Chapter 1117: This is the calm
"What the hell is that all about?" Axel gasped in disbelief, looking at his brother, who was sitting on the other side of the backseat. "What does that guy want?"
Dominic didn’t react, keeping his eyes on the window.
"Bro!" Axel cleared his throat. "You promised not to keep any more secrets. Is that a lie?"
"And I’m not saying anything because it’s not a secret, Axel." Dominic drew a deep breath, still not having the energy to face his brother. "At least, not mine."
"What do you mean, not yours?"
"It’s not something you and I should involve ourselves with. Nor it is something we have to fix ourselves," explained Dominic. "This is an issue Leo Wu had to face himself. I already did my part. On how things would go from hereon, that’s on them."
Dominic mentally nodded, believing in his decision about the situation. After all, even if Dominic wasn’t entirely at fault, he still felt responsible. He didn’t want to be drunk that night, but he fell into a trap. As a result, they had Sebastian.
In other words, he felt responsible for Heaven and Leo. Even though a part of him believed how they ended was her decision, he still had his fair share of it.
"If we’re all going to correct everything, then we should start on them," Dominic murmured, making Axel arch a brow and squint his eyes suspiciously. "That’s what putting things in order and their rightful place."
"Can’t relate," Axel commented, leaning on the side comfortably. "But if you think you did the right call, then I trust your judgment."
This time, Dominic set his eyes on his brother. "Why are you still here, by the way?"
"Huh?"
"Shouldn’t you have a company to run? If you slack, who is going to fund me on my next campaign?"
"You just got elected and barely started your term." Axel scrunched up his nose at his brother. "Do a good job. Then we can talk about your funds for your next campaign."
"Now, you sound like a boss." Dominic smiled in satisfaction. "So? Why are you still here?"
"I’m taking a time off," Axel nonchalantly reasoned. "I can’t lock my brother in any safety vault. So, I got no choice but to bring my office to him."
Question marks immediately filled Dominic’s thought bubble. Seeing the confusion in Dominic’s eyes, Axel let out a deep exhale.
"That SUV over there is full of a select few, handpicked by me, from the CEO’s department." Axel pointed his thumb over his shoulder. "They’re still working. Me included. But instead of working in the office, we are outside."
"???"
"For a change." Axel grinned. "Who said corporate slaves cannot hit the road, eh? We have a life!"
Dominic’s lips parted, but his voice couldn’t come out of his throat. For the next one minute, all he could do was stare at his brother. He knew Axel was worried and wanted to help him. After all, Dominic told Axel everything the latter needed to know. He even told Axel how dangerous it was. Though he left out some details behind for his sake, Axel pretty much knew about everything.
However, wasn’t this too much?
"Axel, since when did you start speaking like Moose?" Dominic inquired after a long silence. "Why did I even agree they train you?"
Axel grinned triumphantly. "Because they’re the best and most effective. I only learn from the best because my brother loves me." He leaned to Dominic’s side, fluttering his eyelashes coquettishly.
"This is cute when your sister does it." Dominic flung his arm away. "You, on the other hand, give me goosebumps."
Axel backed away with a frown. "Even so, I’m not going anywhere."
"I’m not asking you to go anywhere." Dominic shook his head. "I know you’ve already made up your mind. Just don’t cry at me when things go from bad to worse. I told you. I’m walking on a narrow road."
"I won’t cry, I promised!" Axel smiled. "Anyway, this is not the way to your new office."
"I have to make a stop."
"Where? I mean, why? I don’t think it’s on your schedule?"
"I was told Ivy was in my office," Dominic explained. "I’m trying to avoid her."
Axel furrowed his brows. "Why are you trying to avoid her?"
"I heard a ridiculous rumor not long ago," he said. "And I don’t want to hear whatever she got to say."
"Oh." Axel rocked his head, making Dominic arch a brow.
Dominic squinted his eyes at his brother, asking, "What did you do?"
"Nothing?" Axel defended, raising even more suspicion. "I swear! I didn’t do anything!"
"Then what did you tell her?"
This time, Axel gasped as a look of horror turned up on his face. Even before he could say anything, Dominic already narrowed down what his little brother told Ivy.
"Fine." Axel conceded, raising his hands. "Just to be clear, she tricked me!"
"What did you tell her?"
"Well, she called me last night, and she told me she wants to send you a congratulatory gift," Axel murmured. "She said she heard that you’d be returning to the office. Also, she wants to send you a thank you gift for saving her. So..."
Axel trailed off as he cleared his throat. "She asked me for your address."
"My current address?" Dominic asked, and Axel nodded. "The one I am staying at?"
Dominic pinched the bridge of his nose.
"I only gave it to her because I trust her!" Axel exclaimed in defense. "I didn’t know you were avoiding her! If only I knew, I wouldn’t even pick up her call. I’ll just let her skin me alive once she catches me!"
"Axel, I told you my situation." Dominic drew a deep breath and sighed. "You know what Dane did to me. You can’t trust anyone. I’m not saying Ivy can’t be trusted, but don’t lower your guard down. Don’t trust anything you see or hear. That’s the only way for me to keep you safe."
"I’m sorry." Axel sighed. "Lesson learned. I’ll do better."
Dominic shook his head once more as he looked at the front. He moved closer and tapped the driver, making the driver remove his earplug.
"Go straight to my office," he said before moving back again. Dominic cast his brother a look. "See? Even I don’t trust them."
Axel’s lips formed into an O-shape, nodding in realization. After a second, he raised his brows and shrugged.
"By the way, what is this rumor you’ve heard that I, the CEO of Lyon Group, haven’t?" he asked curiously. "Did something happen?"
"Nothing yet," Dominic huffed, shifting his eyes to the window. "But something is about to. Ever heard of the calm before the storm? This is the calm."
