Chapter 1101: No trust

[Hours later...]

"Tell me." Wolf broke the silence in the room he was in, twisting his chair to face the man sitting on the other desk full of monitors. "It’s not any of them that taught Basti how to infiltrate someone’s tight security."

"Do you know how hard it is to type with a few fingers?" Joker stretched his head from one side to another, ignoring Wolf’s insinuation. "Not to mention fighting someone when all my body aches?"

"Hera will kill you."

"Or she might not." Joker slapped the desk, facing Wolf this time. "How can she kill me when I sacrificed my limbs for her?"

"Unbelievable." Wolf frowned. "Perhaps you might want to reflect on the situation. Hera left the man of her life and her children. Losing another person doesn’t sound so bad at all."

Joker smirked. "You left your wife and kids for this mission," he remarked, refocusing his attention on the multiple screens before him. "But then again, even if you didn’t, your wife will leave you and your kid doesn’t know you."

"My kid knows about me."

"Too bad for him." Joker shrugged. "I think you should worry about them."

"They’re safe," Wolf remarked. "No one knows about them."

"Hah..." Joker rocked his head mildly. "Are you not worried about them?"

"She left me before we can even go deeper."

"Having a child together isn’t deep enough? That’s amazing. Did you use the CIA’s prowess to keep their identities hidden?"

"The CIA hadn’t proved anything, though I’m fired." Wolf shrugged. "Moreover, people won’t waste their time in a lackey when the demoness is wreaking havoc out there."

Wolf paused a little and let out a bitter laugh. "She gets all the attention... and I can’t help but think she’s doing it again for us."

"Did she ever make a move without thinking of anyone else but herself?" Joker commented sarcastically. "Also, the little master was an honest coincidence. He’s just logged on at the wrong time — or maybe the perfect time."

"Losing a connection to the CIA is not perfect, boy."

Joker cocked his head back and looked at Wolf with a smirk on his face. Seeing that arrogant look on his face, Wolf squinted his eyes.

"What are you not telling me?" asked Wolf suspiciously. "I don’t like your puzzles, Joker."

"But Hera loves puzzles," Joker quipped. "I’ll tell her because I’m scared you’d get all the credits."

Wolf clicked his tongue and shook his head. Just before he could retort to Joker’s obnoxious accusations, he felt his personal phone vibrate in his chest. Wolf slipped his hand inside his suit pocket, furrowing his brows as soon as he recognized the caller.

Bear.

"Is that her?" Joker inquired, knowing their connection was back. "Let me talk to her."

"No." Wolf’s tone changed as he faced him. "It’s Bernard."

"Bear?" Joker frowned. "What does he want?"

"It’s either about the little master or something else. At this point, I hope it’s the former," Wolf muttered before answering the call. "Anything else aside from that is bad news. My hunch tells me."

As soon as those words rolled out of Wolf’s tongue, he picked up the call.

"Bad news?" Wolf greeted solemnly. "Make it short, Bernard. We both know we can’t have chats about how we ruined our marriage."

Wolf’s slightly sarcastic expression slowly faded as he listened to the other end of the line. Meanwhile, Joker studied Wolf’s expression for a moment. Wolf was quite playful for his age — always acted younger than his age. However, Joker knew that look on his face.

Therefore, instead of waiting for what Bear was telling Wolf, he started working on his computer. Despite his missing fingers, Joker worked at the same speed. The only problem was that he kept messing things up and making mistakes and typos. Hence, he slowed down upon realizing he was using more time to repeat a code than successfully inputting it.

After a minute, different slides, cameras, small articles, and some maps appeared on the screens before him. Joker simply glanced at them, typing a few more times before a local news report appeared on the screen.

"Hah." Joker leaned back, snapping his eyes back to Wolf. At this point, Wolf was already putting his phone back in his suit. "They were attacked?"

"Dominic’s neighbor," Wolf clarified. "He was threatened, though."

"I assumed that’s the case." Joker nodded. "Did he tell you who it was?"

"Dominic wouldn’t tell Bear, but instead, told the old man to keep watching Dimitri." Wolf shrugged. "He called because he was worried. Can you put some eyes on the villa? We need to keep them under surveillance."

"A surveillance won’t help, Wolf," Joker argued in a knowing tone. "Even if we see what’s going on over there, we can’t do anything unless we’re there or close."

"Do you have any good idea?"

Joker shrugged. "Tell Hera."

"And then, what? She comes there and saves the day?" Wolf mocked. "She left because she knows the consequences —"

"And now Dominic is receiving death threats right after his neighbor’s house exploded." Joker pointed at his screen, eyes on him. "Do you know the entire family died? Actually, there’s one survivor, and it was the eldest son. He was in cram school, but if he wasn’t, he would’ve died too."

Joker snapped his eyes as he sported a knowing look. "Doesn’t that look like a result caused by Hera or someone who’s after her?"

Wolf opened his mouth, but then shut up. He glanced at one of the screens in front of Joker, huffing heavily.

"He’s too deep to back out, huh?" Wolf muttered. "She’s wrong."

"Who knows?" Joker also set his eyes on the screen before him. "Not only did he get Hera’s money and was burning every bit of it shamelessly, but Dominic’s connections and influence are worthy of anyone’s attention. He’s a humble man, but it’s impossible not to notice him."

"Joker, what are you not telling me?" Wolf asked again, knowing Joker wouldn’t be this nonchalant and calm if he knew this was all bad. "Hiding something now won’t be helpful."

"Revealing it before her permission won’t be, either." Joker smacked his lips and smiled. "My information is solely for the cause of my misery. What she’s going to do with it, I don’t care. But I don’t trust any of you."
