll find out in the future." Heaven smiled, lifting the glass of whiskey. "For now, everyone is on their own."
"Mhm." Dominic raised the glass and chugged a mouthful. After he swallowed the alcohol, he snapped his attention back to her. "By the way, have you heard the news?"
"Mhm?" Heaven hummed as she licked her lips, leaning back comfortably. "What news? If it’s about Tiger’s, then I’d say the man just wanted a bloodbath. Not that I care, since people would be too busy killing each other for him. Yay for me."
"I don’t know about that one." Dominic furrowed his brows. "What I’m talking about is the news about Leo Wu."
"Huh? What about him?"
"He was attacked on his way to a photo shoot."
"What did you say?" Heaven gasped in surprise. "Leo was attacked?"
