Chapter 1108: Ally slash enemy
"Is it true? You and my sister... is it true? You’re going to divorce?"
Axel panted for air as he looked at his brother with wide eyes. His complexion was still pale, as if he rushed here the second he heard about the news.
Dominic assessed his little brother for a while and let out a faint sigh. "Yes," he said. "It’s true that we’ve decided to divorce."
"What?" Axel gasped. "Why? What’s wrong?"
"Nothing’s wrong."
"Impossible!" Axel rushed to the desk, slamming his hands on it. "Bro! Tell me you’re joking. That’s impossible. You two will never divorce. I mean, you just had Miri! Also, Basti does not want his parents to separate. Come on. You’re messing with me, right?"
Axel raised his brows, waiting for his brother to show even the slightest sign it was a mere prank. But alas, Dominic maintained his stoic expression. The dim hope Axel had been clinging to since hearing the divorce slowly shattered the longer his brother’s silence was.
"This doesn’t make sense," he blurted out under his breath. "Why would you... break up?"
"Because Heaven and I should’ve done it over a year ago," Dominic explained, keeping it short and simple. "It was delayed because of many things, but now we’re doing it."
"What?"
"It’s the right thing to do, Axel," Dominic’s tone remained the same, cold and firm. "Staying in a marriage we both didn’t want will only hurt not just us, but also the people around us."
Axel let out a weak scoff while studying his brother’s countenance. "Why... are you being like this?"
"First, you used Silas as your decoy, knowing someone is targeting you. Not only that, but you also used his situation to get away from any responsibilities. We’re still not talking about how my sister almost died during your so-called vacation," Axel listed down in dismay while shaking his head. "You... I don’t know you anymore."
"I’m sorry."
"Sorry?" Axel scorned. "Your lies — bro, just what is going on? Why do you keep lying and hiding things from me? Am I that untrustworthy to you? Is taking your spot in the company still not enough to prove I can take whatever truth you throw at me?"
"Seeing you throw a big tantrum over my divorce is proof the only truths you can accept are things you want to."
Axel couldn’t help but laugh in mockery. "What kind of reaction were you expecting from me? Congratulate you?"
"You once did everything just so we divorce," Dominic pointed out. "I can still remember you begging me to leave her. So, yes. I sort of expected you to congratulate me. Maybe, throw a party."
"You..." Axel shook his head, eyes still on him. "My sister just recovered from a dangerous accident. An accident that YOU enabled. You should’ve stopped her from doing anything reckless, yet you supported it."
Axel pushed himself away from the desk, laughing in mockery once more. "I thought you loved her, but I guess between the two of you, you’re the one who deserves an award. You’re just like Mom and Dad and Grandma. You do things that only serve your self-interest regardless if others get hurt by it."
"God, I hate this family." He shook his head. "I pity Basti and Miri for having a selfish father like you."
With that being said, Axel stormed out of the study room. He slammed the door as hard as he could as if that was his way to tell Dominic how angry he was. Meanwhile, Dominic let out a deep exhale as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
He didn’t say anything even after picking up the phone again.
"You didn’t have to be so mean to him," was Hera’s first comment when she sensed he was back on the line. "There’s a reason Heaven brought up the divorce before you. She’s trying to save you from this kind of confrontation."
"Axel loves and admires you more than anyone," he said, eyes on the door. "I already expected him to react this way whether I file the divorce or Heaven."
"Still, you could’ve told him it’s complicated."
Dominic arched a brow as he leaned his face closer to the phone. "You explain it to him in the future, unless you don’t want to fix our brotherhood. That’s fine with me too."
"I never heard someone take his own relationships as his hostage." Hera clicked her tongue. "What a heartless jerk."
"Axel needs time to process things. I’ll talk to him once he’s calmed down. For now, I don’t have time for that because my life and this entire family’s life are on the line," he stressed each word to make his point across. "Hera, what should we do now?"
"An unknown force is inviting me to join them for a reason they also do not know," he continued. "They bombed my neighbor. God forbid they had planted anything in my villa."
"You don’t plan on leaving?"
"Is there even a point?"
"True." Hera hummed a long tune and then smacked her lips. "My beloved Dominic Zhu, do you remember what you told me back then?"
"Which one?"
"That time you said..." Hera trailed off, making Dominic furrow his brows. It took him a few seconds to remember what she was referring to.
"What about it?" he asked, only to hear her say;
"I’ll take you up on the offer."
Dominic arched a brow. "You mean?"
"I’m going to rob you. I’m taking back my money," she announced. "Keep playing with those aliens and Elliot Dunkell. After all, it’s Elliot’s fault why those people know about you. I guess Dimitri also deserves the credit."
"Hera."
"I don’t need you as Hera Cruel, Dom," she clarified, this time, her voice was firmer. "Trust me. The only time I will need you as Hera Cruel is if it’s a matter of the heart."
She cleared her throat as her expression turned darker. "You are not safe as my ally, but as my enemy, you will be. What do you think?"
A wave of silence hung in the air as neither of them thought about it. Slowly, his eyes sharpened as a dangerous glint flickered across them.
"Very well." Dominic nodded. "I’ll play them, then. Though I got to warn you, this will hurt you."
Hera smirked. "Pain and pleasure work hand in hand."
Dominic let out a chuckle as he shook his head. For the first time in a long time, he could finally breathe. His eyes softened, relaxing his body on the chair.
"Hera," he called quietly.
"Hmm?"
Dominic gazed up at the ceiling and smiled subtly. "I’m gonna fuck you really hard once this works."
"..." — wow.
