Chapter 649: Poison

"He’s the reason Hera Cruel died."

Being a princess of the most notorious couple that was matched made in hell made her life far more dangerous even as a child. Although growing up, she was able to grow numb and deal with it, it was not enough. People died just tasting her food, and she lost countless men so she could live. Therefore, when Hera managed to build her power and influence as the respectable and fearsome don of the Cruel crime family, she thought of building tolerance towards drugs and poison.

Everyone was against the idea. That was akin to suicide. Who in their sound mind would do that? She had men — capable men who were willing to die for her. This idea was dangerous, but despite everyone’s disapproval, Hera called the shots.

Thus, she pushed through the plan.

The first time was hell. She could still vividly remember the heat burning under her skin and how her heart raced as if it would explode from within. However, she didn’t stop. Even though she nearly died on the first try, it wasn’t enough to change her mind.

"And where in here is this Dragon — I mean, this Frank comes in?" Dominic asked, confused. "It sounds to me that it was your fault and not anyone else’s."

Heaven let out a shallow laugh, adjusting her position a bit so her shoulder was resting against the pillow. "He’s the only one who wasn’t against the idea."

"But even so, it’s still your decision to put poison in your system."

"He’s the one who prescribed me all the poisons. He’s the one getting it for me."

"And?"

"And... because I trust him, I took everything he gives me. Frank used to have an inkling in poisons, so he was very good at it."

Dominic blinked, eyes still on his wife. "I’m still confused, Hera. For some reason, what you’re telling me sounds like you’re not the Hera I thought you were. No offense, but what I mean by this is that, no matter how you trust him, I don’t think you’d simply believe his words just because you grew up together."

"Bear had always been around you," he continued, trying to make sense of everything. "But, weird and confusing as it sounds, you trusted him with all your life but had never given him the full power over you like that."

"I give you full power over me."

"Then, does that mean...?"

"No." A shallow chuckle slipped past her lips, shaking her head mildly. "That’s true. I trust my men with all my life, but I always make sure everything they tell me is true. As I mentioned, betrayals in the underground happen on a daily basis. One second, they’re your comrades and then blink your eyes, they got you at gunpoint."

Heaven paused as she sighed, peeling her eyes from him to the television, now on mute. "Before I pushed through that journey, I did my own research. That is why, even when my men were against it, I was confident I would not die. I also know that what Frank is giving and telling me is the truth."

"But what I didn’t know was that..." she slowly set her eyes back to Dominic, balling her hands into a fist until she was clutching the blanket over her legs. "Combining them all in my system is lethal and there’s a high probability I’d die... slowly and painfully. And he knew that."

"It’s dumb, but I was poisoning myself. Seven years later, I’m at the last thread of my life. I’m not saying it was all his fault because I am as well for not knowing better," she continued. "I don’t hate him for trying to kill me, but I hate myself for taking in a monster like him in my own home where me and my family sleep."

"That’s why if there’s anyone who should deal with him, it should be me," she added and sighed. "But anyway, I ran out of time before I could even bury him in the same mud where I picked him. Back then, he rose to power almost overnight. Killing me can make you some sort of god in that place, you know? It’s been years since I died and, knowing him, he surely has a lot of power now."

"Do you think he was able to surpass you?"

"Depends, but in a way, yes." Her answer was quick, nodding without a second hesitation. "Even during my peak, I couldn’t catch him."

"Or maybe you just let him go."

"Maybe?" She smiled and shrugged. "But the reality remained. I didn’t touch him for a reason; I will not win against him if I am not in my best shape."

"I sort of getting a grasp of it." Dominic rocked his head in understanding. "No wonder Tiger missed him."

"Hmm?"

"He shot the man three times, and he missed three times."

"Haha. He didn’t." She let out a short laugh. "He just didn’t aim at him properly."

"And why is that?"

"Dragon... is his best friend." Heaven sighed heavily, leaning her side against Dominic until the side of her head was resting on his shoulder. "Tiger is annoying ninety percent of the time, but he’s actually very emotional."

"Unbelievable."

"I know, right? But that’s true. And do you know that he once almost died because his opponent was a woman? That dude was beaten black and blue. I have to deal with her or else he would’ve died."

"If someone else told me this, I would not believe a word of that sentence." His response earned her laughter and a smile as he leaned his head against the top of her head. He slipped his fingers in between her fingers, clasping her hand before guiding it to his lips. "Are you okay?"

"Why wouldn’t I be?"

"Aside from the things that were already on our plate, I want to know the status of your heart," he clarified, brushing her knuckles with his thumb. "Dragon seems to be very important to you."

"He was, but I already settled my emotions about it long ago."

"Then why do I feel like something’s off?"

Heaven slowly lifted her head from his shoulder, twisting her body to face him. Her lips curled up into a subtle smile, sighing heavily.

"Because he showed up, and that means I can’t keep being Heaven Liu. I don’t know what he wants from Primo, but once that man wakes up, I get the feeling I might actually realize that these invisible chains around my ankle aren’t just a figment of imagination," she confessed under her breath. "I... don’t want Basti and Miracle to have the same childhood as I had, which led me to the life I walked."
