Chapter 1125: First day in her secretarial position
"Here are all the files you need to read and memorize." Dominic dropped a stack of documents in front of Ivy. "I need you to learn all of them by the end of the day."
Ivy gazed at the mountain of paperwork she had to memorize. "Reading all of them shouldn’t be a problem, but memorize?"
"Every word of it."
She slowly gazed up at him, her mouth falling open. She was hopeful to see the slightest sign he was joking, but there was none. Dominic was serious.
"Are you... punishing me?" she blurted out in disbelief. "Because you were forced to take me in, anyway?"
Dominic sighed deeply.
"If that is what you think, then quit now," was his only answer, putting another handful of documents on top of the mountains of documents. "The first ones were documents from the previous administration and for the transition. I already worked on them, but you should know every single bit of it. As the minister’s secretary, you have to learn my every little move and decision I made and will make."
"And these files were personal files about me," he continued.
"That includes my medical files, my finances, my divorce, people who aren’t fond of me, people I’m associated with, and prospective people I could be friends and enemies in the future," he added in one breath. "One doesn’t outweigh the other. Both works are just as important."
"I’m not giving you a hard time, Ivy," Dominic added. "As much as I hate to admit it, but Dimitri is the only one who did the job well."
Dominic raised his brows at her before walking back to his office. Ivy pressed her lips into a thin line, watching him from her small desk, which was right next to Dominic’s. A transparent wall and door was the only thing that was separating their office.
Axel was still in his brother’s office, working on the couch. She heard Axel brought his office to his brother, but Dominic didn’t want more people in his office. Hence, Axel’s people had to work outside.
"As much as I hate to admit it, he’s right," Ivy grumbled as she took the top file. "Dimitri might be insane, but he did the job well. I’m not losing to him."
Holding on to the determination that she could do better and prove to Dominic she was an asset, Ivy started working. It was a good thing Ivy did her research before making the decision, studying the past administration and the transition process, and watching Dominic’s campaign. Therefore, she already had an idea of the difference he wanted to make, his mission, and where to focus.
With that thought in mind, Ivy segregated the files in order. She first focused on his administrative work, skimming through some other documents. She still paid attention to some things that were worth noticing, jotting down her short thoughts and notes.
Time went by in a blur as Dominic, Axel, and Ivy immersed themselves in work. It was almost like an ordinary day for them. But instead of spending it in their offices (for Axel and Ivy), they were working in Dominic’s office. It almost felt and seemed like a group study, except they weren’t.
"The office budget..." Ivy jolted as a faint noise abruptly interrupted her. Looking up, she caught Axel knocking on the glass wall with the tip of the umbrella. "What is he doing?"
Axel pointed at the table with the umbrella before he mouthed, "Lunchtime."
"Oh." Ivy intuitively gazed down at her wristwatch, only to see it was already half past noon. She glanced at her desk, only to realize she hadn’t even finished half of it.
Taking a few folders with her, she joined Axel in Dominic’s office.
"Working hard, aren’t you?" Axel teased as soon as she stepped in. "Don’t skip your meal just because my brother gave you an impossible task."
"I’m a hard worker, but not stupid," she returned, sitting down on the same couch. She glanced at the takeout foods on the table and sighed.
"Don’t complain," Axel said as he took a takeout box, eating straight from it. "Just eat. If you don’t like the taste, then just swallow it. If you think you don’t need to eat, you’re wrong. Your brain needs some source of energy aside from willpower."
Ivy stared at Axel as the latter was eating while keeping most of his attention on his laptop. She glanced at the desk, only to see Dominic reading a document.
"You should eat," she said. "You heard Axel. Don’t skip meals."
Dominic didn’t answer, but Axel did.
"Didn’t you read his personal file?" Axel muttered, clicking a button on the laptop, and left a short comment about the virtual meeting he was participating in. Once he was done, he continued what he was trying to tell her. "As an assistant, it’s your job to schedule his lunch too with consideration of his diet."
"It’s my first day."
Axel looked back at her. "That’s why I’m not scolding you."
"Goodness." Ivy shook her head and huffed in frustration. She looked at the food and opened one, picking up a spoon and fork to give to Dominic. But just as she stood, Axel spoke.
"Uh, what are you doing?" he asked.
"Isn’t it obvious?" she returned sarcastically. "I’m gonna feed the boss."
"But he doesn’t eat meat on Mondays."
"What? Since when?"
"Since today. Read his file," Axel advised while tipping his head. "And also, you should eat. He’s not having lunch on Mondays."
"Why? Because it’s part of his sacred ritual?"
"You do know he can hear us, right?" Axel gasped in dismay. "He is just choosing to ignore us, but he’ll use this time to win an argument next time."
Ivy was rendered speechless, looking at Axel and then at Dominic. She was too close to thinking these two were simply giving her a hard time. But she wouldn’t let them win. She needed the job; she needed her sanity, and if this was going to keep her sane, so be it.
Ivy sat down beside Axel quietly. She didn’t bother with him anymore, preparing her food. As soon as she started eating, she opened the folder to continue reading. The file she picked up wasn’t Dominic’s administrative work, but rather Dominic’s schedule and plans for the next month.
’This is not... huh?’Deep lines appeared between her brows, noticing some strange anomaly in it. "Dom, why do you need to meet with different bank managers ten times throughout this month?"
She gazed up at Dominic and got her answer, even without him looking.
"Money."
"Money?" she squinted her eyes. "Dirty money?"
This time, Dominic lifted his gaze at her. "Yes. Stolen one."
"Oh." Ivy rocked her head. "Then why do you keep transferring it? I can arrange to make it untraceable."
"I already did," said Dominic. "But it’s not working. Already lost a few million in the past few days."
Ivy straightened her back, now interested. "Someone is stealing it? Who?"
"The owner."
"By owner... you mean you?"
"I’m the one who stole the money, Ivy," Dominic clarified. "And I’m not giving it back."
