Chapter 1073: Let me regret you
"Do you... even have any idea what it means or how it feels to not be needed or be of use to you? Do you?"
Hera slowly balled her hands into tight fists, eyes still on Dominic. Dominic, on the other hand, dragged his foot to lessen their distance. When she was within his reach, he stopped.
"If you don’t have any idea, then don’t say it," he continued quietly. "Because it’s even worse than getting shot."
"I’m so glad my father didn’t let me take you home that time," she recalled, assessing him thoroughly. "You’ll be worse than Dragon."
"I’ll be worst. If I have to."
"I know it hurts not to be needed by me. My people had slapped that argument to me every single day," she replied in a hiss. "Not being needed by me makes people miserable, so I got to need them. So instead of them, I am the miserable one."
"Did I ever make you miserable?"
"Being Hera makes me miserable. It makes me want to die!" Hera breathed out through her gritted teeth. Her pupils dilated as her neck turned taut, provoked by his stubbornness. "Do you want to hear more of my misery?"
If there was someone who should understand her, that should be Dominic. He should know the reasons she didn’t want to stay; he should know why she wanted to walk away as soon as she could. Yet, here he was, putting his heart out of here so she could crush it even more.
He knew hurting him would hurt her a thousand times. But here he was, asking her to hurt him more than she already did.
"You sly, selfish jerk," she hissed, laughing through her gritted teeth. "Don’t make me more miserable than I already am. So, stop. Your battle is over. Mine has yet to start."
"Damn it." Dominic ran his fingers through his hair, clasping it tightly.
"If you truly want to help me, then go home." Hera huffed faintly, sliding her eyes to her side. "Take care of Basti and Miri. Make sure they’ll be fine and that they grow up okay."
"They will never be okay."
"Dominic."
"Whether I want it or not, I’ll end up hurting them."
"Are you seriously out of your mind?!" Hera yelled, grabbing his collar in anger.
This time, however, Dominic also raised his voice. "I am out of my mind! That’s right! I’m going crazy because no matter how much I pray for Heaven to die, I can’t kill the person who gave birth to my children!"
"Yet, I can’t stand looking at her face or hearing her voice or even her breath because it just reminds me she’s not you," he continued until he was panting, his tone mellowing down. "Even if I force myself, I can’t. It’s impossible, and it’s killing me to know there’s no other way that wouldn’t hurt our children. And it scares me that our children will only grow up watching their father slowly fall apart."
"So, I’m asking you. What do you want me to do, Hera? You want me to stop? Then make me. Shoot me, send me to a coma, or just kill me. Because if you don’t, I’d rather be someone you cannot ignore anymore instead of losing my mind wondering whether or not you’re alive."
"Please..." Tears formed in the corner of his eyes, reaching for her face. "We’re already hurt enough, Hera. Let’s not hurt each other more. Please, just this once... say you wanted my help — say you need me."
Hera pressed her lips tightly, swallowing the lump in her throat. Her grip on her collar loosened, casting her eyes down.
"My mom and dad..." she whispered, clasping his chest slowly. "They chose each other. They chose to fight their dangerous battles together and even dared to have a child. I used to think just how carefree and wild they were; I used to admire their decision. Aspire to be them or better than them. But in the end, having me is their biggest regret."
Hera bit her lips, unable to stop her tears from falling. "They made decisions because they were confident and arrogant, only to realize people grow old. That people get sick and die."
"They died and left me wealth that no one can count," she continued quietly, forcing a smile through her tears. "But along with that inheritance, I also inherited their enemies and problems."
"How can I do that to Basti and Miri?" Hera almost choked as she gazed up at him. "How can I choose a brief happiness at the cost of my children’s freedom and peace? If this pain is what it takes to make sure they’re fine and out of this mess, then I’d take it because, at the end of the day, they deserve that much."
"We don’t want to make the same mistake my parents did and I don’t want to make them go through what I did," she added, cupping his face while he shook his head. "Let me go, my love."
Dominic shook his head, crying through his gritted teeth. He clasped her hand on his cheek, lowering his head until his forehead was resting on her.
"Please," he begged under his breath. "Don’t do this. Please, Hera."
"The only help I can ask of you is to take care of our children."
"No... please."
"Let me go. Let me regret you," she whimpered, eyes closed. She cupped his face, letting his forehead rest on her. "Please."
Dominic sobbed, pulling her into his embrace. He buried his face in her shoulder, clasping her back tightly. He didn’t want to let her go; he couldn’t. It would kill him. But if he didn’t, it would kill her. Because at the end of the day, no matter how he twisted the truth or rationalized it, she was right.
There was no life or a bright future for Sebastian and Miracle in the underground.
Hera and Dominic might be happy for a little while until they weren’t. They would just live in fear, dreading their children’s safety. It wasn’t like Dominic didn’t know that. He simply hoped there was another way they could work this out once they talked.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t.
The only way was to let each other go and quietly agonize they couldn’t be together.
