Chapter 266: If that is what you want

Chapter 266: If that is what you want

There were many things Bear could remember about Hera. His life revolved around her for many years, but there was one thing he could never forget about her.

Back then, Hera would habitually suggest that he retire from his duties. Some days, he would feel annoyed by her, as it made him feel less wanted. Other times, he would appreciate her intention behind her suggestions.

Hera had always wished to be like everybody else. However, she didn’t have the capability to trust someone to a certain degree or let anyone in that area of her heart. Thus, her wish to become a mother or wife was farfetched. It wasn’t because there wasn’t anyone willing to give her family, but rather, Hera wasn’t desperate enough. So, she was glad that Bear found someone whom he could trust, love, and someone who had accepted not just his light, but also his darkness.

Even on her deathbed, Hera kept telling Bear to take care of his wife. To make up for all the time he was absent and the troubles he had caused her. That was a part of her last will.

But alas...

"Bernard!" Her voice shook, eyes bloodshot. "Can you hear yourself? Esme was there when you needed her the most! And yet, where were you when she needed you?!"

For a moment, time stopped for Bear as her furious remarks echoed in his mind. His pupils went wide, staring at the furious Heaven Liu as she ground her teeth angrily.

How?

How did you know her name?

No.

That wasn’t the right question.

Why?

Was that how he should start the myriads of questions surging in his brain?

His mind went blank for a moment, not knowing what to think or what he would feel about this development. All he could do was stare at her blankly with a tinge of surprise and confusion.

"You..." Bear’s grip around her wrist grew firmer as his pair of silver eyes shook. "Boss?"

Heaven’s breath hitched as if his call was akin to a bucket of ice-cold water splashing her back to reality. Her eyes slowly dilated, realizing she allowed her emotions to overtake her, compelling her to react in a certain way she shouldn’t.

Oh, no...

"It’s you, right?" Bear tugged her wrist slightly, throwing all the logical senses that had been tearing him apart the entire day. "I was not wrong, and it was really you —"

"Let me go," she breathed out coldly, pulling her wrist from him, but to no avail. "Bear, release my hand before I break yours."

"No."

"Bear." Her voice shook once again, balling her hand into a tight fist.

"You know full well I can break yours before you do." Bear breathed out a jagged breath, having mixed emotions and a muddled mind. Yet, he couldn’t make up anything that had been filling his head. "Tell me how did it —"

"Hmm?"

Just before Heaven could act to escape his clutch, both Bear and Heaven froze at the muffled sound on their side.

"Mommy? Uncle Bear?" Both of them turned their heads, only to see Sebastian sitting up on the bed while rubbing his weary eyes. "Why are you two shouting? Are you fighting?"

Her face crumbled at the sight of her son, casting Bear a fierce look. "Let’s talk about it some other time," she whispered quietly but firmly.

"Don’t let me hurt you in front of him..." Heaven’s neck turned taut at the skipping breaths she was missing. "Please. I’m begging you. Not in front of him, Bernard."

Bear held his breath for a moment, eyes fixed on her. The fiery look in her eyes as she spoke through her gritted teeth somehow overlapped with Hera’s face whenever she was angry. Although this was the first time she ’begged’, he could see her resemblance with Hera.

"I..." Bear slowly released her wrist, noticing the red prints he left on it. "I’m... sorry."

"Get out." Heaven hissed before going to her son, sitting on the bedside table while forcing a smile on her face. "Sorry for waking you up, baby. Were we too loud?"

Sebastian blinked and blinked at his mother, but he didn’t speak. He slowly shifted his attention to the other man in his room, cocking his head to the side.

"Mommy, were you arguing with Uncle Bear?" he asked, setting his eyes back to his mother.

"No." Heaven shook her head. "I mean, Bear misunderstood something. So I was trying to explain things to him, but it’s no big deal."

"Really?"

"Yes." Heaven drew a deep breath to maintain her smile, casting Bear a quick look. "Why are you still here? Go back to your post."

Bear looked at her with conflict, balling his hand into a fist. Reluctance was obvious in his eyes, biting his tongue to stop himself from asking her thousands of questions that even he didn’t know where to start.

"I’ll call you once I’m ready to talk," she added, this time in a much calmer tone. "For now, take a few days offs and clear your mind. Wait until I call for you."

His mouth parted to refuse her order, but he ended up zipping his lips tight.

"If that is what you want," he said, bowing. "I’m sorry for waking you up, little master. I’ll be on my way."

With that being said, Bear turned on his heel and dragged his feet away. His mind drifted elsewhere, feeling his heart weigh him down. Meanwhile, Heaven and Sebastian stared at his retreating figure before the little master faced his mother.

"Mother, why did Uncle Bear look so sad?" he inquired, worried. "Did you two really fight? Lying is bad, right?"

Her smile slightly faded while staring at her son, unable to speak a word at the moment. "Can I... hug you, Basti?"

"Hmm?" Sebastian’s brows rose, studying the sadness in her eyes. He didn’t point it out and just smiled, nodding. "Okay! Let’s hug!"

Sebastian jumped and embraced his mother in a bear hug, sitting on her lap so she could hug him as well. His smile remained while his mother rested her chin on his shoulder.

"Yes, Basti. Uncle Bear and I somehow argued, but we’ll sort it out." Her voice was muffled as her eyes softened with sadness. "Like we always do, so don’t worry."

The little master just glanced at her, instinctively patting her back to comfort her. "Mommy, is Uncle Bear important to you?"

"Mhm." Her eyelids partially closed, recalling all the good and bad memories she shared with Bear in a split second. "He’s like a father to me."

"I’m sure Uncle Bear thinks you’re also his daughter. Don’t be sad, Mommy. You can stay with Basti for as long as you want."

Her embrace tightened, burying her face in his shoulder. "Thanks, baby."
