Chapter 1069: Black
CLACK!
Dane slowly arched a brow, pulling the trigger once more when the loud bang didn’t pierce his ears. He tried again, but another clack caressed his ears. He slowly lifted his wide eyes, lips falling open.
It was empty.
"I was hopeful," Dominic whispered, making Dane’s breath hitch. "Bad habit."
The very moment Dane’s eyes fell on Dominic, a painful strike erupted in his abdomen. Dominic suddenly clasped Dane’s shoulder, pulling him down, and lifting his knee to strike his abdomen. A grunt escaped Dane when another blow hit the back of his head.
"Ugh!" Dane’s body shook as he felt his brain shake in his skull. Hunching in, he held his stomach and head to maintain his ground. But alas, before he could even recover and act on instinct, Dominic lifted his foot and swung it across his jaw.
"Ack!"
This time, Dane was tossed to the side and slid into the mud. He felt his jaw move as if it was dislocated, leaving him distraught for a moment. He lay on his side, grunting and coughing from the pain and the difficulty of getting up. He propped his elbow against the soft mud, pushing himself up to fight.
He could still fight.
He had to.
Despite the blows he had received without any sort of defense, Dane knew how torturous it would be if he hadn’t got himself together. Dominic caught him off guard, manipulating him into thinking the weapon still had ammo.
"You... you’re de — deyd," Dane warned in a slur, his jaw falling without control. Blood and saliva dripped from his mouth, using his other hand to support himself to get up. However, he only lifted himself a little when he felt Dominic’s presence a step from him.
"I’m already dying," Dominic remarked as he took a gigantic step over him, pressing his foot on Dane’s shoulder to push him back to the ground. He then walked over to him, squatting down on top of him.
Dominic clasped Dane’s collar tightly, gazing down at him emotionlessly. "Trust," he breathed out, pulling his arm back while balling his hand into a tight fist. In one swift move, his fist landed straight in Dimitri’s face.
"Friendship," whispered Dominic once more, and again, another punch struck Dane. "Loyalty."
Dominic spewed one word after another and each time, he would launch a merciless jab. Each punch was more powerful than the last, unfazed by the speck of blood splashing on him and on his knuckles.
"I am unbinding myself from all of those," he paused, watching Dane limped back to the ground. "May the Dane Zhang I know rest in peace, Dimitri."
Despite his pitiful state, Dane was still conscious. His head felt light and blood blurred his vision. Dominic’s voice might’ve sounded distant, but he could still grasp what the man was saying.
Strange, Dane thought. That he was having such thoughts at the moment:
Dominic didn’t call him Dimitri throughout their conversation and altercation until now. And the moment Dominic called him Dimitri, his tone changed completely. It was more harsh, unforgiving, and intimidating.
"Pha —" Dane intuitively grasped Dominic’s wrist, almost hyperventilating at the blows he received. "Pa — lease. Si — sir."
Dominic’s jaw tightened, staring coldly at the mangled face under him. "I have more expectations from you, Dimitri," he expressed, his voice was enough to make the wind feel more chilling. "But I guess you’re not just low, but the lowest of the low."
Again, Dane groaned as another punch struck his eye. His grip on Dominic, however, remained still.
"Let’s not break up our friendship with a gun," Dominic hissed, his expression still stoic, his fist ready for another jab. "What you did is much more personal."
Hence, to settle it, putting a hole in each other’s head was not enough.
Dominic unleashed all his pent-up anger and frustration in every punch. He didn’t care where his fist would land, but he kept in mind where he shouldn’t punch. He wanted Dane to last long. He wanted Dane to feel every punch until he started dreading the next one.
"Ugh! Argh! Ah!"
For the next three minutes, the sound of a man’s grunts and flesh hitting another resonated across the field of tall grasses. The sound grew into a pattern, creating a haunting melody no one wanted to hear in the middle of the night.
"Hah..." Dominic released Dane, eyes on the latter’s bloody face. "You’re still conscious."
"Help..." Dane tried to turn to his side, despite the weight on top of him. "Somebody... somebody... help..."
Dominic watched Dane cry for help while the latter was spewing blood. He drew a deep breath and rose from Dane, convinced he had beaten Dane enough. He turned around and walked away, running his bloody fingers through his hair.
"How do I kill someone in the worst possible way?" he wondered, looking back at Dane, who was trying to crawl away. "Ah."
Watching Dane try to crawl away made Dominic realize one thing; his anger wasn’t quenched yet. Dominic walked back to Dane, sitting on top of him again, to punch him again.
"Get out of my head," Dominic warned and then threw another punch. He clasped Dane’s loose collar tightly, keeping him in place to make sure he wouldn’t miss. "It’s your fault."
His voice sounded darker as the life in his eyes slowly disappeared. "If you want to take advantage of me, then you should’ve made sure my wife wouldn’t find out," he continued, throwing punches continuously. "Acting lessons are only worth a penny — I would’ve given you a raise if you think you can’t afford it. There were many ways to learn, Dimitri."
"Why did you spoil your plans?" he added firmly. "Why did you prove her right? You shouldn’t have been so greedy. She wanted to trust you just as much as I blindly trust you, yet you spoiled it. If these plans of yours are that important, then you should’ve acted as if you’re aiming for an award."
"Now, I might lose her." When those words slipped past through Dominic’s gritted teeth, his eyes blazed up in anger.
Lose her.
His beloved wife... she... Hera...
"Die," he breathed out, all he could see was red. "Die, die, die! I’ll kill all of you until she no longer has an excuse to abandon
