Chapter 1078: Does mommy hate me?

Chapter 1078: Does mommy hate me?

After spending his time gathering his thoughts in the shower, Dominic quietly made his way to his son’s room. When he reached the door, he cautiously opened the door and peeked inside. His eyes immediately caught Sebastian seated in front of the study table.

’Look at him,’Dominic thought, reminded of what their son was like before Hera came into their life.

The door was already open before Dominic knocked quietly. "Can I come in?"

Sebastian looked back at him and then returned his focus to the notebook he was writing on. Dominic let out a shallow breath, stepping in as quietly as he could. When Dominic reached the study table, he smiled subtly at what seemed like a math problem his son was solving.

"This one here," Dominic pointed at the other equation, propping his bottom against the edge of the study table. "You’ve used a confusing solution. Hence, the numbers aren’t adding up."

Sebastian pressed his lips, staring at the equation he scratched because he couldn’t solve it properly. "I was trying to do the solution my mommy told me to do."

Dominic smiled bitterly as he whispered, "She’s wrong."

"I know she is wrong. She only likes addition and subtraction. Anything more than that makes her brain bleed. That’s what she said." Sebastian looked up at his father. "I’m not trying to get the answer, but trying to find out if there’s a simpler way to solve this without making her head hurt."

"I see." Dominic let out a weak chuckle, nodding in understanding. "Well, you can try to. She’ll try to understand it. Only this time, she’ll probably have a nosebleed once you start explaining."

Sebastian peeled his gaze from his father and started scribbling in his book once more.

"Basti," Dominic called after a while. "I heard you hadn’t had your snacks. Want me to make you one? I was in a rush to go home, so I couldn’t eat on the way."

"Will we be less sad if we eat together?" the little master asked while writing.

"You were sad?" Dominic furrowed his brows, tilting his head to the side. "That’s an insensitive question. Of course, you’d feel lonely because we haven’t been home lately."

Sebastian remained silent.

"I don’t know if eating with me will make you less sad, but I’m sure it won’t make you more sad." Dominic reached out for his head, ruffling his son’s hair. "Come on. We can also watch a movie while we’re at it or just talk about your math problems. I’ll help."

Sebastian stopped scribbling but didn’t move from his seat. Instead, he stared at his notebook while deep in thought. Seeing his lack of reaction, Dominic let out another deep sigh and squatted down a little to match his son’s sitting height.

"Basti," Dominic called. "If you don’t want to watch a movie or eat snacks with me, do you want to play outside?"

Dominic paused, studying his son’s somber side profile. "Or do you want to visit Mommy?" he suggested, knowing this would cheer him up. But alas, Sebastian didn’t cheer up.

Instead, Sebastian bit his bottom lips, facing him to reveal the tears forming in the corner of his eyes. The little master sniffed, holding his tears back as to what he thought he should be doing.

"Basti," Dominic panicked. "Did I say something wrong? Or are you hurt anywhere?"

"Daddy..." Sebastian’s voice quivered. "... does Mommy... hate me?"

"What? No! Mommy doesn’t hate you. There’s no way she would. She..." Dominic trailed off as a sudden tension rose in his throat. "She loves you so much. Your mommy and I love you so much."

"Then, does she not love you anymore?" the little master hiccuped, looking at his father curiously.

Deep lines appeared between Dominic’s brows, watching his son hold back his sob. Hard as it may, Dominic offered a reassuring smile, as he said,

"Of course not," he whispered gently, cupping Sebastian’s face. His eyes softened as a layer of tears coated his eyes. Not that Dominic was lying. Hera loved them with all of her heart she would rather die than put them in danger.

It wasn’t hate, but love, which was why the pain was a hundred times worse.

"If she doesn’t hate us, then why did she leave us?" Sebastian followed up. "Did we do something to upset her?"

This time, Dominic’s breath hitched. He froze in an instant, staring at Sebastian with wide eyes.

"Basti, what are you..." Dominic let out an awkward laugh, a little confused. "Your mommy —"

"You went to her, didn’t you?" Sebastian continued. "You went to find her, but you came home alone. That means she isn’t coming back anymore. Whose fault is it, Daddy?"

The little master’s face crumbled as the tears he kept holding back poured down his adorable face. He sobbed like any other child, frustrated and hurt.

All Dominic could do was pull his son into his embrace, rendered speechless. "Basti," he whispered, his heart thudding against his chest. "How did you..."

There were myriads of questions that hovered in Dominic’s mind after hearing his son’s line of question. However, all of that vanished because of one fact. Hera and Sebastian might not be biologically related, but their hearts were connected.

Just like how Dominic immediately knew Heaven was back in her body, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Sebastian noticed. After all, they loved her just as deeply as Hera loved them. Dominic and Hera were husband and wife, but for Sebastian, she was his mother.

"I’m sorry." A tear rolled down Dominic’s eyes while comforting his son. "It’s not your fault, Basti. It will never be your fault."

A forced smile appeared in between his tears, rubbing Sebastian’s back. Dominic told himself to stay strong and act as the father he should be in front of his children. He didn’t plan to break down more than he already did. After all, he was so sure the pain he had to endure was something his children would never bear. Heaven was still with them, and they would never find out about Hera.

But now, Dominic couldn’t say that anymore.

"Basti, listen to me." Dominic slowly pulled away from his son, looking him straight in the eye. "Remember that mommy is a super spy?"

Sebastian hiccuped, nodding.

"She is on a mission," Dominic smiled subtly, nodding at his son reassuringly. "So, she has to leave for a while."

"To... save the world?" the little master hiccuped again, and Dominic nodded.

"Yes. She’ll be back. Not now, but I’m sure she will." Dominic patted his son’s head. "And once she does, we’ll throw a welcoming party."

It might be cruel of Dominic to give his son a false sense of hope. However, what else could he do? What was the right thing to do or say at this moment? To be honest, Dominic had no idea. He wasn’t prepared for this. Hence, he only thought to give the same sliver of hope he had been clinging to his son.

It might disappoint both of them in the future, but at least they get to live for now.

’Even just for the present,’ Dominic whispered in his heart. ’We have something to cling on to.’
