Chapter 634: Are you saying you like me too?

"Is there really no hope for the both of us?"

It was weird to hear these words under the bed where both Ivy and Dane were hiding. However, listening to her sentiments somehow pulled them into a quiet world where they were just the two of them. For a moment, the two of them forgot the situation they were in as if this issue was far more important than the chaos raging on.

"Tell me, Mr. Zhang. Did you not like me, even a tiny bit after all these years?" Ivy added quietly.

Dane didn’t answer for a long time. He kept his eyes on the back of her head, lips drawn into a thin and tight slash.

Was there really no hope for the both of them?

Did he not like her even a tiny bit after all these years?

"Not liking you is impossible, Miss Wei," he answered in a hushed tone, relaxing his body on the floor as his breathing stabilized a bit. "You’re beautiful, smart, and successful. You can stand on your own and shine the brightest in your field. Yet, you’re also kind and charitable, generous and forgiving. Only a fool will not like you."

"So you like — ack!" Ivy accidentally bumped the back of her head against the pallet attached underneath the bed at her rash action. "Ouch..."

She slowly turned her head to face him again while rubbing it to soothe the pain. She spoke, "Are you saying you like me too?"

"I’m answering your second question — more like clarifying," he said with a deep sigh. "I might be like this, but I’m still a man. Having someone like you pursue me is flattering. It makes me wonder what you see in me that I don’t even see. It’s amazing in a way, but..."

Dane paused for a moment and let out another sigh once more. "I like you a little, but at the same time, I don’t think I deserve you."

"What?"

"You’re beautiful from inside and out, but I am just me," he continued solemnly. "I know you’re thinking that doesn’t matter, but it matters to me. It matters a lot."

A thin layer of tears coated her eyes with mixed emotions swirling in her heart. "What nonsense as you saying now?"

"We are not fit together is what I’m saying, Miss Wei," he said under his breath. "I know you’re not asking me to fix you or fill the things that you lack, but at the end of the day, I know for myself not only I will fail to do the duties of being your partner, but I will only hurt you. That is why, stop."

"Stop pursuing me, Miss Wei." Dane drew a deep breath as he steeled his heart, knowing his words would cut through her heart. "To be frank, you pursuing me just makes me more guilty for not reciprocating. Because I think because of me, you’re missing a whole ton of good things you can give to yourself. There were many good guys out there. I know one day there will be someone who will give you more than the bare minimum without even asking."

Ivy and Dane held each other’s gazes as he offered her a kind smile. Everything he said was nothing but the truth. They were the words he couldn’t tell her before.

It was true that he was flattered by the attention Ivy was giving her. However, Dane knew himself more than anyone. He knew that if he accepted Ivy, it wasn’t out of pure love. It would be because of the attention she was giving him. That would be too unfair for her. Therefore, he had always resorted to a quick and short refusal.

If this was in another time and in another world, perhaps he wouldn’t have any hesitation. Ivy was not someone hard to love, after all. It was just that Dane knew exactly what he could and couldn’t do. So, even if there was a bit of attraction toward her, he never allowed his feelings to cloud his judgment.

"You’re really cruel, you know?" A tear rolled down the bridge of her nose, pushing his side weakly. "You haven’t even tried dating me and yet, you already assumed it wouldn’t work. So, you don’t even consider giving it a go."

"I’m sorry."

She sniffed hard, trying her best to keep her sniffles as quiet as possible. "I thought I had prepared myself already, but it still hurts."

"I’m sorry."

"Stop," she whispered. "Why are you sorry? If you’re cruel, then just be cruel until the end. I’m just crying right now, not because I want to hear you apologize repeatedly. I’m doing it because it hurts. I’m hurt and scared because now I have to keep my promise."

Her lips quivered, but her eyes that were brimming with tears bravely held his gaze. "But I am a little relieved to hear that you liked me — even though it’s a tiny bit. At least, by that, I can delude myself that once I moved on, you will regret letting someone like me go."

Dane pursed his lips, and the corner of them curled up into a helpless sigh. "I’m already regretting."

"Then that’s just level one." She hiccuped. "But can we still be friends?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I don’t think you will move on if I still keep you around."

She didn’t speak for a moment before she asked. "What if I moved on? Can we still be friends, then?"

"Of course." He nodded, smiling subtly. "Until then, let’s remain acquaintances."

Just as the two of them calmed down after addressing this issue of the heart, Dane suddenly hushed. Both of them instinctively went completely silent as they heard loud footsteps. He had his finger up to his lips while Ivy bit her lips, both frozen on their spot. They held their breaths, wondering if the enemies had gone away, and didn’t consider they were now hiding in one of the suites.

Until...

BANG BANG BANG!

The moment the rounds of bullets resonated just not far away from them, both Ivy and Dane screamed their lungs out.

"Ahh!!"

"Kyah!!"
