Chapter 696: Early signs
[FLASHBACK]
"Hmm... hmm... mmm."
The young boy stopped mixing the fluids on the table and turned his head. His little eyes landed on the young girl with pigtails on the side. Her little arms were resting on the edge of the table, and her chin was on top of her arms. She was watching him do some science experiments but kept humming loudly, so he had to stop.
"Hera, what is it?" asked the young boy curiously. "Am I doing it incorrectly?"
The young Hera snapped her eyes up to him and said, "You’re a weirdo."
"Huh?"
"Frank, how can you ditch me and Princess to do this?" she asked with a pout. "If you want to play with water, we have a large pool in the house. I can ask Bear to change the watercolor. He can make it a rainbow swimming pool if you want."
The young Frank blinked lazily. "This is not water."
"Then what is it?"
"Alcohol."
"Ohh..." Her lips formed an ’O’ shape as she nodded.
"If you want to play with Princess, go and play with her." He peeled his naturally lazy eyes from her as he refocused his attention on his science experiment. Meanwhile, Hera pouted and crossed her arms.
"Seriously, what’s wrong?" she asked, eyes squinting. "You’ve been acting differently for days now. Tell me. Are you planning to run away from here?"
Frank didn’t answer, making her frown.
"If you don’t answer, I’ll get that baseball bat over there and break this desk!" she pointed at the table as she warned. "I don’t like it when Frank keeps things from his big sister! Tell me. Did anyone bully you?"
"If there’s someone who bullies me and always exercises her power, that’s you." He looked back at her and sighed. Frank put down the glasses in his hand, facing her squarely. If she warned him, he was certain she would do it.
"Why are you even here?" he asked as his lazy eyes slowly turned sharp. "If you want to play with Princess, then go play with her. Stop bothering me with your nonsense."
The second his voice raised a little, Hera drew her head back in surprise. Her eyes widened a little, shocked to see him get angry for the first time. Frank was the new addition to her family and he had only been in the mansion for half a year. They met during Vicenzo’s ’expedition’ on a small island where they stayed for a little over two months.
Back when they were still in the town where Frank originally came from, Hera and Frank were inseparable. Since Hera and her parents stayed in that place for two months, they also grew fond of this genius young boy hidden in a faraway land. They took him in since Frank was an orphan, and the only family he had was his auntie, who treated him less of an animal.
Everything was going well until some time ago when Frank started to distance himself from her. It confused her. She couldn’t remember fighting with him or being mean to him. It was as if a switch was flipped in him, and he just became aloof.
Now, he was even shouting at her.
"What did I do?" she asked with a frown. "Why are you shouting at me?"
Frank, as if he realized what he just said, froze for a moment. "I’m... I’m sorry," he whispered and sighed. "I didn’t mean to shout at you. It’s just that you don’t listen to me."
"You’re the one who doesn’t listen to me." She pouted. "You’re becoming a rebellious little brother. That’s not good. I’m the big sis. Now tell me the problem."
"It’s nothing. I just... I just want to do something else than play."
Hera blinked as he looked away. "Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Pinky swear?"
Frank slowly looked back at her and lied without batting an eye. "Yes, pinky swear."
"That’s good!" she smiled in satisfaction, leaning her arms against the table. "I thought you were planning to leave. I kept thinking about it, and it’s not good."
"You have Princess and now... that fatty," he muttered as he poured some fluid into the glass. "Even if I leave, you have many other siblings."
"But you’re Frank and not Princess and Ralph."
This time, Frank didn’t speak anymore and just ignored her. He acted as if she wasn’t there until five minutes later, he stopped once again.
"What are you still doing here?" he asked as he turned his head to her.
Hera was still leaning against the table with her arms on the edge and her chin on top of them. Her brows rose at his question, tilting her head to the side.
"Didn’t you say you’re going to play with Princess?" he repeated. "Now that you know I’m not angry, you should go."
"Why?"
"Huh?"
"Why do I have to go?" she clarified, blinking innocently. "I already ditched them because I was worried about you. But now that we’re clear, I want to stay because I want to play with you."
Frank’s tensed muscles relaxed slightly. "I’m not playing."
"I know you’re experimenting." Hera smiled brightly as she gazed at the glasses on the table. "And I think it’s interesting. I want to watch."
For a moment, Frank couldn’t say a word, and he could only stare at her bright smile. Without him knowing, the side of his lips curled up into a smile as his eyes shone with excitement.
"Do you want to try?" he asked, watching her perk up at him.
"Can I?"
"Of course."
"Then I want to!" Hera excitedly jumped and hurriedly skipped her steps beside him. "What should I do?"
"You wear these gloves first and these goggles." Frank took off his gloves and goggles, handing them to her. He helped her put on the goggles, smiling brightly as he looked at her adorable face.
Like magic, his suppressed dismay vanished when she chose to be with him instead of Princess or Ralph, now known as Fig.
