Chapter 1100: Clear the path for you
Chapter 1100: Clear the path for you
When Dominic went back, everyone was already packing. Horror was evident in many of his servant’s faces, but he had to return to his study to think. Miracle and Sebastian were with Gray and Princess. Thus, he knew there was nothing he should worry about. His children were safer with them instead with him.
Sitting behind the desk, Dominic gazed at the calling card before him. The officer’s remarks, Hera’s words, and Elliot’s offer kept replaying in his mind simultaneously.
[Do you want Hera Cruel? I’ll give her to you, Mr. Zhu.]
[I’ll keep in touch. In the meantime, make sure Dimitri is alive. Also, you might want to get out of there.]
[Someone’s just very interested in you. This is simply to get your attention. I hope you make the call tonight.]
Elliot, Hera, and this anonymous person reached out to him all on the same day. Although Hera didn’t intentionally call him but Gray, Elliot and this mysterious person who bombed an innocent home surely wasn’t a coincidence.
"They bombed my neighbor," he muttered. "Did it set off when I picked up the call?"
It could be.
Why?
A short and mocking laugh escaped him, eyes glinting. "Did they think I’d feel guilty about it?" His sharp eyes fell on the calling card once more.
If his hypothesis was correct, then this person who was trying to get his attention didn’t know much. At least, they didn’t know what his real connection with Hera was. The only reason he could think of why this happened of all time was because of Elliot.
"Was his phone bugged?" he wondered. "Or did he tell anyone about it?"
At this point, Dominic would be foolish to believe Elliot’s intentions. Hera might’ve trusted the man, but Dominic couldn’t take chances. This was no longer a problem of the underworld, but it also dragged political interest and self-interest.
Many were at stake already.
And there was no other way to settle it unless only one of the participants in this deadly game stood.
"Even so, I can’t just conclude without knowing," he told himself, reaching for the home telephone. He dialed the number on the calling card, listening to it ring several times. He waited.
On the last ring, the call was picked up. Silence immediately ensued in the line as neither Dominic nor the other person on the line spoke.
"If you’re the one who reached out, isn’t it given you speak first?" Dominic furrowed his brows as a man’s voice came on the line. "Mr. Zhu, you reached out quite sooner than I expected."
"After that explosion, I assumed it was an indicator to drop any pretenses and politeness," Dominic remarked coldly. "I must admit, it surprised me. I didn’t see that coming."
The man chuckled. "We thought we needed to do something grand to get your attention."
"That’s quite grand, indeed. I wonder why you have to go out of the way just to get my attention?" Dominic let out a short chuckle. "I don’t think I’m that worthy."
"It’s also a question we have, Mr. Zhu. Why do we need your attention?" the man on the line mused. "What is it that you have that we need your attention? To be honest, we don’t know yet."
Dominic leaned back in the swivel chair. "Why not ask your boss?" he suggested, observing the sudden quietness in the line. "I’m sure your boss knows."
There was a prolonged silence in the line after Dominic’s remarks. The latter, on the other hand, was sure he guessed it correctly. Whoever this man was talking to him wasn’t the person who called the shots.
After another full minute of silence, a woman’s chuckle filled the line.
’It’s a woman?’Dominic arched a brow, not expecting that.
"I’m surprised you figured it out sooner than I expected, Mr. Zhu," the woman mused. "How did you know?"
"He has a bad tone." He shrugged. "Tell him he needed more conviction next time."
"Haha. No wonder you’re respected in the business world and also managed to capture the public’s heart."
"What do you want from me?" Dominic squinted his eyes. "I do not have plenty of time for chit-chat."
"Won’t you ask me who I am?"
"I’m not interested in who you are. I don’t think it’s relevant, nor do I think you’d happily reveal yourself," Dominic pointed out, making the other person on the other end of the line smirk in amusement. "However, I do mind getting my time wasted."
"Straight to the point," the woman chuckled. "I like you."
"And so were the tens of millions who voted for me."
"Very well. Since I don’t want to waste your time, I won’t humor you. I want you to work with me," the woman offered without beating around the bush. "Though I have a few questions, we can arrange some of that in the future."
"Work with you?" Dominic remarked. "Or for you? Those are two different things."
"It’s the former."
"That’s quite the offer, considering you bombed my neighbor. Don’t tell me you’re expecting me to jump in joy after receiving a threat?"
"I went a little overboard, but I assume you’d understand."
"I do not."
The woman smiled. "I recognize your talent and capabilities. Although I find it strange that some Reapers are working for you and had questions about why you were working with them the past few months, I want to believe you have your reasons," she casually explained, making him aware she knew things. "I’ll be honest with you. Any answer aside from yes is terrible."
"If you didn’t force me to speak, I would’ve let you off. However, you forced me to talk to you," she continued. "I was simply curious what made you special for Elliot to see you as his beacon and why you’re after Hera Cruel. I could’ve left you alone after sating curiosity. But well, we’re already in here and I’m satisfied with everything I heard so far. You got better character than Dimitri."
Dominic remained quiet, observing the woman’s remarks and voice. "You never planned to leave me alone."
The woman chuckled but said nothing.
"You want me to replace your henchman, Dimitri?"
"Dimitri is never my henchman. He’s a pawn," the woman clarified. "A useless pawn and I don’t want pawns anymore."
"What’s your offer?"
"Everything you want. Power and connections that will make you untouchable. I’m sure you don’t need money, but I can offer you protection," she dawdled. "I can clear the path for you, Mr Zhu."
"And in return?" he arched a brow. "You want me to clear your path for you?"
The woman didn’t answer, but she smirked. "I’ll let you know what I want in return in the future. For now, I want you to think about it. Also, you don’t have to leave your villa. I’ll find you wherever you are and when I do, my offer doesn’t stand anymore."
