Chapter 1098: Too deep into this
Meanwhile...
"Ugh..." Dane opened his weary eyes, his vision blurry, but he could see a silhouette of a person standing beside him. "Who... are you?"
He squinted his eyes, droplets of sweat forming on his forehead. He blinked and blinked, trying to see the face. But alas, it was too dark and his vision was too blurry to even guess who it was. However, he could see his movements.
Dane narrowed his eyes more, watching the man holding a syringe and a small bottle. The man then flicked the syringe before turning his head to him.
"A doctor?" he muttered in a daze, reaching out to the man’s clothes. "Are you... a doctor?"
The man didn’t speak, but Dane knew he was looking at him.
"No," whispered Dane, shaking his head mildly. "No, you’re not..."
Despite his blurry vision, he could see the man take the tube of his IV. For all Dane knew, he was being looked at in the prison’s infirmary. A place perfect for an assassination. With that thought in mind, Dane wriggled his arms but his other wrist was cuffed to the bed.
"No," he blurted out, shaking his head mildly. "Don’t... I can... I can fix this. Give me a... chance. Don’t... I..."
Slowly, his eyes felt heavy as they slowly closed. His body relaxed on the bed, and in no time, all he knew was darkness.
"Is he having a hallucination?" Suddenly, Bear’s voice was heard in the room.
The person, standing next to Dane wearing a white lab coat gazed at him. "That’s not a hallucination. That’s him being conscious," he explained. "He knew someone was out there to kill him. We’ll have to keep him sedated, or else he’ll lose control of himself again."
Bear let out a deep exhale, folding his arms under his chest. "I see," he remarked, nodding at the doctor, who was looking after Dane’s well-being. "Thank you."
The doctor simply nodded before walking out of the prison’s private primary care room. Meanwhile, Bear approached the bed. He gazed down at the man; Dane had an eyepatch as he had lost an eye, his arm and legs were cast, and bandages were around his head and body.
Ever since Dane was arrested, Dominic insisted this guy would be treated in prison. After all, Dominic didn’t want to risk Dane escaping. It was better if Dane was in here, where he would be monitored by the officers and some of Dominic’s men.
"We still hadn’t figured out who he was talking to," Bear muttered, taking out his phone from his suit to call Dominic. When the line connected, he wasted no time in reporting. "He’s still the same. They would have to keep him sedated to avoid stitching him up again."
"Anyone suspicious in there?"
"Everything is suspicious in prison, Dom," Bear lowered his head, eyes on the badly beaten Dane. "Anything else she told you to do?"
"She’ll keep in touch."
"Dom," Bear called solemnly. "If Hera had an idea, it means it might not be good for you."
"I know."
"She left because of you and the children," Bear stressed. "You’re a smart man — you and Hera are amazing individuals but... with love, do you think it won’t get in the way? Whenever you’re together, you end up making a mistake or two. I’m not saying you never made a mistake in your life, but the slightest mistake in here will cost you, your wife, and your children’s lives."
A moment of silence dominated the line as neither of them spoke after Bear.
"Are you saying I have to back out?" Dominic whispered calmly. "Now, of all times? When she’s willing to listen to me?"
"I’m saying you think about it."
"I already did, Bear. Every second, every minute of every day." Dominic took and deep breath and huffed it out. "I know everything you said was out of pure intention. If the problem is making a mistake, then I just don’t make one."
Bear’s mouth parted, but he ended up shutting them again.
"She’s my wife, Bear," Dominic continued after a moment. "Believe what you want, but she’s my children’s mother."
"And you’re willing to do everything at the cost of your children’s lives?"
"No." Dominic shook his head, staring at the family photo on his home desk. He leaned forward and picked it up. "I am willing to do anything for my family at the cost of my life."
"You and Hera... are making a mistake."
"No." Dominic shook his head, putting down the family photo face down. "We were never a mistake. Keep your eye on Dimitri. He can’t die just yet."
With that being said, Dominic ended the call. Bear, who was on the other end, slowly put down his phone, eyes on Dane. Another sigh escaped Bear, but slowly, the corner of his mouth curled up.
"Vicenzo and Felice will rest in peace," he muttered. "Their precious daughter is loved just as she deserves."
*******
[ZHU VILLA]
Dominic leaned back against the swivel chair, rubbing his bottom lips with the side of his index. He glanced at the crib near his bed where Miracle was sleeping, jaw tightening. As he was deep in thought, he heard a phone ring. Glancing at the phone he had been using, he realized the call wasn’t coming from there.
The phone continued to ring until his eyes fell on the home telephone just right beside his computer. He furrowed his brows, reaching for the telephone, and then paused.
’She will not call me in here,’ he thought. ’Neither would Mr. Dunkell.’
If Hera would call him, she would call Gray’s phone. Elliot, on the other hand, would reach him on his personal phone. Receiving calls in the middle of the night in his home wasn’t all that strange. What made it strange was that he received a call from Elliot and then Hera on the same day.
Even so, Dominic held the telephone and picked it up. However, as soon as he did, his chair shook as a deafening explosion erupted in the villa.
