Chapter 653: Guilty as charged
Three days later...
"Bro, where’s sis?" Axel suddenly stopped reading the book Sebastian recommended to him the moment he thought of his sister-in-law. He turned his head and there, sitting on the one-seater couch, was Dominic playing on a portable gaming device.
Weird that Axel was reading while Dominic was playing. Did they somehow got sucked into a parallel world without them knowing? Or was the world ending?
"Working," Dominic answered as his upper body tilted a bit while he was engrossed in the game.
"Working?" Axel frowned, watching his brother get sucked into the addicting world of games. "Why is she working? Shouldn’t she be resting? I mean, it’s been three days since I last saw her."
"Mhm. I miss her too. Though she might come home later or tomorrow. Just wait a bit."
"That’s not the point." Axel let out a deep sigh. "Bro, can you please stop playing for a bit?"
"I’m on a crucial part."
"But —" He opened his mouth, but the rest of his words rolled back into his throat. He shook his head helplessly, sighing for the umpteenth time. "Just what is going on here? He didn’t hit his head and forgot who he was, right?"
"I can hear you, Axel. And no, I didn’t hit my head. I inflicted scratches and a bit of bruise because I wasn’t careful, but I’m perfectly fine."
"Then why are you playing instead of doing something else?"
"Like?"
"Like... something more important!"
This time, Dominic glanced at his brother, but then refocused his attention on the gaming device in his possession. "There’s nothing interesting to see in the news. It’s practically the same thing and I’m fed up hearing our family’s story over and over — nothing that I don’t know of."
"Well, how about the company? I’m sure the Lyon Group is facing some sort of crisis."
"Mhm. The stock market is dipping, and some investors seem to be planning to pull out. Not to mention, a small group was protesting in front of the office, saying we’re corrupt, and so on. If this continued, I might as well declare bankruptcy."
Axel blinked, staring at his brother, who was still engrossed in the game, despite everything he just said. "And you’re doing nothing? I mean, you’re playing, so that’s something. But aren’t you planning on doing something about this?"
"What else can I do? Everyone knows I’m in a comatose."
"That’s not what I mean — oh, god." Axel pressed the bridge of his nose in distress, confused at his brother’s lack of urgency. They were brothers, so he knew his big brother very well.
This wasn’t the first time Dominic faced a crisis throughout his career. However, Dominic often finds a solution before things get worse. He wasn’t the type to ignore issues that involved the company, but now, by the looks of it, Dominic didn’t plan on smoothening things out.
Why?
"Bro, are we going to become poor?" Axel asked quietly, frowning. "Will you declare bankruptcy?"
"I haven’t thought about it."
"Then are you planning about something else?"
"Not at the moment."
"Ugh..." Axel ruffled his hair in irritation as this was akin to talking to a boy in his adolescence. "If the company is dying, and you haven’t thought if you’re just going to let it sink or not and have no plans at the moment, what are you doing?"
Dominic paused as all the emotion on his face faded, putting down the portable gaming device to his lap as he heard, ’defeat.’
"Great," he breathed out with a poker face. "What am I doing? I’m playing, Axel. Thanks to you, I died at the hands of the Dragon."
"Good."
"That’s not good." Dominic shook his head. "It’s a bad premonition. This is like an omen."
"Bro, our omen is you playing while our company is taking a nosedive."
"Axel, what do you think of living in poverty?"
"What?"
"Can you live without money?"
"Of course I can live, but hell no!" Axel’s answer was quick as if he didn’t need a second to think about it. "There’s nothing good about being poor, you know? No person in this world would want to be poor. Why are you asking? Are you going to declare bankruptcy?"
"No. I’m just curious about your answer." Dominic slowly set his eyes back on the portable gaming device and lifted it in front of him. "And I won’t declare bankruptcy. Regardless of my opinion about our family, I can’t let my children suffer just because this family is messed up to the core."
"Oh..."
"I’m just not doing anything because it is not the time yet. Let the stocks dip and the public say all kinds of things about this family," he continued in the same monotonous voice, pressing the touchpads to redo the level of his game. "If the investors pull out, I still got your sister to invest in the company. Her wealth is ten times more than the accumulated sum of the investments in the recent years."
Axel blinked. "Where did she get all the money?"
"She —" Dominic bit his tongue and snapped his eyes at his brother. "She’s been into cryptocurrency the past few months. That’s where she put all her allowances."
"Oh..." Axel rocked his head, brows furrowed. "But didn’t that market go down for a while now?"
"Don’t worry. I don’t think our partners and investors are that dumb to pull out," Dominic spoke, diverting Axel’s attention so he would stop asking questions. "Let things flow on their own. Things will slowly move to their rightful place in the future. Crisis is normal in life, so don’t worry much about it."
"Fine." Axel sighed once more and watched Dominic slowly get engrossed in the game. The corner of his lips slowly curled up into a smile and before he knew it, he blurted out quietly. "You also think Grandma and our parents simply took advantage of Aunt Olivia’s wish to protect their reputation, don’t you?"
Dominic didn’t answer, but his silence and lack of interest were enough for Axel to get his answer. That was the only explanation Axel could think of for Dominic’s lack of urgency to save the company.
"Thanks," he breathed out.
"For?"
"Er... rebelling?"
"Don’t thank me," Dominic replied after a while, eyes still on his game. "If not for my children, I would’ve let the Lyon Group fall. I’m doing this for them, and not for anyone."
"But I still appreciate that you didn’t side with them." Axel pressed his lips into a thin line, smiling. "They are at fault this time. Though I won’t forgive Silas for trying to kill me, this family created him."
Dominic snapped his eyes over the device to see his brother, only to hear another ’defeat.’ This time, however, he didn’t care much about redoing the game. He nodded at Axel as he said,
"Guilty as charged."
Axel smiled. "Now, what is my sister exactly doing?"
"I don’t know?" Dominic looked up for a moment, imagining all the crazy stuff Heaven could be doing to prove herself to her men. She could be fighting them in a deadly match — who knows?
"I don’t want to think about it. Bear, Gray, and Princess were with her. So, I guess she’d be fine," he continued, smiling as he reminded himself not to worry. But after a second, he frowned. "Is she really okay?"
