Chapter 1140: Served on a silver platter

[ZHU ANCESTRAL HOME]

Dominic sat on the chair while Grandma Zhu was still in the rocking chair. He arrived five minutes ago, but Grandma Zhu hadn’t said anything to him. He leaned back on the couch, checking his wristwatch.

’I’ll only stay here for another ten minutes,’he thought, knowing Ivy was outside with Butler Fu. He wouldn’t hear an end of it if he got out of here earlier than fifteen minutes.

Dominic snapped his eyes to the rocking chair where Grandma Zhu was. Another deep exhale slipped past his nostrils.

"Grandma, how are you?" he asked, and obviously, he got nothing from her. "It’s been a hectic week for me in the minister’s office. The meetings aren’t half as bad as the ones I used to have during my tenure in the company."

He paused, keeping his eyes on Grandma Zhu. "About Axel... he’ll come around. Basti and Miracle will visit you with Mom and Dad sometime this week. They’d been wanting to visit you, but it’s been a little tricky."

"How was Silas?" After another minute of silence, Grandma Zhu spoke.

"He is... doing fine."

"Dominic, your grandmother has made a lot of bad decisions in the past," she said. "But that doesn’t mean I don’t recognize my own family."

Dominic went quiet, sighing.

"All my life, I’ve been trying to protect this family," Grandma Zhu continued in the same slow yet clear, shaky voice. "I would do anything to protect my children. As long as they’re safe... I do not mind my bleeding back ."

Grandma Zhu’s eyes softened as she kept her eyes on the little flowerbed in the courtyard. "It doesn’t matter how much pain or danger I would be in. As a parent, I would do anything and everything for my boys. So, I do not blame you if you used your own cousin to take a bullet for you to protect your own."

"Silas was aware."

"I know he was. That kid isn’t an idiot; he’s evil and vengeful, but he was no idiot." Grandma Zhu sighed heavily, listening to her rocking chair creak rhythmically. "He truly reminds me of Leon."

Dominic frowned deeply but kept his thoughts to himself.

"I know how much you loathed your uncle, but no matter how much he makes me angry, he is my son. He will always be my son," she continued. "The son I loved, another holder of my heart, and the boy I tried to protect, even if it meant killing someone."

Dominic slowly furrowed his brows. Although he believed his grandmother’s hands weren’t as clean as he thought it was, he never would have imagined he would hear it from her mouth.

"I never would’ve told you this if not for what I’ve been hearing and seeing, Dominic," Grandma Zhu continued. "But back in the day, your grandfather... I loathed him with all the fiber of my body. Not only did he take women home to my house, bed them in my room, and give them my clothes and jewelries, he shredded my spirit from inside and out."

"The physical abuse and his promiscuous life, I could take — I could stomach, I could endure for the sake of keeping the family together," she added. "But when he raised his hand to my boys the first time, hurt them, and started suffering because of him... I had no choice. I’d rather have my boys remember him as a good father he used to be, instead of having them wish he’s dead."

A bitter smile turned up on Grandma Zhu’s face as she slowly turned her head in Dominic’s direction. "I killed for my boys, became a murderer to protect them. That is why I was in denial when I heard what Leon was doing."

"He couldn’t be like that. I didn’t raise him like that. My son... my beloved son made one mistake — one. He wouldn’t do it again. He will let this go. Those were the things I told myself back then." She slowly looked away from Dominic again. "I was so blinded at the fact that my son, whom I willingly became a murderer for, will end up becoming like his father."

"I was wrong." A layer of tears coated Grandma Zhu’s eyes as she smiled bitterly. "Leon didn’t take after his father, but he took after me. He might not be someone who would do anything to protect his family, but he is someone who will do anything to get what he wants. Even if it means... abducting his own nephew and killing his own wife."

"Grandma..."

"I am telling you this because those wrong decisions I made... are slowly creeping up in the present." She added before he could put any word in. "I killed your grandfather, but the person who covered it up is someone very dear to my heart. Though I wished I wouldn’t have met her and served my time instead."

"Grandma, what do you mean?" Dominic furrowed his brows. "Is something bothering you?"

"Someone will come to kill me, Dominic."

"No." Dominic shook his head. "I won’t let that happen."

Grandma Zhu turned her head and faced him, smiling. "Hera Cruel."

As soon as Dominic heard that name straight from his grandmother’s mouth, he froze. His pupils slowly dilated, gazing at the bitterness swirling in her eyes.

"Remember that name, Dominic," she remarked solemnly. "She will come to me and... kill me."

"Why — Grandma, I do not follow. Why would this Hera Cruel —" Dominic halted as soon as he saw the tear rolling down her eyes. And for some reason, he didn’t want to hear the answer. He shook his head, letting out a short laugh as he denied whatever thoughts that came into his head.

"Grandma, you didn’t..." — what did you do? — was a question he stopped himself from asking.

"I killed my husband," she confessed quietly. "But he isn’t the only one I sullied my hands for this family, Dominic. I also killed a good friend. Hera Cruel, that monster of a child, will come at me to kill me once she finds out I killed her mother. She won’t stop with that because she will then come after my family."

The moment those words rolled out of Grandma Zhu’s mouth, it felt like someone splashed Dominic with a bucketful of ice. He felt all the fibers of his body freeze as his face drained of color. Hera and Dominic had been thinking of ways and reasons to be enemies, but now, here it was right. Served on a silver platter.

Hera loved Grandma Zhu with all her heart, but once she figured that Grandma Zhu had anything to do with her mother’s death, SHE WOULD KILL HER.
