Chapter 697: It’s not love

[PRESENT TIME]

Heaven stood on the balcony with a glass of wine in her hand. She hid her body in a night robe, staring at the garden from her vantage point. The soft breeze of the night brushed her cheeks, making the stray hair from her updo sway.

"I’m home."

The corner of her mouth curled up as she glanced over her shoulder. Dominic slowly slipped his hands around her body, hugging her from behind. He planted a kiss on her cheek before resting his head on her shoulder.

"You came home a little later than usual," she pointed out, and he smiled.

"Am I in for a long explanation?" he humored, earning a chuckle from her.

"No need. I know campaign periods can be a little overwhelming."

"Oh?" Dominic’s brows rose. "Speaking from experience?"

"I never ran for any government position. Too busy for that. But according to the people I know, they’d rather go on a different mission than go through it again."

"And yet, they didn’t retire after just one term," he humored once again, making her laugh.

"That’s right. They’re quite fickle and hypocrites." She shook her head while he pulled her body close to him slightly.

"So, what is my wife doing in here with a half-empty bottle of wine?" he asked, changing the subject smoothly. "Is everything okay in the art department?"

"Mhm. I settled some ridiculous rumors." Heaven drew a deep breath as she set her eyes back on the garden. "It’s just that some memories of the past kept invading my mind, and I thought a glass of wine could fix it."

"Did it fix it?"

"Sadly, it didn’t."

Dominic stared at her side profile for a moment before he spoke again. "Perhaps a pair of ears can help?"

Heaven slowly looked back at him and smiled subtly. A shallow breath slipped past her lips as she looked ahead, resting her head against his.

"It’s Frank," she confessed. "It’s my fault."

She paused for a moment, even though what she said wasn’t enough to relay everything that had been on her mind. "I’ve always known he was quite... possessive. As children, I didn’t think much about it. I started sensing that nature of him when we were in our teens."

"He disliked it whenever I was looking in a direction that wasn’t his. But since he and Tiger get along well, I simply shrugged it off. Even when I assumed my mother’s position and made a name for myself, I felt like I’ve always turned a blind eye to everything he does," she continued in a low voice. "Even when I knew he would betray me, I kept deluding myself that he wouldn’t do that to me."

"I’ve always known betrayal is already a part of our lives. My mother died because one of our people betrayed her, sold her to her enemies, and even had the nerve to conceal himself by using the word ’family.’ It’s just that... I didn’t think Dragon, of all people, would do that to me," she added, letting out a weak and mocking laugh. "He’s my favorite, after all. That’s why he is the Dragon."

Dominic remained quiet as he observed his wife. He believed her, and even though it was an unpleasant sight to see her eyes with such emotions while talking about another man, he understood what her family meant to her. It was the very reason he added more rooms and some separate quarters so her so-called family would still be around her.

"If it’s true that he faked my death and preserved my body..." Heaven trailed off as she pressed her lips, turning her head to look at her husband. "He will kill you, Dom. And knowing him, he’ll make sure I can witness how he’d do it."

"I know he would," he replied quietly. "For him to kill you and preserve you only means he loves you so much."

Another short and weak laugh escaped her lips. "No," she shook her head. "He doesn’t love me."

"That’s strange." Dominic furrowed his brows. "What do you mean, he doesn’t love you? He did all of that for you or, to be precise, for himself. He wanted you, and if that isn’t called twisted love, I am confused."

"Dragon isn’t like that, Dom. He is much more complicated than you think he is." Heaven smacked her lips and hummed, pondering the right words and explanation to simplify it. "Silas did what he did because he loved his mother and sought revenge. On the other hand, No One was simply sick in the head who likes stealing people’s identity and living it as some sort of finding his purpose in life."

"Dragon was neither someone who sought revenge nor was he as twisted as No One. Whether he is better or worse is something I’m unsure of, but he’s incapable of love," she continued with a faint huff. "He doesn’t do love, and he never loved me. He wants to claim ownership. It doesn’t matter if I see him as a friend, a family, or a lover. As long as my world revolves around him, nothing else would matter. That’s not love."

Heaven slowly turned around to face him, resting her arms over his shoulder. "Love shouldn’t hurt intentionally." Her eyes softened as she held her husband’s gaze. "Back then, I also thought he just loved me, but now... I disagree."

"Love is something you feel at peace the most. It’s something that shouldn’t bring any confusion whatsoever," she added under her breath, caressing his lean cheek with the back of her fingers. "The willingness to let go, even if it means hurting yourself, is also love. But Dragon isn’t like that. He would never let me go, even after death, and he would never respect my wishes. He would go so far as to fake my death, not because my death would devastate him, but because he’d regret not achieving something."

A bitter smile turned up on her face. "Yet somehow, it hurts because I would’ve never hurt him the way he hurts me."

Dominic quietly pulled her into his embrace. He patted her back while he rested his other hand on the back of her head. He didn’t say a word and simply embraced her, comforting her with his presence. He was always aware Dragon was a big deal for everyone, but only tonight did he truly realize this was more than personal.

The Reapers hated Dragon, not because he killed Hera. They hated him with deep passion because she would never hurt or disrespect them like what Dragon did to her.
