Chapter 1106: I’m stupid

"Is that really necessary?" Joker was cupping his face, staring at the door as soon as he heard it creak.

Hera smiled as she slowly closed the door behind her, shrugging nonchalantly. "How well can he curse?"

"He’s pathetic." Joker shook his head, watching her sit on the chair beside him. "I feel sorry for him. Dude sounds like he would go straight to the church and drink some holy water."

"Haha."

"Why are you doing this to him?"

"Because I don’t want him to feel sorry for me, so I won’t feel guilty if I suddenly use him as a human shield," she explained playfully. "Also, he will start being careful from on. He thinks he’s already careful, but not careful enough. Practice makes things perfect."

"You like the man, you’re not going to throw him in a Tiger’s Den."

Hera glanced at him, standing up from the chair. She dragged it closer to him, sitting back on it with its backrest in front of her.

"You changed," she pointed out. "What did you see when you were hovering over life and death?"

"Sadly, I didn’t experience some astral projection." Joker shrugged. "It would have been nice if I did."

Hera smirked, stretching her hand to ruffle his hair. Her action prompted him to back away, looking at her in disbelief.

"What’s that just now?" he inquired in horror. "I swear I didn’t teach your son to access pornography. It just so happens we were playing the same game. I need a better duo, so I taught him a trick or two."

"This is not about Basti and I’m not angry at you. How can I blame you for getting my son’s affection? It’s not like you’re the first to compete for the Best Uncle title," she quipped, making him scrunch up his nose. "I mean, if I’m going to be angry at you and Gray, I should also be angry at myself too. I taught him first."

"Why are you acting like this?" Joker squinted his eyes. "What happened out there?"

"Nothing? You can say, I just feel sorry for you?"

"If you feel sorry for me, you would’ve kicked me out," Joker pointed out the obvious. "Did you and Dominic make up?"

"No?" Hera shrugged but then paused. "Not yet."

"Why? What gave you the idea that you can add that ’yet’ in that sentence?"

"The information you held back from Wolf?"

"Damn that old fart!"

"Wolf knows I hate surprises." She chuckled, resting her arms over the backrest of the chair in front of her. She then lowered her head until her chin was on her arms, eyes on the multiple screens before them. "What’s with that?"

"Seriously." Ignoring her query, Joker kept his attention on her. "What’s up? Did you realize that it’s easier to burn the world than leave your husband behind?"

Hera cast him a sidelong glance. "Yes... maybe?"

"Dominic just made it to the top of the list men should envy," he commented, setting his attention to the screen. But before he could get down to business, Hera spoke again.

"It’s not planned, but thanks to Elliot, I got an idea." Joker slowly looked back at her upon hearing her remark. "Dom is too deep into this, but not into deep with me or the Reapers."

"You’re saying...?"

"I’m saying it’s easy to just burn the world and not to let a small flame touch him if he’s close by." Hera winked, jerking her chin to the monitor. "What do you have there?"

"Can’t say I fully understand, but whatever. Your metaphors are pathetic. You should try harder next time," he replied, wheeling his chair closer to the desk to show her his discovery. "Thanks to Basti’s ultimate move to shut down an enemy, he uncovered every hidden connection that had been leeching on the CIA’s main system, including ours."

Joker started explaining everything to Hera, his fingers running across the keyboard. Multiple files and information started popping up on the screen every passing second.

As he explained, Hera couldn’t help but glance at his hands. She pressed her lips into a thin line, lifting her gaze to his side profile.

"Would you cry and throw a tantrum if I made an insensitive comment about your hands?" she blurted out, putting a halt to Joker’s explanation.

"Are you listening?" he deadpanned. "Or should we talk about arranging a funeral for my severed fingers?"

"Pace yourself," she returned. "You don’t have to maintain your usual speed. It takes time."

"Can we go back to the important discussion? Or should we continue this one that won’t benefit anyone aside from those who want us to waste time?"

"It’s not a waste of time. Your role in this place is much more important than mine. You can make as many mistakes as you want, but know that also means putting everyone’s lives at risk," explained Hera before pointing at one of the monitors again. "Since you’re telling me all of this, I assumed you found out a clue about the people I’m dealing with. Anyone from the Interpol?"

"Hera, the Interpol, and Central work hand in hand most of the time. Even if there were corrupts in the General Assembly, they do not need to put a parasite in their system to get information."

"Right. Unless they’re crazy?"

"But this one will surely interest you." Joker ran his fingers across the keyboard while explaining. "Before the CIA completely cleared out all the parasites in their system, I happened to cling to the other viruses and sucked their data. Some of them were sort of interesting, but one particular one caught my attention."

"There is no data in it. I suspect everything it absorbs gets deleted right after. So what I did is double-checked the other parasites." His tone consistently increased in excitement, filling her with all the details and procedures he did to uncover one big discovery. "In other words, all those parasitic leeches in the CIA’s system except ours..."

"Came from the same source?" Hera guessed, watching Joker face her with a grin.

"Exactly!" he exclaimed. "It kind of makes sense. I mean, the numbers of ’people’ getting info from the CIA can simply show how they are so incompetent for a big agency such as them. But we both know they’re not incompetent or lousy. We spent day and night for almost a year creating a parasite to infiltrate their system. It took one genius and one mad woman and an old fart’s help to make an opening."

In simple terms, there were only two parasites in the said agency. The Reapers and these other ones.

"Did you find the location?" she asked solemnly and when Joker smirked, she knew he did.

"Good job." Hera nodded in satisfaction while taking out her phone and the chip from her jacket. "Here’s the chip I found on Elliot’s phone. Run it. You might confirm a thing or two about your discoveries."

Joker picked up the chip on the desk, using his chair to glide from corner to corner.

"I’m still running that chip you retrieved from that guy you took from the Cartel," he muttered while studying the chip in his index. "I’m sure this is the same chip. I might—"

"I’m stupid."

Joker furrowed his brow and intuitively looked in Hera’s direction, only to see her talking on the phone. Hera remained in the same spot, holding the phone, her face determined.

"And you’re the only one I ever loved and will ever love, the only person I’d have sex with, and someone I’d like to grow old together!" she continued in one go. "Also, I really missed you!"

"..."

Not only Joker but also Dominic, who was on the other end of the call, was rendered speechless by her sudden confession, which was also her opening remark.
