Chapter 1124: Job Interview

"I can’t delude myself that I’m fine, Dom. Therapy and meds aren’t helping anymore. I need your help, I need you, Dom. Otherwise, I’ll just lose my mind slowly and painfully. Help me. I’m begging you, please."

Dominic tapped his fingertips against the desk while holding Ivy’s intense gaze. He had been keeping an eye on Ivy. Hence, before the news about her broke out, he already knew what was going on in her. To be truthfully honest, he couldn’t blame her.

Ivy made a clear point.

If Dominic didn’t kill Katherine, Ivy would’ve killed her. Probably not as easily, but he was certain Ivy would win against that blonde. After all, Ivy was someone who wouldn’t go down without putting up a fight. And this? Her dilemma? Asking him for help was her only option to win against the monsters in her mind.

"Ivy," called Dominic quietly. "If there’s something I learned from someone who was in the same position as Tiger, is that you don’t fight the monsters and demons in your mind. You live with them. That is what you’re trying to do here, not what you made yourself believe."

"Then, I guess I’m on the correct path?" she replied. "Isn’t that good?"

His mouth parted to give her a piece of his wisdom, but before he could do so, the door flew open.

"What is the meaning of this?" Axel harrumphed, closing the door aggressively before storming in Ivy’s direction. When he stood in front of Dominic’s desk and beside Ivy, he showed his phone to her. "You’re declaring bankruptcy?"

Ivy furrowed her brows, reading the headline. "That article is stupid. I’m not declaring bankruptcy. I’m stepping down."

"What?!" Axel gasped. "Why?!"

"Ask him." Ivy jerked her chin in Dominic’s direction. "He knows why."

Axel intuitively looked at Dominic curiously. However, Dominic kept his eyes on Ivy.

"Because Miss Wei suddenly decided to leave her own company for a secretarial job in the minister’s office," Dominic summarized, making Axel dramatically gasped. "And this is her way of harassing me to hire her."

"I’m not harassing you and it’s not a sudden decision," Ivy clarified. "I’ve consented to it with my board and executives. They think it’s a wise career decision."

"Don’t tell me you told them I offered it to you?"

Ivy shrugged as she swallowed a mouthful of words back to her throat. "I’m not being given a chance, Dom. You know more than anyone that I’m the most qualified for the position. But you won’t even look at my application."

"No wonder he’s avoiding you," Axel murmured in dismay. "Ivy, have you ever applied for a job before? In case you don’t have any idea, there is a process. You can’t just skip the line just because you’ve known us for a long time."

"But that’s the point," Ivy argued. "You guys know me more than anyone! Even the things I don’t want you to know, you guys know! Is there anyone else you can trust at this point besides me?"

Axel went quiet, casting his brother a look.

"She has a point," he muttered. "The secretarial position is still vacant, and it’s a hassle to hire someone you can fully trust. I can assist you, but I still have a company to run. So I can’t do it full time."

"See?" Ivy smiled at Axel, giving Dominic a knowing look. "Axel agrees with me. Dom, after what Dane — I mean, that trash Dimitri did — you can never trust your secretary. Ever. Even if they’re good people, you can’t. You need someone smart, flexible, and just as determined as you."

"Not to mention, I don’t care whatever dirty secrets you have. I’ve seen enough," she added. "So, I will not question your decision unless I think you’re being stupid and have a death wish."

Dominic pinched the bridge of his nose in distress. This was one of the reasons he was avoiding Ivy because Axel was with him. He knew Axel would agree with her. After all, Dominic couldn’t deny that Ivy’s offer was more than tempting.

Dominic could no longer trust anyone who would work closely with him. After what Dane did to him, even if Dominic wanted to, he couldn’t trust anyone else. But Ivy would be a great addition to his team.

But...

"Ivy," he called solemnly and then cast Axel a look. "Axel, sit down over there. I want to talk to her."

"Fine." Axel rocked his head, leisurely walking to the couch to give them some space.

"You won’t ask him to go out?" Ivy asked as soon as she saw Axel idle on the couch.

"There’s no need," said Dominic. "I’ll just end up repeating myself. He already knew everything."

"I see." Ivy nodded. "So?"

"Ivy, before I say anything, I need to tell you something," Dominic pointed at the chair in front of his desk. "It’s a long discussion, but I’ll make it short for you."

Ivy sat down in the chair in front of the desk, eyes on him. "I’m listening."

"There’s a reason I took this position instead of forfeiting it," he started. "And that reason isn’t anything moral. If anything, the cause of it might break all principles and beliefs you exercised your whole life. Taking this job also means having you prepare to shoot a person when necessary."

"I know that." She nodded. "I have a good marksmanship. Though I’ll have to admit, shooting a person might take practice."

"You might die before you practiced enough."

"Test me."

Dominic sighed, leaning closer against the desk. "Tell me, Ivy. Just one more reason I should take you back in this hellhole. You know I’d need a reason once Tiger asked me why I exposed you to this kind of situation. I value my relationship with him and I don’t want to rub him the wrong way."

"Because it doesn’t make a difference to me, Dom." Ivy’s answer was quick and determined. "Back then, I thought I was safe, only to find out I wasn’t. All this time, we all thought I wasn’t exposed to such situations. But what happened?"

A glint flickered across her eyes as she looked more determined now. "I don’t want to be surprised anymore. You are not exposing me to this hell because I already am. Only this time, I want to be aware that I am exposed to this danger instead of being caught off guard."

"One more thing." Ivy huffed. "I realized I’m not the type to wait and daydream that god will give me what I want. I always work my ass off to get what I want, and right now, all I want is to make sure he is coming home. Even if it means doing something more than just dragging him by the ear. I’ll do it."
