Chapter 1141: You fall, I fall.
"I haven’t told anyone about it, Butler Fu." Ivy smiled subtly. "But I’m sure everyone who will hear about this career change will be shocked."
"You haven’t told anyone? Even Madam Wei?" asked Butler Fu out of pure curiosity.
Ivy pursed her lips and forced a smile. "Especially her.."
"I understand." Butler Fu smiled in understanding. "But Miss Wei, even if people see this surprising, I don’t think it is bad at all."
"It’s not." Ivy smacked her lips as she turned her head in the direction where Dominic went. "Dom can be a prick sometimes, but I respect him. It doesn’t matter if I am the boss of my own company or her secretary. I don’t think there’s a difference aside from the title."
Butler Fu smiled warmly. "Time truly flies by. I can still remember when you used to play in the courtyard. You and the second young master always play a prank on the young master."
"And no matter what we do, our pranks always backfire on us," Ivy added with a laugh.
"Yet the more you failed, the more motivated you were."
"Those times." Ivy couldn’t help but smile warmly as she remembered her childhood with the Zhu brothers. "Even with how time flies, they’re still the same."
She snapped her eyes back to Butler Fu, who was just standing near the couch she was sitting on. "They still manage to irritate me no one else can."
"I am certain it’s the same for them." Butler Fu smiled back approvingly, while she rocked her head in agreement. "I’m glad to hear that you three are working together."
"Me too, Butler Fu. It’s a surprise for me since I never thought of working with them, but I’m glad I am."
The two of them smiled at each other as they got to talk about Ivy’s change of career and a bit of catching up. It had been a while since she visited the Zhu ancestral home. But as they continued their conversation, Ivy caught Dominic’s figure from the corner of her eyes.
"Oh, Dom is... back," she trailed off as soon as she saw the look of horror plastered on Dominic’s face.
Deep lines appeared between her brows, pushing herself up and rushing to him. "Dom, is everything okay?"
"Young Master, are you alright?" Butler Fu also went to Dominic, worried his visit to his grandmother didn’t end well.
Ivy and Butler Fu studied him and they could tell that Dominic was pale; it was as though he had seen a ghost. Despite his naturally sharp and cold facial features, it barely concealed the fright in his eyes.
"Everything’s... okay." Dominic swallowed down the tension in his throat, nodding at the two of them. "Butler Fu, I’m going now. Please look after Grandma. I’m leaving."
"Uh." Butler Fu glanced at Ivy on instinct, only to see her nod slightly. "Then, I’ll send you off and —"
"Don’t bother." Dominic waved dismissively as he started walking.
Ivy pursed her lips and forced a conflicted smile at Butler Fu before she followed Dominic.
"Dom, did something happen?" Ivy asked as soon as they walked out of the main door, jogging to catch up to him. "Did you and Grandma Zhu fight? Hey — wait!"
Ivy clenched her teeth and picked up her pace, ignoring her heels as she jogged on the concrete pathway toward the driveway. When she reached him, she grabbed his arm and stopped him.
"Dom!" she squeezed his arm, watching him look back at her. As soon as their eyes met, her breath hitched as the horror in Dominic’s face already disappeared without a trace. Instead, his eyes were burning so brightly they almost looked red. It was as though the devil within him had fully taken control over him.
"Dom..." she blurted out quietly. "What happened?"
"What my grandmother and I talked about is none of your concern." Dominic breathed out, his voice clearly displayed his repressed anger. "Go home and rest. I’ll see you in the morning tomorrow."
Dominic pulled his arm away with enough control not to hurt her. But as he turned his back on him, Ivy spoke.
"I know, Dom. I know what you discussed inside that room is none of my business." Ivy stormed toward him and stopped when she was in front of him. She spread her arms wide, blocking his path."But seeing you like that makes it my business. I don’t need to know every word said in there, but I won’t let you go off on your own with that temper."
"Step away."
"No."
"Don’t make me repeat myself."
"My job is to keep you in line." Ivy clenched her teeth, looking at him with solid determination. "I don’t need to grow up with you to know that look in your eyes. I’m not letting you kill someone tonight."
"I’m not going to kill someone."
"Your eyes tell me otherwise." She shook her head, eyes still on him. "Even if that isn’t the case, I feel like you will commit a terrible mistake you will regret for the rest of your life. I’m not letting you do that. Not when my life — my everything is on the line as well."
Ivy dropped her spread arms and marched toward him. She pressed her index against his chest.
"You fall, I fall. My life is in your hands and if you screwed up..." she stopped and just shook her head. "I’m not letting you screw things up. Not your life, not mine, and especially not my future."
The whisper of the wind slowly caressed their ears as they stared at each other. Their eyes showed no sign of backing down, and they knew each other. If they wouldn’t meet halfway, they would stay in that same spot all night.
"Dom, please." After a full minute of the staring competition, Ivy let out a deep sigh. "I’m speaking not just as one of your people, but also as your friend. Do not send me away."
Dominic found Ivy’s impudence and defiance annoying, especially at this time. However, at the same time, he was grateful she applied for the job earlier. Because if she hadn’t, Dominic might’ve done something terrible.
He took a deep breath and rocked his head. "Give Axel a call and tell him I’m dropping by the Secret Floor. I don’t want anyone to be there."
"Done." Ivy stepped aside and made way for him, watching him march toward their car. She let out another deep exhale before following him. She kept a safe distance from his back while dialing Axel to let him know of Dominic’s plans for the night.
