Chapter 669: Closing a Chapter in his life

[City Jail: Visitation Room]

"Hah." Silas let out a snicker as soon as he went inside the visitation room, eyes swirling with malice upon seeing the person inside. The officer with him pushed him a little, making him drag his feet to the table, and watching the same officer attach his cuffs to the steel bar on the table.

"What a nice surprise," Silas mused as he looked at Axel sitting across from him. "I didn’t think you’d ever muster the courage to come and visit the man who tried to disintegrate you, Axel. Surely, you’ve grown."

Axel maintained a plain expression, assessing Silas’s face. It had only been over a month since Silas was arrested. Therefore, it wasn’t surprising the man hadn’t reflected on his crimes. If anything, he seemed to have been fitting well inside.

"I’m sorry," Axel breathed out despite the malicious look he was getting from his cousin. "I’m sorry for what happened to Aunt Olivia and what you went through, Silas."

Silas arched a brow as the corner of his lips curled up into a smirk. "Your apology... is decades late, Axel."

"I know." Axel’s response was quick and unbending. "I know it’s late, but I just think someone in the family still needs to say it. Regardless of your recent actions, our family — Mom and Dad and Grandma — owed you an apology."

Silas opened his mouth, but his voice didn’t come out of his throat. Instead, he forced a laugh and looked away, shaking his head.

"They do owe me a lot of things, but it’s not your job to apologize in their stead, you dummy." He snapped his eyes at Axel, smacking his lips. "And even if they apologize, we cannot change everything. My mother is gone, and that fucker of a father is also dead. I am now here, stuck in this place for the rest of my life."

He tugged the cuffs around his wrists, producing a clanging noise. "I don’t regret what I did, Axel. If anything, my only regret is that Grandma is still alive. I should’ve killed her instead. You know? I think you and Dom are right. I pointed my gun at the wrong person because if I simply plotted her death, it’d be a lot easier for me to take down the entire Zhu Family."

Axel pressed his lips into a thin line as he studied the look dominating Silas’s face. He wasn’t expecting anything from Silas. Of course, the man hated their family all his life. A month in jail wasn’t enough to change that. After all, prison could change a person for the better or for worse.

"Axel, I know Dom didn’t mean to do it, but in a way, he killed my mother. Because of him, that man found where we live. If only he kept his letters discreetly, my mother and I would’ve been living our lives peacefully," Silas continued, leaning forward with his hands linked together. "But no, Axel. Dominic led that man to us, and Grandma let that man go. Lionel and Ria, your parents, did nothing. Doing nothing and simply watching on the sidelines can be considered their participation in that man’s crime. If you came here to see if I’m regretting anything, you’re wasting your time."

"I hate the Zhu family and I will continue to do so until my last breath," he added, stressing each syllable. "Though if there’s anyone I don’t hate that much, that’ll be you. You were too young back then to do or know anything, after all."

"Then why did you kill me?"

Silas shrugged. "Collateral damages are done in war."

"So I’m just collateral damage?"

"You were in the wrong place and time, Axel," Silas stressed. "But don’t speak as if you didn’t anticipate that. You were there and, from what I believe, I think you expected that to happen."

"I was hopeful that you’d changed your mind."

"Disappointed I didn’t?" Silas let out a shallow laugh. "How cute. Axel, I didn’t want to kill you. Matter of fact, if I succeed, I’ll let you off. I’m annoyed that you always pick on me, but in a way, I understand that you’re like that. A person who wears his heart on his sleeve, making everyone read him like an open book. Such innocence. It’s a shame that you’ve changed."

The corner of his mouth curled up, assessing Axel from up and down. "I don’t see your heart in your sleeve anymore, and those eyes don’t shine the way they did. In a way, I feel proud." He moved forward even more, dawdling his next words;

"I might’ve not dragged the Zhu family down, but I succeeded in one thing. I changed the only person that glues that family together." Silas slowly leaned back, chuckling smugly at Axel. "It’s only a matter of time before that family falls. Thank you for coming today, Axel. At least now I know it’s not a total failure."

He raised his brows and added, "You’ll be the cause of that family’s destruction. And when that happens, I’ll be here laughing my head off."

Axel remained quiet despite everything that Silas spewed. If this was before, he would aggressively defend himself or berate him. But there was no point anymore.

"You were right, Silas," he said under his breath. "I did change and even I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not. However, just for the mere fact I don’t want you to be happy, I’ll do my best not to ruin the family even when this family’s future will completely be in my hands."

"You should’ve asked for help, Silas." Axel slowly pushed himself up, gazing down at the man whom he once called family. "Grandma and my parents might not have done something, but if you truly know me, you’d know I’ll side with you."

His lips quivered slightly as he forced his voice out. "I hate the fact that you didn’t say anything to me. It makes me think you’ve somehow protected me from my family’s actions."’

"But you tried to drown me in acid, so we’re quits now. Tiger told me to wait for him so he could let me punch you, but I don’t need to resort to more violence," he continued in the same tone, not faltering or backing down. "Silas Zhu, I forgive you for what you had done to me, but I’ll never forget it. This will be the last time you’ll ever get to see me. I won’t even come to your funeral. You’re dead to me."

After saying his piece, Axel marched away while Silas remained in his seat. Silas kept his eyes on the empty chair across from him, cocking his head back, eyes on the shut door where Axel left.

"Good," he whispered with a scoff. "Let’s not see each other, ever."

Silas peeled his eyes away from the door, letting out a short laughter through his closed lips. It was true he couldn’t see Axel’s heart in his sleeve anymore, but that last remark revealed Axel’s heart. Axel meant it.

And that was the last time Silas ever saw any member of the Zhu family.
