Chapter 1077: Life happened
Days later...
Sebastian sat by the window, staring at the gates of the villa they had been staying at for quite some time now. The snacks he had on the table weren’t touched and the book he should be reading was left open on his lap.
"Basti?" Gray called as he returned to the living area after running an errand. He paused, glanced at the food on the table, and then back to Sebastian.
A deep sigh escaped him, marching quietly to the set of couches. When he plopped his butt down on the long couch, Gray leaned forward. He rested his arms on his legs, eyes on the little master.
"Do you want to play outside, little master?" asked Gray, although he knew Sebastian was not that type of kid. At least, Sebastian preferred playing outside with his mother and father.
"Uncle Gray, when will my daddy come home?" Sebastian wondered quietly, eyes fixed on the window.
"I heard his plane already landed this morning." Gray smiled. "He’ll be here any minute."
"Will he be with my mommy?"
"Uh." Gray paused and pondered. "Your mommy still needs to stay in the hospital. So, I don’t think she will be with him. Don’t worry. Uncle Princess is with her, so she’ll be fine. Do you want me to call her so you can talk to your mom?"
Sebastian quickly looked at Gray before setting his eyes back to the window. "Later."
"Are you sure?"
"Mhm. She’s probably resting, so I don’t want to disturb her."
"Ah." Gray bit his tongue, stopping himself from telling the little master he would never disturb his mother. However, he couldn’t. That woman in the hospital was the real Heaven Liu and not Hera anymore.
Although Heaven would now answer the call and talk to Sebastian via video call, she wouldn’t stay in the line for a long time. She also never initiated a call. So, Gray had to ask Princess if it was the perfect time before making the phone call.
’Moreover, Heaven almost died a few days ago,’Gray thought, recalling the assassination attempt Heaven faced a few days ago. ’I’m sure she’s still in shock.’
"They’re here." Sebastian perked up as soon as he saw a black sedan stopped in front of the gates. He curiously stretched his neck, watching a person get out of the front passenger seat. He watched the man open the backseat, and then his father came into view.
However, Sebastian didn’t stop staring curiously upon seeing Dominic. Instead, he waited for another person to come out. Much to his disappointment, the bodyguard who opened the door for Dominic simply bent down for a second as if to get something inside before closing it.
"Your dad is here!" Gray cheered as he saw Dominic approaching the gates. "Let’s go, welcome —"
Gray halted when Sebastian closed the book on his lap and then jumped off the couch. Instead of heading to the entrance, Sebastian quietly made his way to the stairs.
"Little Master..." Gray called worriedly, eyes on the little boy’s retreating figure.
"Uncle Gray, if my dad came looking for me, tell him I’m studying." Sebastian stopped and looked back at Gray. "And that I’m glad to see him."
After saying his piece, Sebastian resumed his steps to the second floor. Gray couldn’t say anything but watch the little master. Even before Sebastian could reach the second floor, the door was already opened. Gray turned to the entrance, only to see Dominic loosening his tie with Bear following behind him.
"Boss." Gray slowly stood, tilting his head a little down. "Welcome back."
"Where’s Basti?"
"Uh." Gray cleared his throat and peeked up at Dominic. "He’s in his room."
"I see." Dominic didn’t plan to stay longer as he marched toward the stairs. However, just as he reached the first step, he stopped.
"Boss," called Gray. "The little master said if you came looking for him, he wants you to know he’s studying and that he’s glad to see you back."
Dominic quietly stared at Gray, rocking his head. He took a deep breath and forced a subtle smile.
"Is that so?" he remarked. "And Miri? Where is she?"
"With Miriam in the playroom."
"I see." Dominic nodded in understanding. "Give me the detailed report of what happened in the hospital in a bit."
With that being said, Dominic turned his back and took the stairs. But instead of going in the direction where Sebastian’s room was, he headed to the master’s bedroom.
"Bear," Gray called quietly, eyes on the second floor. "Is it just my imagination? Dominic, I understand why he’s acting like this. But Basti... no, I mean, this place... it feels kinda empty, don’t you think?"
Gray slowly shifted his eyes to Bear, who was still standing a few steps from the front door. Bear had his eyes on the second floor, sighing heavily.
"Or the people here were incomplete," Bear muttered as he returned Gray’s gaze. "Report to Dominic in an hour. He’ll probably shower first and rest for a bit."
"It’s already done. The report."
"Then wait for him to finish." With that being said, Bear turned around to leave.
"Where are you going?" asked Gray with furrowed brows. "Don’t tell me you’ve already sent your resignation letter?"
Bear cast his eyes down and this moment of silence was something Gray didn’t like.
"Bear, is it because Hera —"
"I’m staying," Bear clarified before he jumped to a conclusion. He slowly turned his head, facing Gray squarely. "I can’t leave Dominic now because if I do, I’m afraid he’ll just continue to fall apart. He needs someone big enough to cover him from everyone’s eyes when that happens."
"What happened?"
"Life," was all Bear said in a quiet and grim voice. "Life happened."
Gray’s lips parted, but then he pressed them together tightly. He nodded in understanding, not raising any more questions. Bear, on the other hand, took a step away and then stopped.
"If Hera contact you, tell me," Bear remarked. "I need to know if she’s fine."
"Do you think she would? Considering she’s probably back in that place, all types of communication to reach her are close to none."
"Just hopeful." Bear cast him a sidelong glance. "Who knows?"
"The more she cares, the more self-control she has," Gray argued in a quiet voice. "She won’t reach out. She’d rather bite her tongue out or break her own arm just to stop herself from making what she calls a mistake."
"Like I said, I was just being hopeful." Bear started walking away as he added, "Don’t take away that hope from an old man like myself."
Gray clenched his teeth while watching Bear leave the front door. He huffed faintly once the door slammed closed, glancing at the second floor again.
"I guess Bear’s right," he muttered. "It’s not the house that feels empty. It’s our lives, huh?"
