Chapter 729: He knew.

On the day of Hera’s death, most reapers gathered in the private facility where Hera was admitted. Deborah could remember how dangerous the atmosphere in the facility was at that time. The Reapers took up the entire floor; some were weeping quietly, while others were throwing huge fits.

Deborah remembered a few of them threatening the doctors. But alas, in the end, none of them could change their boss’s mind.

Hera Cruel decided to die through a mercy kill. She didn’t want to stay longer, thinking she had already settled everything. She disbanded the Reapers and got rid of any authorities from her people’s backs. For Hera, not being a burden to her people was the right thing to do.

But for Deborah, that was the stupidest thing she had done. This decision led to Dragon exploiting Hera’s vulnerability and resulted in June’s death.

Standing in the morgue, Deborah darted her eyes between the women lying motionless on the steel bed. They had the same face, though June didn’t look as sickly as Hera.

’This...’Deborah could feel her heart thud against her chest. A thin layer of tears coated her eyes as the veins in her sclera turned red. ’This is his plan all along?’

"Deb..."

Deborah’s breath hitched as she heard June’s weak voice. She furrowed her brows, seeing June trying her best to lift her hand.

"June," she whispered as she rushed to June’s side to hold her hand.

"Cold," was the only thing June said with the remaining strength she had.

Deborah held her breath as she watched June’s eyes slowly close. June’s hand that was in between Deborah’s lost its strength. For a moment, Deborah stood frozen on the spot.

"June," she called as she placed her finger on June’s pulse. It stopped pulsating. Her face crumpled as she squeezed her hand, feeling sorry for June, who was a dear friend to her.

June could’ve lived if she had listened to Deborah last night. However, when June woke up from her weakened state, she wished to die. Perhaps she realized there was nothing worth living for. Dragon was the man she dedicated her heart to, the man she promised to spend the rest of her days with, even if she had to live with a new face.

But now, she knew that the man she called her husband had been lying to her all this time.

Dragon didn’t love her. He only acted the way he did because he had a different goal to achieve.

Suddenly, a series of coughs pierced the silence in the morgue. Deborah slowly turned her head, and her eyes landed on Hera. Blood came out from the corner of Hera’s lips, but that was because of the antidote she was injected with.

Everyone knew she was killed through a mercy kill. But that wasn’t the case. The doctors attending to Hera injected her with an antidote to the constant poisoning they had kept prescribing her. And that blood was proof that she was throwing up the poison in her system.

"We’re all crazy here, I guess," Deborah whispered as she looked around the morgue. "I wonder what his reaction would be if he realized Hera died and all his efforts went down the drain."

Deborah searched the morgue for anything useful. She couldn’t just stab Hera and kill her that way. Dragon would find out. Knowing the chemicals in Hera’s system, Deborah looked for a drug to gradually harm her by triggering those ingredients.

In no time, Deborah stopped as she held a small bottle in her hand. The corner of her lips curled up into a wicked smirk, and she took out a syringe to transfer the drug from the bottle. She then trudged back to where Hera was lying.

Hera was still coughing out blood; she was alive and not on the brink of death.

"I’m sorry," Deborah whispered as she lifted the syringe. "I don’t hate you, but your death will surely piss him off. Too bad your beloved Reapers won’t be the ones to bury you, but that psycho."

After saying her piece, Deborah stabbed Hera’s thigh with the syringe. She slowly placed her thumb on the end of the syringe, injecting Hera with another drug that could be lethal and cause her slow death. When she finished, Deborah pulled the syringe away and looked at Hera coldly.

"This is for June, Dragon."

The Reapers mourned their boss’s death. But alas, none of them figured the woman they held and wept for was another person. Perhaps it was because they knew Hera was dead, and thus, they didn’t exert extra effort to know if the corpse was actually their boss. All they did was mourn for her, going through the proceedings without fail.

Dragon, on the other hand, didn’t celebrate as he expected. Instead, he rushed Hera to the emergency room as the woman convulsed. Hera almost died that day. If she hadn’t been rushed to the emergency room. Although she made it through the crisis, the mixture of poisons and drugs had been in her system for a while. The advancement of technology only saved her from dying, but it didn’t save her from falling into a coma and becoming a vegetable.

The doctors said it was probably because Hera had been digesting other medicines to keep herself more active during her last days. They had a few guesses, but none of them knew the real cause. Thus, Dragon spent the following years trying to keep her alive without knowing the person behind Hera’s situation was right beside him all along.

[PRESENT TIME]

Deborah closed her eyes ever so slowly as she remembered that time in the past. When she reopened them, she cast Dragon a side-eye.

’Obviously, he’s lucky,’she thought as she set her eyes on the glass once more. ’Who would have thought she’d wake up after a long time? Surely, she’s a fighter.’

"I’m going," she announced, waving dismissively as she walked away. "This is painful to watch."

"Deborah, be careful."

Deborah slowed down as she looked back. "Is that a threat, Dragon?"

"Who knows?" he shrugged nonchalantly. "If you did something bad, perhaps it is."

"I’m innocent then," she smirked before resuming her steps. When she looked away, a glint flickered across her eyes.

He knew.
