Chapter 723: Why are you so smart?
"Remember when I said my sister died? It turns out she’s actually alive."
The atmosphere in the room grew tense as Tiger’s revelation about his sister being alive left Ivy shocked. She put down her plastic spork, her appetite suddenly gone, and focused all her attention on him.
"Your sister is alive?" Ivy asked, her voice quivering with surprise and confusion. "But you told me she died... like five or six years ago."
Tiger nodded solemnly. "Yes, I did. I believed she was dead for years, but I recently found out that she’s alive. It’s a long and complicated story."
Ivy’s mind raced as she tried to process this new information. "How did you find out she’s alive?"
Tiger hesitated for a moment before he began to explain. "She appeared in front of me. She looked different from what I can remember, but she provided evidence that left no room for doubt."
Ivy’s concern for her own situation momentarily took a backseat as she listened to Tiger’s story. She could see the turmoil in his eyes and the weight of this revelation on his shoulders.
"I’m so sorry to hear that," Ivy said, genuine sympathy in her voice. "That must be incredibly challenging to deal with. Is there anything I can do to help or support you through this?"
Tiger appreciated her concern but shook his head. "Right now, I just need to figure things out. I wanted to share this with you because I didn’t want you to think I had been lying to you."
Ivy nodded, understanding his need for honesty. "I appreciate you telling me the truth. If you ever need to talk or if there’s anything I can do, please don’t hesitate to reach out."
Tiger managed a small smile. "Thank you, Ivy. Your understanding means a lot."
With the weight of this unexpected revelation hanging in the air, Ivy and Tiger returned to their meal in silence, their thoughts consumed by the newfound complications in their lives.
"It’s good for me, but I can’t say the same for you." After some time, Tiger’s voice pierced the heavy air in the room. His remarks made her look back at him with furrowed brows.
"Huh?"
Tiger snapped his eyes ever so slowly. "My world used to revolve around my sister, Ivy Wei. If she asks for my arm, I’ll give it to her without questions asked. If she asks me to kill myself, I will do so without a second hesitation."
"What..." Ivy trailed off a little. "I don’t know where this is going, Tiger... I mean, Clark."
"I’m saying since she’s alive, I can’t prioritize you or us." His answer was quick and resolute. "I can’t afford to lose her again, is what I’m saying. That is why, don’t wait for me or like me. Don’t even think of seeing me."
Ivy opened and closed her mouth, but her voice wouldn’t come out of her throat. All she could do for a moment was stare at him, unsure of what to feel about this.
"You’re... seriously saying this after all of that?" she forced out a breath, laughing in mockery for a second. "Don’t worry, Clark. I... am not expecting anything from you. Matter of fact, I don’t want to take this to a different level. We had sex, and that’s it. I meant it when I said last night wasn’t the start of anything."
"I have a bounty on my head." Tiger stopped her mid-sentence, earning a strange look from her. "That’s why I’m telling you to stay away from me indefinitely. Because if you linger around me more, you might find yourself at the gates of hell."
Her brows creased deeply, looking at him strangely. Ivy processed his remarks and even though they were easier to understand, she felt like she couldn’t grasp the information properly.
"I don’t think I follow," she blurted out under her breath. "Tiger, what’s going on?"
"Tch." Tiger ruffled his hair in irritation. But this irritation was more on the fact his hands were tied at the moment. "Listen to me, Ivy."
He placed the paper bowl on the bedside table before sitting on the edge of the bed. He looked at her deep in the eye, taking her hand gently.
"I’m taking the getting-to-know stage. If not for the current things at hand, I’ll woo you, for sure. You can love yourself while we’re dating," he started, setting that matter straight. "But there’s a bounty on my head. More specifically, a bounty from the underground. That is why I was suspended, and that is why I can’t date anyone at the moment. In case you didn’t know, people will come after you to get me."
He took a deliberate pause as he shook his head. "I’m not taking risks, and I’m not going to play with your life, Miss Wei. I’ll snap if something terrible happens to you because of me."
Ivy held her breath, unable to look away from the pair of sincere eyes mirroring her. "Someone... wants you dead?" she whispered, only to see him shrug.
"Even without the bounty, people want me dead. I’m probably the second on their hit list."
"Second? Who’s the first one?"
"My sister."
"Your sister?" she gasped in disbelief. "Tiger, don’t tell me your sister is involved with bad people? And because she’s your sister, you are being dragged into her mess?"
Tiger glanced up for a moment and thought about it. Well, Ivy wasn’t wrong. Tiger wouldn’t be in this line of business if not for Hera. He would have died long ago if she hadn’t rescued him from the butcher’s house.
"What kind of sister drags her family into such a mess? What a selfish human being." Ivy continued, having this bad impression of Tiger’s sister. Her eyes glinted with fury, squeezing his hand mildly. "I can’t believe that I’m unhappy she’s alive. If she returned just to cause more trouble for people, I’m sorry to say this, but she was better off dead."
"Come on, sweetheart. My sister isn’t like that." Tiger couldn’t help but chuckle, wondering what would be Heaven’s reaction if she heard about Ivy’s impression of her. "She wants to dismiss me. Last night, she told me she wanted me to leave her alone. She cares for you and me. For us."
"What?"
"But I can’t, Ivy. I can’t just leave her. She’s my sister and I lost her once. I can’t lose her again because I know if I do, her next funeral will be the real thing." Another deep exhale slipped past his lips. "That’s why I came here last night. But last night went the other way."
Another moment of silence descended on the room. She kept her eyes on him while he looked down, sighing. When her eyes fell on her hand, his hand was still holding it gently.
"Do you regret it, though?" she asked, lifting her head once more. "Did you regret what happened last night?"
"No." His answer was quick. "If there’s anything I regret, that would be not settling the matters in the past which are holding me back even at this second."
Her eyes softened after studying his eyes, getting a guarantee he was telling the truth. "How much is the bounty on your head?"
"Why?"
"Can’t we just put on another request to protect you?"
"Oh, I didn’t think of that." Tiger nodded. "It’s twenty billion. Moose wants to kill me when he hears of the price."
"Twenty, what?"
"Twenty-five billion, to be exact. Dollars, of course." He grinned happily. "I should double it."
"..."
"Why are you so smart?" Tiger moved his face forward until the tip of his nose was against hers. He brushed his nose with hers and planted a quick kiss on her lips. "Great thinking! Wait. Let me settle that!"
Tiger jumped from his spot and hurriedly looked for his phone. Meanwhile, Ivy looked at him blankly.
’Did he say he would double his bounty? How?’ she wondered while Tiger was making a call. ’Even I couldn’t top off that twenty-five billion in his head since my total network hadn’t even reached billions in that currency.’
