Chapter 1107: We’re like Bonnie and Clyde.
Minutes ago...
Dominic sat quietly in the study, eyes on Gray’s phone. His eyes were sharp, hands linked in front of him, and his mind was deep in thought.
’When will she call?’he wondered. ’She didn’t lie, did she?’
A huge part of him told him Hera was lying just to get away from any more conversation with him. But the other part of him believed she found a great idea that could work better for them. Perhaps he was just being hopeful, but he wanted to cling to this hope.
"Hera," he whispered, his jaw tightening. "I hope nothing dangerous happened on her side."
Foolish as it may sound, Dominic was genuinely hopeful that she hadn’t contacted him because she was busy. His anxiety slowly peaked every passing minute that she hadn’t called him back. He couldn’t help but wonder if she was alright or if something terrible happened.
"No," he breathed out, closing his eyes as he took a deep breath. "She will be fine."
Or would she?
To be fair, Dominic’s longing for his beloved Hera was nothing compared to his worry about her. Hence, letting her go or doing what she told him to do was a hundred times more challenging. Even if he clung to the hope she would return, a part of him was afraid she might die before she could even come back.
"Hera," he whispered, burying his face in his linked hands. "Just give me something that will hint that you’re okay."
A message or a voicemail was fine. Dominic just wanted something. Even a dot would suffice. So long as he knew she was still alive. He had been waiting for her to call back for hours now; he even had lost track of time.
"She shouldn’t have said she’ll keep in touch if..." Dominic trailed off as the phone began vibrating. Lifting his gaze, his eyes fell on the screen. It was the same unknown number.
A smile of relief immediately washed over his distressed face. It felt like a torn was plucked out of his throat now that she was calling.
"So, she wasn’t bluffing?" he muttered, picking up the phone to answer it. But alas, instead of answering it immediately, Dominic hung his head low and took a few deep breaths. "She’ll be the death of me, for sure."
He patted his chest, calming his racing heart before answering the call. Just as his lips parted, Hera’s voice immediately came through.
"I’m stupid."
Deep lines appeared between Dominic’s brows. Was she talking to him? Or was she talking to someone else and didn’t realize he picked up the call? All those questions in his mind immediately cleared up when she continued;
"You’re the only one I ever loved and will ever love, the only person I’d have sex with, and someone I’d like to grow old together! Also, I really missed you!" Hera confessed in one go as if she had to say this before she changed her mind.
Hera took another deep breath and closed her eyes. When she reopened them, she added;
"You were right. I needed you — I wanted you. If there’s anyone who could save me, that would be you. Only you." She paused again as she lowered her eyes. "I’m scared — terrified, Dom. I’m terrified at the fact that I’m terrified. I ended us because that was the right thing to do; I still think it’s the right thing to do."
The corner of her lips twitched as she didn’t give herself plenty of time to pause. "If I’m going back in time, I will still make the same decision I did back there. You might be the love of my life, and that will never change. But I can’t and won’t accept it if something bad happens to you because of me."
"I know," Dominic replied quietly. "I know your intentions. I’m well aware of the reasons you left, Hera. And even if I want to ask you to take me back and even if it annoys me, I’m starting to come to terms with it. Not saying I’ve already made peace with it, but I’m hopeful."
He lowered his head and massaged his forehead. "Is this the idea you thought of earlier? Well, congratulations for putting my hopes up."
"I’m getting hurt with your sarcasm," she murmured while he closed his eyes, feeling his head throb painfully. "You’ve become really mean. Do you know Joker is here with me and is looking at me as if he wants to cut off my tongue?"
"If that is all you want to say, then I’ll hang up," Dominic cleared his throat. "Take care, Hera."
"Did you really think I’d give you false hope?" she asked before he could hang up on her. "I’d rather break your heart honestly than play with you.
Dominic slowly placed his phone closer to his ear again. He didn’t say anything.
"What I said is nothing but the truth." Her voice lowered as it sounded more solemn and sincere. "If it’s just me, you wouldn’t hear a word from me. But there’s some development which I didn’t anticipate."
"Development... like?"
"Like me getting jealous because you’re so gorgeous you’re taking the spotlight from me?"
"?" Dominic knitted his brows, confused.
"I heard you were attacked," she muttered. "Were you hurt?"
"They attacked my neighbor, not me."
"And why is that?"
"Because..." Dominic trailed off and leaned back against the chair. "She doesn’t want to kill me, I think."
"She?" Hera arched a brow. ’I guessed it, right? It was the Madam’s doing?’
"Do you know this person? Is she one of your enemies?" he asked because, honestly, there were too many questions in his mind.
"No, I don’t. But whoever it is, I’m sure we’ll not get along." She hissed. "Does she know your connections to me?"
"I don’t know yet."
"What are your assumptions?"
"She doesn’t... but close," he explained. "She thinks I’m after you. I’m glad I made it look like that. Good thing I made that decision."
Hera didn’t speak for a long time and glanced at Joker. The latter already put on his headsets to save himself from secondhand embarrassment and the dog food she shamelessly threw without a heads up.
"Dom, we make a pretty good team, right?" she remarked, cupping her face leisurely. "We’re like Bonnie and Clyde. I think we’re really a match made in heaven."
"They were shot over hundreds of bullets."
Hera cleared her throat. "Dom, listen to me..." she trailed off when she suddenly heard a noise from the other end of the line. Before she could wonder, she heard Axel’s hysterical voice.
"Is it true?" Axel’s voice shook. "You and my sister... is it true? You’re going to divorce?"
’Uh oh.’ Hera gulped and pursed her lips. ’I guess our first child won’t be happy if we break the news he’s gonna have a stepmom.’
